I have been charged heavily for using the 10 freeway express lane, which is sometimes reserved exclusively for 2+ passengers. I suggest that the sign should flicker red to clearly indicate that non-2+1 riders should not use it, because everyone travels at more than 60 miles per hour, and it's hard to notice the 2+1-only sign. read more

The 10 freeway usually has a lot of traffic, especially the closer you get to Los Angels, West Covina, etc. The 10 intersects with the 91, 71, 57, and the 605 freeways. It seems like it's always under construction, but you never really see anyone working on it. They'll close a lane for a year or more to do a little decorative wall or to add one more lane. But it's lasted for years and years now, and not much has been finished. Your real alternative would be the 60, but that one can get congested, too. read more

Which run from Santa Monica all way to the border of Arizona in the San Bernardino county. I-10 which with the most traffic is from I-405 to I-5 intersection. Irony is I-10, I-405 and I-5 Los Angeles are top five most traffic jam freeway, yes all in one city ! The biggest issue with I-10 there are no good alternate transportation nears that freeway. The silver line does run near the I-10 from union station to San Bernardino county, but has too few stops and is idea for most working people. Some people counter by not using the freeway to get to work in downtown, simply just use the rapid bus from the El Monte station that would save them good amount of time stuck in the traffic in I-10 and also parking is free in the station. Which would cost you arm and leg in downtown. Some area of I-10 is convert the carpool lane to express lane, basically a toll lane. Using tax player money too. The good about the freeway is that is mostly in good condition despite is over couple decades old. Is quite easy to pull over in most of the section which cannot do that in I-110 or other older freeway. Freeway review? Well first off quality of the road is not so good. Super bumpy full of offset freeway over pass bumpy transitions. You can get up to speed on this highway but due to the traffic congestion on a daily basis the only time you can really go on cruising at a constant speed is after 10pm to the early morning hours. Weekend driving? Forget about it its a parking lot especially on a nice beach day or holiday weekend. The 10 is a necessity in southern Cali, it takes you from the coast to Arizona and beyond...so plan ahead and drive safe. read more

Adapting to the 10: I try to take the 105 instead but sometimes you just can't avoid this. It feels like a parking lot sometimes. I've learned to prepare for this by driving outside of rush hour and having a good playlist or food to eat while in traffic. If people weren't staring back, I'd start taking photographs. I grew up in West LA and where it was hopin' on the 10 WEST to head towards my old high school in Santa Monica (Go Vikings) or headed to San Gabriel Valley after Chinese school on Saturdays to accompany my family against my will to 99 ranch Market..... I have some fantastic memories of this freeway and it is my life line to get anywhere in LA for me. Routes 10 West: Want to head to the Santa Monica Promenade? The beach? PCH? Bay Cities? Well, then the 10 W is for you. 10 east: If I'm ever in the mood to eat all you can eat Korean BBQ or when I want to cruise to the 626 find me on the 10 East. Traffic: It gets pretty bad durin' rush hour traffic...... However, the light at the end of the tunnel is that I'm always going in the opposite direction when it's heavy :) **Dependin' on your commute it can get pretty hairy. But it is what it is. The 10 freeway in the downtown area can be a gridlock hell sometimes. Unfortunately it's one of those necessities for driving if you're doing anything down town and coming from the west side/Beach Cities of Los Angeles. The 10 freeway also connects of all major freeways in LA that includes the 405, 110, 17, 605, 5, and 101. It is the ONLY interstate/freeway/interstate/Highway in LA that does that. There also isn't any carpool lane for the 10 freeway until you get to the East LA area (basically east of the 710 freeway). I found the 10 freeway will be one of the most useful freeways in LA because of its versatility of areas that it covers. I made a complaint with Express Lanes and the CHP, I'm sick and tired of motorist abusing the carpool lanes and the express lanes, I commute from West Covina to Boyle Heights every day with my 3 kids, so we are carpooling, every day I see single passengers entering the carpool lanes on the 10 from Puente to the 605, there is no way that so many people are paying $15 to get into the express lanes so you know that they are not entering the right number of passengers and they are abusing the express lanes. CHP needs to enforce the law, the express lanes are crap and they are not doing what they are supposed to. Our commute over the last 2 years since they opened the lanes has increased about half an hour! It was way better when it was just a carpool lane. If you carpool on this lane I recommend that you make a complaint, here is what I sent the CHP. I have made a complaint with metro express lanes about the abuse on the 10fwy of people who are not carpooling or are not using the right number of passengers on their transponder, this was their response. In order for the Metro ExpressLanes to operate efficiently, a combination of visual monitoring by California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicles, photo enforcement and FasTrak® will be used to ensure legal use of the ExpressLanes. When traveling on the Metro ExpressLanes, a beacon light will indicate the transponder occupancy setting. The beacon light is visible to the CHP who will perform a visual verification of the vehicle occupancy and cite non-compliant drivers. If a driver uses the Metro ExpressLanes without a valid transponder, a photo of the vehicle license plate will be taken and the registered owner of the vehicle will be issued a toll evasion violation notice. The problem is that the CHP is not enforcing it and it's causing a lot of abuse, I carpool every day on the 10fwy with my 3 children and every day I see abuse on the carpool lane, on the 10fwy west going towards the 605fwy, and on the express lanes single user vehicles are not entering the right number of passengers on their transponder because they know it's not being enforced by the CHP, it is causing a huge congestion on the express lanes. The CHP needs to start giving citations to these drivers who are abusing the lanes. read more

