Are you really a sewist in Nashville if you haven't frequented one of Textile Fabric's amazing sales? Seriously, the last time I went here (certainly not the last) around a week ago, they were having a 40% sale on all fabrics! Fantastic. The staff are always so helpful and friendly. They've helped me find boning, specific buttons, and other notions. I love how excited they get about the projects I'm planning as well! Did I mention the absolutely killer remnant section in the back of the store? I end up picking out 1-2yds from there every time, whether it's a beautiful linen or more recently, a fall corduroy. They have a wonderful private lot off of Craighead they share with the neighboring businesses, but it's never crowded, and I've always been able to get a space. Fabric is sooooo varied, from high end silk, tweeds, knits, cotton poplins, and fleece. I even saw baby sleepsack making material! Definitely make a trip here if you see. read more

Once we decided on the fabric, we called and Denise took our payment information and had our selection requirement ready for a quick payment. Visiting from out of town and was lucky enough to visit during their summer sale. Even if they hadn't been having a sale, I would have brought fabric - everything was much nicer than what I can find locally in my metropolitan area. Sew-ing, Sew-ing, Sew-WING...I'm a sewing machine...(to the tune of the Jackson 5's Dancing Machine.) Okay I'm not really a sewing machine, I'm a sewing novice with a machine. It's close, I'm weeks away from trying out for the 10th installment of Project Runway. Recently I signed up with the Stitch Sewing school. It was the perfect way to break in my new machine. With their recommendation, I stopped into Textile Fabric Store to pick-up supplies for this week's tote challenge. The place is huge, bigger than it looks from the outside. Not only that they had plenty of staff ready and willing to help. It took me awhile to pick out my fabric but that's only because there were a whole lot of amazing options. I might be bias because the patterns and colors were in my wheelhouse. If you are in need of cotton fabrics, Textile Fabric is the place to be. Yikes! This place is scary...scary AWESOME! That is, if your idea of awesome is being lost in yards and yards of great fabrics. This is so much better than one of those chain stores...the ladies in there really know what they are talking about, and the quality of the fabrics is top notch. Now, it is a little harder on the bank account, but totally worth it. They have a great selection of patterns, and not just the run of the mill ones that you find in any fabric store--they have patterns made by local seamstresses too, as well as vintage . Great selection of ribbon, buttons, etc etc etc. I could spend hours in this store dreaming up all of my creations--unfortunately, I tend to buy everything, but never go through with the actual "creating". I will be honest. I have a love/hate relationship with Textile Fabric. They have an amazing selection. They carry more than just quilting fabrics and actually somewhat cater to apparel sewing. However, I do have a few problems. 1. Hours of operation: if you work a 9-5, it is really not possible to have enough time to browse. You would have to go on a Saturday and it will of course be busy. 2. I have received spotty service. Sometimes its great, other times its terrible. I have gone in looking for something specific and never had a sales person greet me or even really look me in the eye. 3. The prices. Yes, I understand these are premium fabrics HOWEVER, I do think they are marked up more than they should be. I like to go here to see what some fabrics look like in person and then order them for a lot cheaper online. Overall, Textile has a great selection and cater to several types of crafters, but you may be better off going to a bigger fabric store in Atlanta or ordering online. read more

