We recently relocated to Seattle or we'd still have our son (4 years old) there and soon enough our daughter (2 years old). The facilities were more than adequate and convenient for us. I was particularly impressed with the Montessori Method with specific materials used throughout the classroom. The simplicity and layout of the classroom allowed my son to really expand his capacity to concentrate and focus on a task. By the end of the school year he was up to a span of 45+ minutes on a specific activity, on his own accord. For a 4 year old I think that is quite impressive. My son really enjoyed his time at school and still misses the good friends he made. We were thrilled with the dual language aspect as well. With our world becoming smaller and smaller its important to us to introduce other languages and respective cultures to our children. Our primary language at home is English and I wasn't expecting my son to speak Chinese as much as recognize the sounds. I was quite surprised when he was excited to share with me that he could count to 10 in Chinese one day. I was impressed to find out as well how Chinese is one of the few languages that require use of both the right and left brain. I especially appreciated John and Lilly's (the owners') attention to our son's needs and our needs as parents. The communication between us and John and Lilly was consistent and thorough. We were kept informed of our son's development in academic and social aspects, the school's focus, etc. I really enjoyed getting the monthly updates via email of what the children have enjoyed and learned with video and pictures, along with helpful developmental milestones for us as parents to be aware of. John and Lilly really care about the children and their families first and foremost and it really comes through in the way they run their school.

Perceptions and…read morebehaviors of exclusivity and not inclusivity were rampant throughout the whole process - even more obvious when you look at the classrooms and the makeup of the students. We went to the info sessions, sat in the class and watched a class in progress, met with the director, did the parents night and were declined admission; with no explanation at all, even when asked - just ghosted. We spent a lot of time preparing forms and talking to teachers and felt the least they could do was provide some clarity. My only assumption can be they reached their quota of ethnic children in the classroom. In the end, it was truly for the best, we ended up at Bright Horizons and had a phenomenal educational experience that prepared my very bright child over and beyond what was needed for kindergarten.

I wanted to share a my experience " interviewing " for this school a couple years ago…read more I was really excited for my toddler to attend a Montessori school. I was pregnant with my second child and had a busy job. We were invited a first time for a school tour and to meet with the director. I am a black woman and she told me all about her " black " friend. At some point I had to cut short the discussion to go back to work. The second test was an evening with other parents to discuss more about the philosophy of the school and ask our questions. There were multiple evenings planned. I was surprised when I arrived to discover that 70-80% of the room was composed of black parents or people of color. It was a surprise because when I visited the school, there were not many black kids. And the evening seemed more like a quizz / an exam. Our level of participation would indicate who would get the golden ticket for their child to attend. We didn't get it and I reached out to understand why. I never got an answer despite a couple emails. It left a bitter taste and I really felt manipulated. All that to say, it is a private school and they can build their own rules. But I question the values of diversity and inclusion of this school.

Our older son is in their Kindergarten program now in one classroom, and our younger son is in preschool in the other. My kids are not easy - they are loud and active, and the older has been diagnosed with Aspergers - but the teaching staff has been nothing but supportive, loving, and nurturing with them both, while instilling respect for the school rules and the peaceful classroom environment that they maintain. They have both grown and matured so much through their time here. There is a wealth of experience in the teachers (some have been at the school for 30 years!) which speaks to how invested they are in the school and its mission. As a bonus, I love some of the "extras" they teach to the traditional Montessori curriculum - Spanish, music, art and yoga have all been big hits with my kids. I'm glad that whatever awaits them in their future academic life, their first experience with it is one that they love and that has been so friendly and welcoming.

BHMS is really a special place. My oldest son was in Senora Estevez's class for two years…read more(including Kindergarten) and my younger son is in his first year in the same class. They have both thrived in the Montessori environment ... and have learned so much in such a short time. It is amazing to see such young kids making maps of the continents, Europe, the US and being able to identify small countries/states on a map (I think most kids are not exposed to a map of Europe until middle school!). The children have a weekly Spanish lesson, as well as music and yoga. I love the emphasis on a peaceful classroom, helping each other and showing respect to each other and the environment. In the afternoon Enrichment Program the younger children do amazing craft projects that they are always so proud of and the Friday afternoon baking projects are also a lot of fun. We have developed some wonderful friendships with the parents of our kids' classmates. It is great to meet parents that place the same emphasis on early childhood learning and the Montessori principles of independence, self- direction and respect for each other and the environment. The children also become very good friends and we continue to have regular "Kindergarten" reunions with my older son's classmates. I cannot recommend the school enough.
