Texas State Capitol is a great free tourist attraction to check out if you are vacationing the first time in Austin. Typically I like to go to the state capitol in any state I am visiting (if I am in the right city), the nerd in me, and so my husband and I decided to come here. We ended up visiting the state capitol twice during our winter vacation.
What I think is unique about this state capitol is that they typically close at 10 pm. But free tours only go until 4:30 pm Monday through Friday and 3:30 pm on weekends. Please note that when you come at night, there are certain places that are closed off to the public, that includes the Senate Chamber and House of Representative Chamber. But if you come at night, it is a lot quieter if you prefer that kind of experience, since it is pretty busy during the day (at least when we were there during the Christmas holiday).
Anyways, we came back another day and it was really crowded with people, strollers, families, etc. We ended up finding the South Foyer area to wait for the free tour (inside the employee was really rude when I asked to make sure this was where we were supposed to wait for the tour. It would be easier if there was a sign so she doesn't have to be bothered with questions... Government, go figure).
Anyways, because it was pretty crowded, it was really hard to hear our tour guide. I wished she spoke louder because she was also kind of soft spoken. She could really benefit from a portable microphone and speaker. This tour covered very general information, which part of it is included in the self guided tour (you can pick up a pamphlet or look it over on the state capitol's website). The tour took us into the Senate Chamber and House of Representatives room. It was nice that both rooms were decorated in Christmas fashion with a large tree and ornaments. If you are in this room, be sure to look up and look at the large circular light. It actually spells out Texas (see my photo), which I thought was pretty neat.
To be honest, this tour was the least interesting of all the state capitols that we have visited. This tour was short at just barely 30 minutes (maybe a few minutes shy of it) and wouldn't recommend it unless it was not crowded and you have an extra 30 minutes that you can spare here. You are better off learning more from Tipster Tours, free tours throughout Austin. Check out the tour that meets at the state capitol.
One thing that I think is really interesting about this state capitol is that there is an extended level on the basement. It is even bigger than upstairs (according to our tour guide, she did not take us down here but had suggested checking it out via elevator). Down here is a restaurant (closed during our visit), a gift shop, a food court (also closed) and offices for the senators and house of representatives. There are actually very clean restrooms by these offices by the way.
Please note that when entering any of the entry ways into the capitol, you will need to go through metal detectors and place your items onto the belt (surprisingly this is the 2nd state capitol that I have been to that has one, the first being Washington DC).
Although food and drinks are not allowed, you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it up when you clear the security check.
Please note that there is metered parking on the street and also a parking structure a few blocks away. Parking is not free in the parking structure but during our day visit to the capitol, parking was free (but don't think normally it is). read more