Oh my. I could easily spend every penny I have to my name here. It is a bit pricey, but you're always going to pay more when you're not shopping at a chain, so I'm not going to fuss over that. I'd estimate that I'm probably spending $5-10 more per trip than I would at joanns for similar items. But it costs that much in gas to get to any of the local Joann's and they often don't have what I'm looking for- so, yeah, this place wins. The first time I walked into this store, I started feeling a little faint as I walked towards their trims. I make vintage-inspired western wear, so I use a ton of this stuff and Textile fabrics selection is swoon-worthy. They have almost everything, in almost every color and variation imaginable. I make most of my own piping but it's nice to skip that step sometimes, and this place totally enables that- great selection, even have some metallics. Lots of different size options here too, which is a rare thing. What else? Sequins. Boy, do they have some sequins. And let me tell you- theirs are miles above the ones Joann's carries. This place has serious sequins, Joanns has kiddy craft sequins. I could go on, but I'd just be repeating myself. They carry tons of high quality variations of everything I'm looking for. The staff is helpful and pleasant, the store has a great atmosphere.. I can't think of anything negative about this place. I'm in love. Oh! One last thing. I'm a recent new orleans transplant, and I was kinda shocked and a little delighted to see that textile fabrics has more mardi gras (purple, green and gold combo) trims than any of the fabric stores I haunted in Louisiana. So I'm from LA. I'm in Nashville for a few days. I saw Textile Fabrics when I was driving. Went back to my friends house and looked them up and decided to go back to check it out when I had more time. This place is awesome. Gorgeous fabrics... BUT... it's way more expensive than it needs to be. They carry Amy Butler and a lot of designer prints, but one yard is $12.98. You can get those same exact prints on sew.mamma.sew for 8.98 a yard. So while this place is totally awesome, it's super overpriced. Also, it's not that sew.mama.sew is cheaper cause it's online. Those fabrics are the same prices throughout the greater LA and Seattle area. Save your money and buy elsewhere, if you are poor, but want awesome fabric! read more

I am like a kid in a candy store in this place. I have shopped at Textile Fabrics since I was a little girl and it has always had a great variety of high quality fabrics, primarily for clothing. From simple cottons to elaborate silks and wools - there are some great fabrics, with a good selection of trims and notions as well. Some people have complained about prices. Can't say I really know - but I don't really want to buy fabric online - being able to touch it and put combinations together in real life is important to me - so appreciate the convenience and selection available. As someone else said, the hours are not the most convenient, but I can manage to find time on a Saturday afternoon to get lost in the many bolts of color, pattern, texture . . . . I have to stop writing because it just makes me want to go back and buy more fabric. I have to cut myself off eventually. read more

As a man who is not involved in the textile arts, I cannot give Textile Fabrics a high review. I can however say this place is NO JOKE. I spent an hour there with my better half and I can tell you without a doubt the place is HUGE. The staff is very friendly, and they have lots and lots and lots of fabric and fabric related goodies. If I cared about the sorts of things one cares about when one shops here, I would certainly return. But next time, hopefully, the better half will stop in without me. read more

My mother is a home seamstress, so growing up being dragged to fabric stores with harsh lighting is what I am used to. What a breath of fresh air Textile Fabrics is! There is lighting, but I think it's a mix of natural light and less harsh bulbs. You can practically see the layout of the store from almost any angle. Cottons up front, suitings on the left, notions and patterns farther back, more expensive fabric (naturally) near the cutting area, a yarn area, the sales in a back room near the bathrooms, and buttons on display racks. There is an additional back area that isn't immediately seen -- that's where I had to go to get my elastic and they had other types of similar notions, there, as well. The place is pretty largely organized. I've been to Britex in San Francisco and Mood's in NYC and all sorts of other fabric stores in between -- there are always stacks of bolts piled high and crammed into every nook possible. Here, the bolts are for the most part upright and easy to look through. I don't know how busy they get -- I'm always surprised at the handful of workers they have at the ready at the checkout/cutting table. If someone happens to be around, they greet me and leave me alone until I actually need help. The prices leave much to be desired, unfortunately. I happened to Google some fabric I purchased and noticed that I paid more than what was being offered online. However, I'm sure shipping would offset the bus fare here. I'm trying my best to shop locally, but I'm sticking to the sales area until I am more gainfully employed. read more

