While looking for a place to stay in Waxahachie, Texas, I came across The English Merchant Inn, a…read morebed and breakfast. This place intrigued me and decided to book this place for a week, since I was tagging along a business trip my husband had. Check in for this hotel is between 3- 6 pm. Unfortunately, my husband and I were not able to check in during that time and luckily had been able to get ahold of Howard, one of the owners of this place, and told us he would still be awake to check in until ~10 pm, when he goes to bed. But that he would leave the key in the cottage, where I had booked to get in, in case we come in after that. Howard was very nice when we met him (we ended up arriving after 9 pm). He showed us to the cottage, which is a small little place behind the main house (where there are 4 other rooms). The cottage has a king size bed with small living room. The bathroom is just a short few steps away from the sink. There is also a shower and a footed tub. I'm not a fan of baths and so I booked this place specifically for the shower. I wasn't too sure if the rooms inside the main house had showers, as I only saw photos of the footed tub (but there are a few rooms that do. I believe the room on the first floor only has a tub). The living room had a large TV and a Keurig machine with plenty of coffee and tea pods. I liked that a lovely tea set was provided to have my tea made in. As for breakfast, Howard had provided information for 3 places around town that we could get breakfast at. We ended up going to the White Rhino Coffee a few times and also El Mexicano Grill once. Overall, I would say that staying here was comfortable. Howard was very friendly and greatly appreciated him showing my husband and I a tour of the main house and most of the guest rooms (as we were the only ones staying at this bed and breakfast). But there were a few things that I want to mention that was unexpected. One was the daily housekeeping. Because my husband was at work during the day, I was staying in the cottage by myself. On our first day, my husband picked me up during his lunch so that we could pick up lunch at a nearby restaurant and then eat it at the cottage. When we came back, our door was wide open. I was surprised and thought I had forgotten to lock the door. But when I came in, I saw Tony, a friendly employee removing the sheets from our bed and putting on new ones. He told me that normally he comes by in the morning while guests typically would go out for breakfast but that he was late today. I had told him we didn't need housekeeping the next day. However, he came by, but only because I had asked Howard for some more tea pods for the Keurig, so he had Tony come by to provide new ones and clean towels. I didn't know if Tony would come but had a feeling, so I tried to take a shower very quickly when I woke up the next morning. The door that has the sink does not lock and because the way the shower and the mirror at the sink is angled, you can see someone taking a shower. This definitely made me feel uncomfortable, not knowing if Tony would come in for housekeeping and see me. Another thing that I want to mention is the train that goes all day and all night. The first morning we were here, I heard the train sounding the horn at 6:45 am and kept on going. My husband told me that typically the train will sound the horn when passing by intersections so cars know to stay back. I didn't really hear the trains too much later that first night. However, on the last night, the trains were going off all night long. I was so incredibly tired and severely sleep deprived when we woke up early the next day for our flight to fly back home to Los Angeles. I hardly was able to sleep (the train horn is very loud and you can hear it from several miles away). Also just wanted to mention that I heard a rooster around 6:30 am every morning and also heard the rooster in the afternoon each day. Same with hearing dogs barking. These noises didn't bother me but the train sound was definitely a problem. Of course these outside noises are not the fault of The English Merchant Inn but wanted to mention them. I really enjoyed my stay in the cottage at The English Merchant Inn but not entirely sure if I can stay again with all the noise. Where the majority of hotels are in this city, they are on the outskirts of town. According to my husband (he has traveled to Waxahachie several times for work), you can't hear the trains from the hotels, where he stayed before). If I was to stay here again, I would have to bring some really good ear plugs to block out all the noise for a restful night's sleep.

The lobby smelled like typical hotel cleaning chemicals, strong, but nothing horrible and then we got to our room and it smelled like somebody had poured a gallon of a mixture of Pine-Sol and Fabulosa on our floors it was so strong my eyes watered and burned, and I could barely breathe. I went down to the front desk and asked if they had any maybe carpeted rooms that wouldn't have such a strong smell and she said no they were sold out and no carpet. We really couldn't change hotels by this point so I asked for maybe a mop I could maybe mop up the smell a little bit so I tried that I tried towels on the floor just went over and over the floors which helped a tiny bit, but I ended up sleeping with a face mask on all night and I am up this morning my eyes are red and watery. I know some people like the cleaning smell, but it was so unbearably strong for me. On a positive note, the breakfast was good and clean standard hotel breakfast. The pool was fantastic, clean and warm. I stayed in the pool as long as I possibly could. And the staff was also very friendly. Just don't stay here if you can't tolerate extremely strong chemical smells.