Possibly one of the worst freeways. Basically a parking lot. You move faster through one of those automated car washes. Hopefully you have an all terrain type of vehicle, if not, prepare to get wrecked by pot holes and debris of all sorts. Who knows you might get lucky and get stuck behind a truck carrying rocks of all shapes and sizes and just hear the clacking of them bouncing off your windshield and or hood, dont bother trying to change lanes because the other one if probably under construction.. if you happened to avoid all this prepare to stop for a car accident further up the way. read more

You would think that with the Fast Pass lane that was just constructed, it would have eased up traffic a bit. No way! After passing San Bernardino, depending on the time, I would bump my review up 1 more star! The most congested freeway as well as the most under constructed one, the 10 freeway is a nightmare for Los Angelenos to take on their daily commute. It seems as if no matter what time of the day it is, there is always traffic on this freeway. I have even seen the Fast Pass Lane congested too. That is how bad this freeway is! The stops that are easiest access for this freeway include Alhambra, Monterey Park, El Monte, Baldwin Park, Covina, CSULA and others. So who likes free parking lots? Ohhhhh I know this one, it's easy, everyone who is stuck on the 10 between the 5 and PCH. This particular parking lot is absolutely a beast at certain times of day. The 10 is the main thoroughfare between DTLA and the Westside. Definitely one of the most travelled stretches of freeway anywhere in the world. I can also say without a shadow of a doubt that it is not in the best of conditions but is for the most part passable. Pro Tip: Avoid it during rush hour in both directions =X At least this stretch of road is more pleasant to drive visually... They have lots of palm trees off to the side of the freeway. Let alone it winds around a few hills covered in trees and houses. Also the view of DTLA is very appealing to me. I also like that this is one of the few transcontinental interstates from east to west and back again... =) Enjoy the free parking... do not pass go... and don't expect to find any cash when you land on free parking here... read more

I've driven from Santa Monica to the Palm Springs area on the 10 freeway, still a long way to go to FL, but I've covered all of LA. There seems to always have lots of traffic on the 10. Even when you would it expect it to be empty, like 4 am. Most of the road is concrete walls, some cities have some decor, but still very plain. Don't forget about the years-long construction for expanding the lanes. It it NO FUN!! They decide to close exits (different one each day) with no warning or signs, so you get to exit on the next one which may be a couple of miles out of the way. However, it is better now than it used to be, but still under construction. I do have to give it one thing though, driving east on early winter mornings have one of the best views of either the snow-capped mountains or the sun coming up making the sky gorgeous! It makes my drive on the 110 so much better. :) read more

