Hands up who likes Belgian beer? Then please let me direct you to Brouge. First of all, its a…read moresurprising treat to get here. As you walk up Richmond High Street, past all the chain bars and restaurants, a little sign catches you eye - but it is at foot level. Brouge is located in the basement of a building, so you have to walk down stone steps, and push open a heavy wooden door to get in. The inside is pleasingly designed with cosy, sleek leather booths. I was with friends who wanted to make their way through the Belgian beer list, and it is comprehensive beyond your wildest dreams. I lost count of the varied amount of beer that were on tap, but I saw blonde bier (using the Belgian spelling), brown bier, fruit bier, Trappist bier, as well as ales. Pages and pages of all types of beer. They all went down a treat - apart from for me, who doesn't like beer! Sorry everyone. Still, there was plenty to eat and drink, and non beer drinkers needn't feel left out. The lunch and dinner menu is also Belgian themed, one speciality is mussels, done 4 different ways. I also spied larger plates, like Belgian sausage and mash. I was pleased to see that there was plenty of wine on offer, and they thoughtfully suggested matches of meals to the drinks. The wine list does jump up in price though, most of the bottles were £25.00 or up. There were a handful of house wines which were under £15.00, thankfully. Perhaps next time I come here I will try out a couple of beers? I guess this is the place to do so.

As we had heard people raving about the food of this pub ( and given the many good food awards…read moreadvertised) we went to try it on this hot summer day. The pub is near a supermarket ( Sainsbury's) and there is a mini park where kids were having a joyful day with the water being sprinkled in the park. Little did we know that halfway through our order one soaked kid would interrupt one of the only 2 staff working there to ask for an old pound coin and another young one coming into the restaurant in just her dirty nappy (nothing else on and water dripping from everywhere) and later playing peek-a-boo with the bartender.. Not a great sight when dining! We waited a little while for the food, could see that the kitchen had prepared it but there was no one to serve it ( we were the only ones eating) so had to help ourselves. Noisy and drunk young men shouting at the bar staff to hand them some napkins for an allegedly disabled person outside tipped it off! The food is OK but nothing extraordinary and compared with the HORRIBLE atmosphere, we will never set foot again. Totally OVERRATED.

We find that eateries near major attractions tend to up their prices to catch the tourists. The guard immediately told us of The Hampton. His advice proved well founded. Our meal was first class and the warm welcome and ambiance was well worth the short drive from the palace. My partners steak was generous and delicious. I went for their burger which was huge and very tasty. We were too full to try their deserts, but there was a large selection available. Can be recommended with confidence.

It was a shame since we're traveling from LA and really wanted my husband to have a drink there as I've been there a few years back. We're a mixed race couple so we assumed that was the reason!! Which was rinsed off quickly as soon as we arrived back to our hotel with a great welcome of hospitality and great pleasure!!!

So I'm glad to be able to report unbiasedly that The Bear is a solid English pub serving good food and ale. You can tell from the large dining area that the kitchen does produce some good food which is major draw to this pub. There's an international flavour to the food with the influences ranging from Scandinavian gravadlax to oriental hoisin duck rolls to Mediterranean salads. However, I tend to enjoy the English traditionals most here like Gloucester Old Spot pork belly or suet crust chicken, ham & leek pie finished off with a sticky toffee pudding for dessert. They also have BBQs on their deck in the summer and you can even pre-order your lunch to save time. All in all, the Bear is furry good!

Its pub garden looks onto the weir (hence the name) of Walton On Thames. The garden itself is made up of about 30 wooden tables, so come the summer months, you can get your food, or your pint - I will take a large glass of Sauvignon - and sit and gaze out at the river; the boats going past, people ambling past with their families or their dogs, or even their fishing poles - it is a glorious place to be on a hot day. However, when it is not a hot summers day, this pub reverts to being quite a bog standard affair. It is perfectly decent, nothing wrong with it, but the food is typical pub fare, nothing to write home about (it is just that everything tastes better when eaten outdoors, in the sun, don't you think?) Also, this pub has the problem that it is near precisely nothing. It is down a long road which has nothing else on it, so you have to drive here. That means no more than two drinks and then it is back to the apple juice. If you were to come here for lunch on a warm day, you can walk or cycle or even sail up by coming along the towpath, but that does not sound very enticing on a winters day really. I would save a visit here until it is nice weather, and then bag an outdoor table as fast as you can!

The meal was a lovely hearty meal, the Lamb was tender with the veg being well cooked, that you could taste the nutrients in it. The staff were lovely, and attentive. Being that the pub is near the Thames, with its lovely surroundings its great to take pictures around the area. The Weir is family friendly and has real nice atmosphere to the place. I don't know when I'll be down these sides again, but I would surely make a stop off.