Update from the store: Hi - I work at Textile, and I just wanted to let you know that you CAN exchange zippers and buttons. I've never seen any store take returns on patterns. I love the service here! They don't come up to you asking if you need anything, but if you ask for their help, the nice ladies will assist you with whatever you need. I was hopeful that the prices would be more like Jo-Ann's, but this place is pricey. The fabrics (and notions) are more high-end than Jo-Ann's, as they carry some designer fabrics, but if you're just looking for basic material for simple sewing projects, this store is too expensive. So I'll probably upgrade this to 5 stars once I explore more but when I stopped in I was on a single mission: cheetah! That's right, I stopped by Textile Fabric because I needed some cheetah fabric to make a tail and a pair of ears. That's all. I already have too much fabric for a girl that doesn't really know how to sew (yet)! The woman at the cutting counter looked at me like I was insane for only wanting 1/4 a yard of the cheetah fabric. My sister was on vacation in Nashville earlier this year and made a quick stop here. She came home with gorgeous dupioni silk in colors I haven't seen anywhere else. I called the store and asked if they would send a quick pic of their in stock silk. Instead I got a series of pictures with all the fabrics laid out on a table. Thanks to Sarah, the entire purchasing process was easy as pie. The fabric came today and it is all beautiful. This was the perfect marriage of great merch and superior customer service. read more

I've been in this store twice and no one said a word to me. They would walk right past me and go ask someone else if they needed help etc. In both cases I walked right out and still no goodbye...come back and see us....nothing. I had a lot of fun looking at all the fabric. I am mainly a quilter, but since I happened to be in town, I had to check it out. All the trim was droolworthy. I had to take pics of my favorites just in case. I picked a couple fabrics I couldn't live without and was tempted by many more. The prices are high, but I expected it. I wouldn't be able to afford enough fabric for a kimono costume, but fun boxer shorts yardage is doable. Where I live, Joann's is the only apparel fabric store and that does not cut it for clothes even though it is cheap. You get what you pay for. Online shops have more options, but I prefer to feel fabric in real life and support local businesses. read more

Me and a friend visited this store ( at the new location) and we were in awe by the different fabrics. The store do have a great selection, but they are not cheap at all. Of course you can't expect material to be dirt cheap. But I did question the prices because I've been to other stores who offered the same product but for less. I was looking for a specific blend of material and found it with no problem. The price was much out of my range. Went to another store, found the EXACT same fabric/brand, and the price per yard was about $5 or $6 cheaper. As far as the staff, we were practically ignored. My friend had a question about some facing, no one was available or walked by us. Literally, no one said a word to us while we were there and the place wasn't crowded. This didn't sit well with me or my friend so we left. read more

I have developed a very expensive habit of stopping by Textile on my lunch break to browse the remnants and clearance fabrics. I've seen several reviews about the prices - which are certainly higher than JoAnn's or similar stores, but so is the quality and the experience. If you're budget minded go straight back to the little room in the back - you won't be disappointed! The employees are great too, but if you need help go to straight to the counter and ask - they aren't going to come over just cause you wander around looking lost. (That's how I look most of the time I'm there - I'm really just daydreaming about new projects...) I know not everyone can, but I don't mind paying a little more, because I value local businesses run by good people who know their stuff :-) read more

To MistyL in Calif.: I've enjoyed all reviews. You spoke of 'sew.mama.sew'...I couldn't find it online. I'm going to Huntsville next week and intend to stop there for the 1st time. Louisville lost their best store about 2 years ago, so we who love beautiful fabrics don't have anywhere to go. We do have 'The Smocking Shoppe' which is WONDERFUL, and carries gorgeous fabrics for children and quilting. It's just not big enough to carry more. So I plan on being there next Thurs. read more

The store clerks tend to carry on running conversations behind the counter...which is fine, except for the fact that they talk politics and do so loudly. Perhaps they assume that every customer who walks in the door agrees with their political slant, but anyone who deals with the public (especially ladies of their age) should know that half of their customers lean left and half lean right. I've only been to the store twice, but both times I was assaulted (and insulted) by their characterizations of people like me. They made hateful and smug comments that made it clear they would not want to do business with anyone who felt differently...so I will oblige them and go to a store that can't afford to offend its customers. read more

They have nice fabric but everything is Waaayyyy overpriced. I seen some fabric for $13 a yard there and went to Joann's they had the exact same fabric & by the same company for $3 a yard...none of the employees spoke to me or made eye contact with me while I was their, I was interested in purchasing some beautiful sewing emblems & silk fabric but when I went to the employee for help she walked right past me a African American,, to ask a Caucasian lady if she needed help,.,after that I politely walked out and don't plan on ever returning:( read more
