I've read the other reviews on here, and am taken aback that this place has scored so poorly. I have had the pleasure of eating here many times since 2014, and this is the pub that I drove to from my old home town of Southend-on-Sea to have a first date with the woman who is now my fiancée (and the mother of our beautiful daughter), so this place holds some fond memories.
To be fair, the Albert is just a beefeater restaurant attached to a Premier Inn on the outskirts of Colchester Town Centre. It is never going to be fine dining, and you are never guaranteed to be waiting hours for your food. However, if you are a fan of steaks or burgers, then this is a great place to eat. The double steak burger (which unfortunately was no longer on the menu upon my last visit) was divine and very filling, let alone the unlimited chips you can get. I have ventured into other dishes there (the paprika chicken is amazing, moist chicken breast with the right amount of heat) and have never been disappointed.
When it comes to the staff, again I have no complaints. I am a somewhat fussy eater (due to allergies and an aversion to dairy foods) and they ensure that my food comes out exactly as I have ordered. I have been there on my birthday and in turn usually get a free dish off the bill, as well as a bottle of house wine, which is a very nice touch.
It is never going to be fine dining, or one of those great BBQ joints that pop up every now and then (it wont even be a top burger joint), but there are no complaints with the Albert. I am already looking forward to going back tomorrow night to celebrate my fiancées birthday with the family! read more
