This store has been my local for as long as it's been here (it was a ramshackle Nisa before that) and as such I have shopped in it through both the good times and the incredibly poor times!
Currently, it's not good at all for the regular shopper. They have a habit of stocking decent lines for a while then they disappear. If you want frozen peas forget it - their diddy one-freezer section consists mostly of massive bags of okra (??) & poorer quality, low-end pizzas. The frozen fish I like has disappeared, whilst empty spaces (unreplenished good lines), ice cream, one-portion Admiral's pie for a quid and frozen lasagne (ugh) flourish in this post-horsemeat, winter environment. And they are there for ages. Nobody wants this stuff!
The meat section has been moved from a very good place (mid-aisle) to an unbelievably buffoonish spot: On the end of the busiest aisle, usually part-blocked by a massive trolley cage! Needless to say, there's always a bottleneck and 'excuse-me', 'sorry' to be seen and heard in that area. People always linger at the meat (ooo Matron!) to choose what to have, so why the hell was this done? The decent flow around the store has been lost.
If you want a pack of good chicken thighs (without crappy drumsticks), FROZEN PEAS, mid- to decent quality frying steak, a 3-pack of garlic, and many other standard (but not here!) fare, go to Marks and Spencer two minutes up the road (towards Holland Park) and return to this store late afternoon and early evening for discounting only.
It's a shame Tesco has let this store go down the Swanee. The suits that came to pose in huddles to decide on the 're-jig' should be demoted. If all the ordering is done from Head Office and not locally, it shows a lack of interest in goods that people interested in value actually want to buy. Lets face it, the really wealthy don't shop much in Tesco Notting Hill.
The 'deleted' items mentioned above flew off the shelves (gone in the following couple of days), intermittently re-ordered, then... never again.
The staff here are generally lovely, but even they look bedraggled by poor decision-making & the draining atmosphere that comes from that. Who's responsible and why aren't you doing something about it? Bring back the wonderful Welsh manager who created a great buzz about the place and was always in the mix, communicating with staff, pitching in and giving equally gracious, helpful attention to customers. Where is he?
If you just pop in for a bottle of wine, Finest items or a sandwich, then fine. For regular shoppers this store has lost its care, its touch and its common sense. And in the case of the meat moving saga, its bloody-minded mind.. read more
