Thai Street is operated by the same people who own Mai Thai on Victoria Street West, Grasshopper on Albert Street and the Red Crab restaurants. I have eaten at Grasshopper before and the food was good, so have been keen to try out Thai Street for ages. Three of us went there for dinner two weeks ago. We had had a full on day out at NZ Fashion Week and were holding out for some yummy comfort food. Thai Street was an obvious choice as it is very close to the Viaduct Events Centre.
On arrival, you first notice how open the restaurant is and that it is right on the street. It is surrounded by large glass windows, so it makes it interesting to look inside at the diners and the kitchen when you walk past. If you are dining, it is a great place to 'people watch' if you are into that sort of thing - I am!
We got there around 8pm and were extremely lucky to get a table! Had we been any earlier or later, we would have missed out. They were completely full. We would have had to of sat outside! Because it was a very cold night, we would have gone to another restaurant.
We first ordered drinks. My two dining companions ordered white wine, both of which they really enjoyed. I, however, rarely drink wine, but was intrigued by their cocktail list. All the cocktails are priced at $13.50, which is very reasonable compared to other bars/restaurants in the Auckland CBD area! I ordered the 'Weekend Pick Up' which consisted of rum blended with fresh mint and lime, mango and passionfruit. When it arrived at the table, both the others were desperate to try it! It was a bright green colour and tasted absolutely delicious! I would come back to Thai Street just for this drink!
We then ordered our meals. I wanted to order an entree as well, so chose the 'Fresh Spring Roll of cucumber, carrots, roasted duck and caramelised tamarind relish' ($3 for one) and a 'Golden Money Bag with lightly fried mince, prawns and mixed vegetables wrapped in pastry' ($2 for one). When they arrived, there was no fresh roll, instead a deep fried one. When I tried to get the attention of a waiter to tell them they mixed up the order, I was unsuccessful. Instead, I had to go up to the bar to tell them. One female waitress was the extremely apologetic and rushed to the kitchen as soon as possible to fix my order. A fresh spring roll was out in no time! The roll however did not excite me, partly because I thought it would be something like a Vietnamese summer roll, but I was wrong. Would not recommend ordering this. The money bag was average - I have had better at a Chinese restaurant at Food Alley in Albert Street.
For mains, one friend ordered the 'Tom Po Tak' which is a seafood soup with prawns, mussels, fish, squid, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves ($17.50 for medium size, $21.50 for large size). It had a really nice flavour to it and the seafood was cooked perfectly. My other friend and I ordered the 'Pad Thai Goong Sod' which was Thai fried noodles with chicken, prawns and peanuts ($14.50). It was delicious! And a great portion! I would definitely recommend this Pad Thai.
Overall, I would recommend Thai Street if you are after some reasonably priced and filling food. It was a great night because it was just what we were looking for - yummy and comforting food! read more
