Situated at the bottom of Whiteladies Road, just before the descent into proper Bristol centre, it has a large glass architectural feature at its front, with its name highlighted. The biggest shop in the centre is Sainsburys, which is very useful for all in the area as the next big supermarket is quite a distance away. With free parking for half an hour, it's a really convenient place to get a bite to eat or stock up on your way home from town. They recently re-did the inside as well, adding some flat elevators that can take you (and your trolley) up to the car park level. There's mostly chain shops in here, with WH Smith, Specsavers, Boots and O2, but there's also a local flower shop, key cutters and sports shop. Although not strictly still the shopping centre, there's a nice row of shops outside as well, housing another mix of chain and independent stores.

Nothing particualry special to draw in the people, other thsn some rain cover, this relativly newly refurbished centre lacks in any pullling power. However saying that they do have them falt escalator things that can take you and your shopping trolley up a level! They are pretty brilliant!

But even though it's part of a chain, House of Fraser should be commended for making it look as though it's an independent department shop. Spread over three levels it's a one-stop shop for ladies who love retail; there's fashion, cosmetics, homeware and a cafe to sit down after an exhausting shopping session. It may all seem a bit middle class but look closely and there's plenty for younger girls too. There's an Oasis, Benefit, MAC and All Saints to name but a few stands. Not the cheapest of places, but a lovely place to go if you're trying to please a whole family of shoppers. They also hold weekly one-off events so make sure you pop in to see what's happening in-store.

Staff are either very young or old (some of the ladies in the clothes area must be over 70 - lovely people, not so hot on the till technology) and are ALWAYS pushing the storecard.

Wilkinsons is the logical replacement, in reality, although I hate to admit it, they are probabley better than Woolworths. What I like about it too is that it doesn't just sell its cheaper own brands if you feel like a bit of luxury. Very good location in the centre of Bristol and it's a really large store which divided into two floors. The upper floor is for everyday household products and the lower is a larger section for kitchen, bathroom and bedroom goods. I have recently bought a lovely set of curtains for £7.99 which easily look like they are worth £30...bargin! Usually long queues of upwards of 10minutes though.

They have a great cross-section of clothing ranges from Levis to Jaeger. They also have a great homes section with crockery by Vera Wang and Jasper Conran giving it cool points but their own brand range is pretty fine stuff as well. The beauty section is stuffed with goodies and I also really like their selection of notebooks and diaries. The best bit however is that they are possibly the only department store in Bristol to have kept their haberdashery section, and it is gorgeous - great wool, interesting selection of fabrics and of course, as with the rest of the store, really helpful staff.

The prices here are fairly cheap; you can come in and end up buying everything for your house that you never even realised you needed until you saw it, and it'll all cost you less than £30. If you have someone with a DIY-ish bent, The Range is a nice alternative to the B&Qs of this world, instead offering something a little gentler and more homely looking than the Terminator-esque utilitarian layout of most hardware stores.