Not sure why the average Yelp star rating is 2??…read more I usually stay at Hilton properties, but since I've already hit my Diamond status for the year, I've been aiming to maintain my Marriott Gold status as well. With several work trips coming up, I decided to give Marriott some attention--and that's how I ended up booking my first stay at a Fairfield Inn. While searching for Marriott options in Waxahachie, this property stood out with generally positive reviews online (except Yelp apparently!), especially around cleanliness. Although the photos online made the décor and color scheme look a bit dated, I ultimately chose it based on the strong feedback. I drove in from Austin on a Monday night and check-in was smooth and easy. One small note: I wasn't offered any complimentary water bottles at check-in, which is something I've typically received at other Marriott properties with status, so that was a little surprising. My room, however, was very spacious and--true to the reviews--clean. The bed was comfortable, the pillows were soft and plush (just how I like them), and there were plenty of towels. No complaints on room comfort. The next morning, I was pleasantly surprised by the complimentary breakfast. In addition to the usual buffet staples, they had a kale, spinach, and egg white frittata that really stood out. It was like a larger version of the Starbucks egg white bites--basically two in one--and it tasted great, with a nice hint of cheese. There were also breakfast potatoes, Chobani yogurt, an oatmeal/yogurt topping bar, and decent coffee. Definitely above average for a complimentary hotel breakfast. Overall, I had a very good stay. If you're looking for a Marriott brand hotel in the Waxahachie area, this Fairfield Inn is a solid choice. Clean, comfortable, and a surprisingly good breakfast to start your day.

The check in was easy but I did not get receive the customary "thank you" for being an elite member. It's a small thing but I have grown accustomed to it. Our room was clean and adequate size. The beds were comfortable but the pillows were not. They need to invest in better pillows. The drawers in the dresser did not stay closed, not sure why. The main reason for 3 stars is that the heater/ac was very loud so we had to turn it off to sleep. Plus, I asked to be away from highway but we were placed at the end of the hotel that was closest to the highway, so there was some noise at night. On the positive side, there is a decent free breakfast and they have free parking.

I've stayed many places in many hotels/motels alike. This is by far the worst place I've endured. The grounds are not kept to start. There is trash spread throughout the parking lot as if there is no maintenance. Upon checkin, The rooms, while barren is too be expected with an motel, however the floors were unswept and definitely unmopped. The sheets were stained, the towels were dirty as if something had splashed on them. The tub had hair from the previous occupant(s), the fridge was rusted out and only half the lights in the room worked. The pool was like warm which again, too be expected in the area. I had a package that was delivered in my name with my room number on it and it was denied by Nick. While the package was important, there was no mention to me of the delivery. I had to find out on my own and inquire and then read given the response "just call the man and he will let you know what to do" the to do was to retrieve my package from the front desk. Extremely irritating. The following morning I went to eat my own breakfast and grab a coffee from the front desk and was met by Nick again and day old coffee, no tea or hot water. When I asked him if he wouldn't mind putting on a pot, he told me it was after 10am. Apparently they only make coffee until 10am?? It's literally HOT WATER. SMH He went on further to say, "You were told at check in we only have this setup from 6-10am." Mind you, if you notice in the pic, there was NOBODY around and no one was busy with maintenance (obviously) so there should have been no reason to not accommodate the guests, right? I explained i was not this that at check in, abs met with his response, "That's your fault not mine" Wow! So much for that Texas hospitality. I guess that doesn't apply to him. All in all, Nick the presumed owner, was unprofessional, rude, unaccommodating, unclean, unkept and definitely needs some hospitality training if he plans on being successful others he's doing a great job and killing it at being a slumlord. I would NOT recommend this establishment for anyone and would rather pay the additional elsewhere or even tent camp in preference to this place again. Zero or less than zero stars should be a rating.
