(It boggles the mind that the building had to jump through hoops to upgrade their windows because it was in a historic district -- you'd think the Neighborhood Association would appreciate anything it could do to improve its appearance -- but I digress!) So it's ugly on the outside, but inside the individual units are well-designed -- lots of light and closet space. It was also built before the (1972?) change in the building code, so not only do the solid concrete floors & walls make the apartments sound-proof, they are practically fire-proof as well. (I should know -- there was a fire in the unit next to mine and the fire inspector told me that unless the fire spread to the hallway, there was little chance of a fire spreading from one unit to another.) The staff at the 24-hour front desk is friendly and the new building manager is great. He's very solution-oriented. He also used to work in university campus housing so he's more than capable of handling middle-of-the-night emergencies, tiffs between neighbors, as well as the random incidents with drunks and cranks. And the best thing (depending on how you look at it) is it's VERY pet-friendly. You could keep a pack of St. Bernard's in your apartment if you were so inclined.

For the first six months or so, there were definitely a lot of problems--the AC, like another reviewer mentioned, malfunctioned repeatedly for the entire summer and one or the other elevator was out about half the time. Then, in the beginning of the year, the building transitioned management companies from GHA (NEVER move into a building managed by this company) to a well-established firm. Since then, maintenance issues have been resolved more quickly and building-wide problems, like the old risers, are being addressed. The property manager is very responsive to residents. Overall, it's a great place to live. Close to 14th St., restaurants, and grocery stores, but still quiet. Street parking is relatively easy if you don't luck into a spot in the garage or the lot. There's a highly-rated vet less than half a mile away. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to either the green or orange-blue-silver metro lines, as well. The residents are friendly, and the rooftop pool is beautiful! I expect the maintenance issues to only improve over the next year or so.

This building is SUPER convenient to live in. The staff was always super sweet (aside from one…read morefront desk person), and they provide you with room and board so it's a bit cheaper than your normal DC prices. Aside from this, the building is dirty. There were multiple instances where we were notified by people using the shower as a bathroom and leaving trash bags full of bowel movements in the hall ways. When I moved in my room was DIRTY, like dirt in every corner. The walls were dirty, and there was just a general dirty feel. Every once in a while there was a FOUL smell that came from the hallway (or maybe the air vents) that I could not stand. On the hottest days it had me opening my window just so I could breathe fresh air. Sometimes the bathroom would smell like sewage, and not in a normal bathroom way, like something was coming from the drains. At first the dinner food was horrific, but it got better I think because they hired a new nighttime cook so I can't complain. They only have community fridges and don't allow mini fridges which was kind of limiting. On the days they don't provide dinner it was inconvenient to have to door dash or walk to Union Station to get food. The rest of the time the food was okay and they had options, if you're vegetarian tho the options are limited. Every night, without fail, there is a homeless man who screams curse words. If you're not familiar with city life this can be pretty scary at first but he's harmless. The location is phenomenal and I definitely really enjoyed that part. You're like 5 mins from the capitol, 10 from Union station, and within 5-10 of any Congress office buildings. This was a convenient stay, but definitely know what you're getting into before you go. Also if you have a male partner, get used to not being able to have them over because there is no way.

Meh experience. My main issue is that the rooms and the building were falling apart. My room was…read moregross, especially the mattress was disgusting and dirty. The ceiling was also quite literally falling- one day after it rained I walked out of my room and a huge chunk of the ceiling was on the floor in the hallway lmao. There was also a gas leak when I was there that was not handled well by management imo, there was no communication about what was happening. Sometimes at night there would be no one at the front desk (though there was supposed to be), so I would ring the buzzer and no one would answer so I was stuck outside in the middle of the night until someone came by. Though I was not concerned about security, I felt unsafe due to the dirtiness of the place, it felt like it was about to collapse. The fridge situation was also horrible- not enough fridge space so there was no room to put anything, and it was also super dirty. People were also always stealing food and clothes from the laundry room. Another thing- though the flat rate is great, all the other fees are so bad, like the guest fee. Also, I was not notified about what time move out was, I ended up being an hour late to move out, and they charged me (if I remember correctly) 80$. Just crazy given what I've outlined above lmao. Now the positives- the location is unbeatable, especially for the price. A lot of the management were really really nice and welcoming, which I appreciate. It was also so convenient having the dining hall, and the food was totally ok. It was nice that the dorm also held activities and fun nights to meet people. I definitely do not regret staying at TMH for the price and location, I just wish I knew what I was getting myself into beforehand and that management addresses these issues.

Instead of the roof being on the actual roof it's on the second floor landing. They make up for it in other ways. The square footage of the apartments is much larger than the properties in the Navy Yard Community. The gym is great I just wish they would invest in a stair climbing machine and bar bells. The halls are always clean and well maintained. The main Concierge Koren is awesome and welcoming. She addresses rasca resident by their name. That's a great skill to have when you're the face of the building. If you want a more mature vibe this is the building. I am hoping they would provide more weekly activities to the residents such as breakfast on the go, movie night, mixers etc. Add more life to the building. Be careful, during the summer the Tiger mosquitos are no joke. They should invest in plants to keep the mosquitos away ( I.e., Lavender plant, Marigolds, Citronella Grass, Scented Geraniums). Hopefully they do something about it before the summer. Other than that I am satisfied.

I've only had a few maintenance requests put in and they were quickly taken care off. The interior is not as modern as other buildings in the Navy Yard but the units are much larger and more affordably priced. I think the only major drawback was there were no grills or pools on the roof (they are located on the 2nd floor) but that didn't really matter to me. Note that just like the rest of the Navy yard there are a ton of new buildings being constructed and the stadium traffic is horrible. I had no problems with the street noise and all the buildings currently being built (mid-2020) were far enough away that I couldn't hear the construction noise. In terms of traffic from the stadium, 909 is in one of the better locations in the Navy Yard. It's pretty much a straight shot to I-395 with only a few intersections on the way.