The freeway devil will play his evil tricks. He will back traffic up so much that you think there is an accident - only you will never see it. You will leave Pasadena at 7:45 am and get to Santa Monica at 10:45 AM. He will try to lure you off the freeway with promises of fried chicken, beer, carne asada, bacon-wrapped hot-dogs (the official hot dog of Los Angeles), women, gambling and, lets just face, all that other fun stuff.... ...but you are committed! You've prepared yourself to fight back. Rather than have to face the freeway devil with terrible morning radio of blah, blah, blah and afternoon songs that repeat every third track, you've got your iphone music ready. Guys, let's get real. It's a Los Angeles freeway! It's congested with cars and folks that either can't drive or have bad attitudes I've traveled this freeway for almost my entire life. I even remember when the Northridge quake in '94 took down the over pass near La Cienega. This freeway has needed a carpool lane added from Downtown LA to the PCH for years. The only cool thing about this freeway is that it's a straight shot to the beach if you head out west. I'm only giving it 2 stars because it's a pretty direct way to get across LA...in theory. Ah, the fond memories of fighting rush hour morning traffic from Monterey Park to Beverly Hills for work. The hypnotic rhythm of the crawl 5 feet-stop-crawl 5 feet-stop almost lulling me back to sleep. I could literally barely keep my eyes open it was so tedious. People so insanely desperate to get an inch up on their fellow drivers that they take the off ramp at places like Crenshaw, just to drive straight across and back down the onramp so they'll be 1 or 2 cars ahead when they re-merge. Fantastic. Yes, it definitely seems like some of the stupidest and most self-absorbed drivers take this freeway. But it's probably just because of the sheer numbers. From my experience, rush hour going back East starts at 2pm on a weekday. I found it faster anytime after that to just take Venice back to downtown. Seriously, you'll move much faster. It's a real soul crusher to wait 5 minutes just to make your way up to the light at the end of the on-ramp! Wilshire, don't even think about it. Olympic, not a whole lot better. Pico, too small. Only 2 lanes, one of which will inevitably be blocked by a double parked delivery truck somewhere. Venice is the key my friends. Nice and wide, and zippy. Why is it that someone's car always breaks down in the left lanes? At least going West. Rubberneckers always compound the situation. Although, this is the best freeway for people watching and checking out other drivers since you're not going anywhere anytime soon anyway. East of downtown, well that part's not real fun either. Going through the MP/Alhambra/San Gabriel area, it's always crowded. At least going East. It's a little disturbing how many people can't seem to understand the basic concept of merging on those joined side-roads that lead onto the freeway. If you're getting onto the freeway, you YIELD to oncoming cars. And then match the speed of traffic, not creep out at 15 mph staring at me to give you permission to rev it up Flintstone-stilo. YABBA DABBA DOO. If you have to get from one side of LA to the other, unfortunately the 10 is just a necessary evil it seems. It also wins the award for Most Noticeable CalTrans Projects Going On At Night and Narrowing Lanes Yet Nothing Discernable is Taking Place Except Maybe a Game of Yahtzee. *sigh* read more

I used to think the 405 was worst, but I have come to the conclusion that this is the worst freeway in LA and any surrounding area. Constant traffic (worst from 3-7:30 at night) and 6:30 -9 in the morning. This freeway even gets traffic on the weekend. It has a carpool lane but it ends and stars in downtown. Wtf!! Also at night there's constant construction so alot of exits are closed. This freeway also has nothing nice to look at. Their used to be nice murals, but they are covered with graffiti and gang names.Because of Gangland I now know what PF13 means. What would make this freeway more magical. 1. The only reason this is a two is because it's a freeway and it takes me places no road can take me in a reasonable amount of time. But it's also a two because even if I can go faster there's usually always traffic to negate any speed boosts.
