In what can only be described as a…read morecraft themed haberdashery locate din a warehouse, you'll come across this place by accident at the back of the shops, pretty badly sign-posted and decorated like your grans place would be if she tried to make an effort to 'modernise'. That being said, the cakes were plentiful and looked great, the service was swift and with a smile, and although the food on offer at lunch was pretty basic and what you would expect from a standard pub, it was damn tasty and cooked to perfection. Plenty of high chairs available for the many little people that brought their parents along and I have to say that the atmosphere was quite homely, very much what we needed at the time and lovely pick-me-up after getting soaked in the rain. This place is unlikely to blow you away, you will probably have to share it with grandmothers and babies, but you will eat well, you will be comfortable, and you will not be over-charged. Oh, lunch orders stop at 2.30pm, make sure you don't miss out, they are pretty prompt when stopping service.

The Windwhistle is a large Inn, with a variety of different types of seating, form the spacious sun-soaked tables of the Orangery, that leads to outside tables that maximise the magnificent view, to the more classical pub tables in the bar. It even has its own forty seater restaurant and function room, this is a big place. Wanting a decent meal, after a dining disaster the previous evening, we would not be disappointed. Friendly and helpful staff, that seemed genuinely interested in what we had to say, was a promising start, as was the wide ranging menu and well stocked bar. The menu had a good range of dishes, from standard dishes like scampi and curry, to the daily specials, above the fireplace. My wife and I plumped for the special of prawn and monkfish Thai Curry. When the curry arrived I was staggered by the portion size, over ten sizeable chunks of monkfish, huge tiger prawns, sticky rice, a spicy Thai curry sauce and a huge bowl of noodles. It tasted as good as it looked, full of flavour, a hearty filling meal, just what we wanted. It was fairly pricey at around £14, but worth every penny. The strawberry pavlova dessert to follow was equally generous and very tasty. Rounding of the meal a good strong cup of coffee, I was tempted to give the Windwhistle five stars for the overall blend of great service, wonderful food and a brilliant setting, but that would require further visits; just wished we didn't live so far away!

The restaurant itself probably only seats about twenty, but Cinnamons has takeaway and delivery service, which was extremely popular. This meant a steady stream of people coming in during the course of the evening to collect their takeaways; due to the size of the restaurant, this could put off some diners. A well stocked bar and helpful, but not intrusive staff, was another plus point. After studying the wide ranging menu, we plumped for a set meal for two (£27.95) and an additional rice and chicken sagwala, as there were three of us. After the obligatory poppadoms, mango chutney, lime pickle etc., there were two starters of chicken tikka and lamb tikka, both of which were beautifully tender. In addition to the sagwala, the set menu mains were a chicken korma and a lamb bhuna, pretty standard stuff, but tasty. The accompaniments of a plain naan, pilau rice and huge portion of mushroom pilau, made for a great meal. As usual at the end of the meal, we were all extremely full and passed on the desserts. Open for coffee and pastries during lunchtime, the downstairs features a variety of comfortable seating, perfect for wiling away a few hours during the day. Having only been only opened a week when we booked a table, the menu was still pretty embryonic. A great interior though, very bright and summery, with a good splash of colour on the paintings that dotted the walls. There is even a terraced roof adjacent the kitchen, a nice touch. The tables varied in size from the cosy for couples to tables of four for bigger parties. The restaurant rapidly filled, so it is probably best to book or relax in the area of comfortable seating while you wait. An impressive bar area in the centre, seemed to cater for all tastes; the wine list was also fairly comprehensive. The menu itself had a few set starters including dough balls and the daily special of goat's cheese salad. As hindsight would prove skipping the starters was a wise choice, as the size of the mains and desserts were very generous; to eat three courses at Whittys you would have to be very hungry! For my main I plumped for the Melt Down pizza - Cajun chicken, chorizo and jalapeño peppers (with seeds!) - very spicy, but also extremely tasty. My wife and brother in law had the daily special pasta dish of penne pasta with mushrooms, courgettes and mozzarella, with a large side salad and garlic bread. This was also a substantial and impressive meal, but strangely there were no more pasta dishes on the menu, personally I think they should expand this side of the menu, it would be a roaring success. There were other pizzas, some standard like the Hawaiian, with other interesting additions like the Weaver, the Rampson and one for the indecisive, the Four Corners. As we had skipped the starter, you've got to have a dessert, the choice again a little limited, but I'm sure the range will grow. There was a choice of ice cream, crème brulee and plum sauce, and Eton Mess. Nothing much beats the mix of meringue, strawberries and cream, a great finish to an excellent meal. Reasonably priced too, about £10 for a main and £5 for a dessert is not going to break the bank. Helpful staff too, with a smile on their faces, which makes a big difference. Pity we live 180 miles away or we would certainly be regulars!

My partner wolfed down a cake from the tempting display in the cabinet. Having enjoyed our initial quick coffee visit we returned on Market Day, Thursday, and had a proper lunch. We had a 12 inch stone baked pizza and the cajun salad washed down with Peroni beer. It was all freshly cooked and tasty in a very relaxing spacious and clean setting. We found the price acceptable and we hope to visit again very soon. The waitress had a cheerful smile and ensured we were topped up with drinks and well looked after during our visit. There is a great variety of places to eat in Axminster and this is a very welcome addition - not only in the interesting menu but in giving jobs to so many young people as well.
