For public, you must enter from the front door and check in at the receptionist. The gymnasium was used as a temporary shelter for the displaced families from the tornado-torn apartment and the 100-year flood in 2015. They sponsored health related events, school backpack giveaway events and many community relation events. That's why majority of my annual United Way pledge is allocated to Houston Chinese Community Center. Because of the community penetration, it has attracted many successful businesses around here. The center is constructing a 2-story building called "New Horizons", which will provide much needed space for more exciting programs. This is how they treat somebody trying to donate high quality furniture that they can easily resell for a PROFIT!! These people are NOT good Christians; they are SCUM. Second mile has an "Opportunity Shop" which resales those clothing donations, producing funds to help the surrounding communities, which are called "neighbors" who are in need. There is also a grocery department where those "neighbors" can shop to help out on their weekly grocery expenses. I have volunteered there on several occasions as time permitted, especially during the recent flooding in the Richmond/ Rosenberg areas that displaced 1,000 families. The need was great and Second Mile, along with other area churches and associations, stepped up to the task of helping out the flood victims in the interim period until they could be made whole again. Second Mile is always in need of volunteers. So if you have some time on your hands and have been looking to volunteer somewhere for a good cause, I cannot think of a better place to make the effort. Houston and the rest of the country could use more places like The Ronald McDonald House. I…read morerecently went on a tour of the facility as a potential volunteer and I was blown away by what they do. The Ronald McDonald House is an extremely low cost ($25/day) facility for families of pediatric patients undergoing treatment in the Texas Medical Center. The facility provides housing to patients who are undergoing treatment at several hospital including MD Anderson, Texas Children's, Memorial Hermann, etc... Priority housing is given to patients undergoing cancer treatment, but many different families stay here. This is so much more than a long term hotel. There are community rooms, computer access, playrooms, outdoor playgrounds, community kitchens, laundry facilities, and more! They even have special kitchens for transplant patients to store their food. Most days of the week, volunteers bring and serve food to families staying here. Best part of the whole place? The house dog, Mogie. Mogie was running around, playing with kids, and was putting a smile on everyone's face. Pet therapy is so important for patients and their families. Mogie was so cute, I wanted to scoop him up and bring him home with me! For $175 a week, a family can stay here, get free shuttle service to/from hospitals, and enjoy many free catered meals. I can't imagine how important a facility like this is when you are from out of town and your family is devastated by a life threatening medical diagnosis. I can't wait to start volunteering here!
