# I Brought My Entire Life to the DPS. They Needed Two Things. 10/10…read more - NOTE CROSS POSTED ON GOOGLE a I have not lost my driver's license in 25 years. Last week? Happened. We're not talking about it. We're moving forward. I'm currently laid off and job hunting, so a valid ID is not optional. Because I didn't have my audit number, I couldn't renew online -- I had to go in person. To the DPS. Voluntarily. Now, I'm a policy nerd. Terms and conditions are my bedtime reading. So you'd THINK decoding exactly what documents I needed would be easy. It was not. By the time I was done, I walked into that office with: my birth certificate, Social Security card AND the receipt for requesting it, my lease, my high school diploma, college transcripts, degree, graduation photos, and my college ID. **I am 45 years old. I brought my academic career as a character witness for my own existence.** Here's the thing though -- the staff at South General McMullen did not need any of that energy from me because THEY had it handled. The office was organized, efficient, and genuinely warm. People were greeted at the door, directed immediately, and when someone got frustrated about a missing document, staff stepped in calmly and gave them a real next step. No chaos. No attitude. Just competence with a smile. I waited about an hour and 20 minutes for my number. Once called? Window in 5 minutes, done in another 5. They also accept Apple Pay (saved my life -- lost my wallet too, it was a week), there are outlets near the entrance for charging your phone, and if you opt in for text reminders you can check in 30 minutes early from your phone. Also: they may already have your documents on file from your Real ID. Ask before you panic. You might not need the graduation photos. The DPS is one of the few places in America where every age, background, and tax bracket ends up in the same room. It's actually a beautiful little snapshot of community -- and this staff keeps it running beautifully. Huge thank you to everyone at this location. Y'all are awesome, efficient, and lowkey hilarious. The banter alone made the wait worth it. *-- A woman who showed up with her transcripts and left with a glow-up ID photo. No notes.*

I recently visited this DMV to have my Hawaii drivers license transferred to a Texas one. I admit I…read morewas looooong overdue (at least here in Texas you are required to transfer your license within 90 days). Covid hit shortly after I moved & life was turned upside down for everyone. Now that I've once again moved (this time from Houston to SA), I decided I had to just get it over with. This office is currently operating by APPOINTMENT ONLY. I was able to easily schedule online back in March but the wait was a month long. Hopefully it's gotten better since then. When you arrive, you will submit to a screening (sanitize your hands, temperature taken & the guard asks a few simple questions like whether you have any symptoms or were exposed to someone with Covid recently). There are self check-in tablets available & then you'll have a seat until your number is called. I printed & filled out my application form at home & also used the online check in option that was provided in my appointment confirmation email.
