The Art Project is easily one of the semi-best kept secrets in Memphis for kids. The concept is perfect: pay for space and freedom to roam and create as you please! The prices are reasonable ($18 for a 1.5-hour session or $200 for a year membership and unlimited bookings of 1.5-hour sessions), the staff is excellent, and the projects available are varied and unique. Went here with my toddler on a Friday afternoon, and it was so much fun. The woman working there was incredibly kind and helpful, and there's a lot of freedom for kids to just create and explore through art of all kinds. It's really cool how they have it set up with easels and paint, stencils and stickers, beads and other various crafts. We will definitely be back. read more

Great small business in Overton Park. We came in from Denver to visit my fiancé's 2.5 year old daughter. I found this place on a "Things to Do" on a local Memphis' Mom blog. This is such a cute shop. We bought an hour worth of free play and painted, did stamps, colored, and played with squigz on the windows. There are several tables set up in the front with craft ideas and all the pieces to make the craft. Cute little gift shop area with well curated items. You can purchase snacks and drinks and I think even beer. We will take her back here again next time we are in town. read more

First time here and we're in our glory (moms and kids)! Every craft/art medium I can imagine for the kids to be creative...then beer available for the moms....genius! This will definitely be on my visit list every time I come back to Memphis. The other great thing is that it's a controlled smaller studio so I'm not having to chase kids the entire time! read more

A little pricey but super fun for the kids. My daughter loves painting and drawing, so she immediately found things to occupy herself. My son, on the other hand, hates that stuff, and he was still able to entertain himself playing with blocks and magnatiles and kinetic sand. Everyone had fun. read more

I'm watching my 5 year old sons take a woodworking workshop to make catapults. They are having a blast. This is a unique concept. There are tons of supplies for kids to use their imagination & create art. There are also classes. You come with your kids & they can make art while you enjoy a coffee or beer and do work, surf the net, or whatever else you want to do. First off, the online pictures make this place seem way larger and more appealing than it is. The building is a small "studio" with not much to do other than paint on an easel. Well, you can build blocks (whoop-de-doo) or play with a tiny try of kinetic sand (yippee)--basically, nothing impressive or that I don't already have in my house. This place also comes with disrespectful staff (all young college kids/recent graduates) that stare at you for the entire visit and try to control how your children choose to finger paint. To be more specific, two staff members interrupted the way my children were finger painting and insisted they do so their way (so as to not leave as much of a mess for them to clean up). I found that to be very impolite, considering the way The Art Project advertises customers to "Make Art" and "Leave The Mess". When the staff members aren't intruding in your experience though, they stand behind the counter eating snacks and/or text messaging on their cell phones. Also, the racks to hang your child(ren)'s paintings are unorganized and the staff don't care when other children or their parents hang paintings in front of your child/ren's--ruining them. Lastly--when we were leaving--a staff member offered to put my children's paintings in a trash bag, but then complained about giving out more than one. She said, "You can roll up the paintings or put them in trash bags, but I'm not sure I can give out a bunch of them". Funny--because I only received ONE. So, not only was this girl not fully trained in how to do her job/The Art Project's policies, but she refused to give me a second trash bag after offering them up. How unprofessional. read more

Centered in the middle of OvertonSquare, not only do you have great food, entertainment, a candy shop, movie theaters, ballet, and a cultural heart of Memphis, you have wonderful people to go with it. On Tuesdays, there is particularly talented, engaging, and cheerful lady that works there until closing time. Beautiful heart, loves art, children, and conversation. This is an awesome place for kids and parents to get creative with NO stress about the mess! The space, which is big enough for parties and classes, manages to be both modern and super kid-friendly. They've thought of everything--there are snacks and drinks (even beer for grown-ups), affordable and awesome birthday presents in their retail area, and if you love what your kiddo created, let the art project staffers scan it and make you some notecards or a large print for Grandma's fridge. We love the Art Project. My 7 year old could go every day and find something new to do! I had not planned to buy the membership but it quickly became clear that she loved it. I love that with the membership we can drop in for an hour or so as we are waiting on dad to get off work in the evening. I also love chatting with other adults as our kids play.
