Had driven past this emporium many times and often wondered what it was like inside. One evening I…read moredesperately needed some frozen peas and Waitrose was shut so I decided to take the plunge. Well... what a truly surreal ordeal. An air-hanger-esque cathedral of produce awaited me. Guadily lit with bright white strip lighting. As well as groceries were countless aisles of cheap clothing, toys, games and various bric-a-brac. And the denizens were no less bizarre. There was a small boy dressed as the comic book character Spider Man running around unsupervised. Occassionally he would just stand there staring at me as I tried to locate the frozen vegetable section in this labyrinth of comestibles. A truly un-nerving experience.

There are always trolleys available although they are often wet from the rain as there is insufficient cover for them. The store operates a self scan system if that is your thing although often it doesn't work and the queues at the special tills are often longer than the regular tills. Fruit and veg never seems to last long from here even compared to the much cheaper offerings from Morrisons. Pricewise it compares to Waitrose but there's no comparison in quality! There is an ever-shrinking fresh meat section and it often looks poor. The butcher counter is also small and rarely has much on it to tempt. My biggest grip here though is that I can rarely do a complete shop here and it's not because I want odd items. I've lost count of the number of times they've been out of stock of basics such as fresh milk, eggs, bread or chicken breasts. The queues are always long in here although the staff are quite pleasant. Good for a late night chemist. There is a cafe and toilets, both reasonaly clean.

Word to the wise for US visitors…read more... They drive on the left side of the road. But that part is easy. The hard part is avoiding getting slammed in the shopping aisles because yes, they even walk down the aisles on the left side. So unless you want to get bashed around by a very polite group of old ladies, blend in and move to the left. If spending enough at Whole Foods while at home in the US isn't enough, this is where I go to REALLY spend the big bucks. Waitrose is basically a bigger, better, cooler version of Whole Foods but instead of everything being at least $20, everything is 20 pounds. This location is right across the street from my office so when I am looking for some prepackaged bangers and mash with gnarly mushy peas, I bust out my ATM card and let her rip. Centre.

Wider selection of clothes and other non-food items than the Tesco I shopped last week, including a small shoe department (boots!) and an aisle of kitchen items (drip coffee maker for £7!). With this shop, I think I've fully kitted out my flat. Prices are in line with what I expected, as Asda is "part of the Wal-Mart family". Slightly lower than Tesco and much lower than the urban Sainsbury's in Reading Town Centre. It's a huge store and it's very easy to spend a couple of hours in here without realizing it. One annoying thing - Bill, the greeter, kept announcing on the overhead how much he'd love to help and kept pointing out the specials and hours. Between that and the Asda advertisements (mostly Christmas specials and electronics items), there was barely a moment of peace. I have no idea how Brits got by before these mega-stores came to be. This store literally sells every type of food and in many different varieties. Lots of ready-to-cook and ready-to-serve items in many departments. Compared to the States, the produce section was much larger. It was also a little odd (as an American) seeing a massive aisle of spirits (whiskey, scotch, etc.). In many places back home, these are in a separate section or even a different store to keep them away from the kiddies. Loads of parking and a petrol station, Asda is also served by the Reading bus lines - numbers 21 and 22 stop right in front after a ~20 minute ride from the depot. I snapped and posted pictures for you!
