Items for sale can sometimes be a little hit-or-miss depending on what they were able to purchase, but the usual basics are usually in stock. There typically isn't more than one brand of any item, but the quality is decent. Produce is varied and the frozen section is good. Dairy is also limited, but there is a reasonable choice in the booze and personal care areas. Service is minimal - other than a few shelf-stockers and one or two checkout staffers, there's no one there. The location is right next to the Reading West Station, on Oxford Road. As with some other stores, do have your £1 coin to deposit for a trolley ("cart" or "wagon" in American) though the hand-carry baskets are available. Two warnings. Bags are NOT free here - you either bring your own or you purchase them as you pack. They do NOT accept credit cards or checks. It's cash or debit card only. Yes, I would return. However the downside is that there may be things on my shopping list that aren't on offer, so I might end up in Tesco or Sainsbury's instead.

Just like the other Tesco I shopped last month, this store is massively huge with a major selection of produce (two aisles!), cheese, meats, and then dry goods. I'm almost glad I don't have a car, because my carrying capacity limited my spending budget here. The store also has a little snack restaurant, though I thought it had a pretty good selection for a cafeteria style deal. Great hours, it's open from Monday at 06:00 until Saturday at 22:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. (Aside from the bus issue.) There's a petrol station in the parking area and a "freephone" near the tills for calling a taxi.

Wider selection of clothes and other non-food items than the Tesco I shopped last week, including a small shoe department (boots!) and an aisle of kitchen items (drip coffee maker for £7!). With this shop, I think I've fully kitted out my flat. Prices are in line with what I expected, as Asda is "part of the Wal-Mart family". Slightly lower than Tesco and much lower than the urban Sainsbury's in Reading Town Centre. It's a huge store and it's very easy to spend a couple of hours in here without realizing it. One annoying thing - Bill, the greeter, kept announcing on the overhead how much he'd love to help and kept pointing out the specials and hours. Between that and the Asda advertisements (mostly Christmas specials and electronics items), there was barely a moment of peace. I have no idea how Brits got by before these mega-stores came to be. This store literally sells every type of food and in many different varieties. Lots of ready-to-cook and ready-to-serve items in many departments. Compared to the States, the produce section was much larger. It was also a little odd (as an American) seeing a massive aisle of spirits (whiskey, scotch, etc.). In many places back home, these are in a separate section or even a different store to keep them away from the kiddies. Loads of parking and a petrol station, Asda is also served by the Reading bus lines - numbers 21 and 22 stop right in front after a ~20 minute ride from the depot. I snapped and posted pictures for you!

I'm surprised by the…read morequantity of supermarkets located in Reading, but they're all pretty busy, so there is clearly enough business to support them all. As is the expected case with an urban location, the aisles are a little narrow. The store itself is deceptively large as it only has a single-wide storefront, but it goes back quite a way. The produce section is good and there is a large series of coolers with prepared meals that only need unpackaging and heating to be ready. The booze aisle had more spirits than lagers and ales. Uh, I didn't really shop much more than that. The queue ('line' in American) for the tills ('registers') was long but it was orderly and well managed, even if it did extend into the shopping area. Once I made it to the check-out clerk, she was efficient and friendly. Sainsbury's has a frequent shopper program - you get bonus points if you bring or recycle bags, as I did. The deli and fresh fish counters offer a lot of choice, and they even have a large 'Polish food' section. They have two 'car trolleys' which amuse small (and big) kids greatly, and make the shopping trip easier with children who are too big for the trolley seats but too small to walk all the way around without whining. Staff are friendly and helpful, and offers on food are good value.
Waitrose & Partners

Continuing my odyssey to shop at all the British supermarkets, Sarah and I (Sarah's my new bicycle)…read moretreked out to the nearest Waitrose. Arriving just before opening hour, there was a crowd of about 30 people waiting to get in, which is usually a good sign. Massive parking lot and a bike rack for Sarah. Clean and bright on the inside, Waitrose has the flavor of Publix (for those of you in the Southeast) or Harris-Tetter (Mid-Atlantic). Higher end products and lots of organics. When was the last time you were in a shop (other than Wal-Mart or Target) that had a display of iPods as well as organic produce? Prices were a little bit (but not much) higher than Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury, but there were also a good number of items that I've not seen at those stores. Excellent wine section and a fresh cheese section (you know Brits and their cheese!) plus a fresh fishmonger and butcher. I was quite impressed and glad I had only Sarah's saddlebags to limit my purchases or I could have gone quite overboard. Waitrose has some interesting convenience features. They do free delivery (as they all do here) but they also have a clever hand scanner that you 'check-out' when you enter the store. As you put your groceries into the trolley, you scan each one. At the end of your shop, you bring the scanner to a special register, pay for what you've scanned, and then leave. You can completely avoid any human interaction if you so choose. Several of the trolleys have a special holder (like a cup-holder) for the doo-dad! Speaking of trolleys, Waitrose has more than the two sizes (small and large) I've spotted at Tesco and Asda. There are also ones that hook to wheelchairs and double-baby seats and double-toddler seats. And several have a clipboard attached for your shopping list. Pretty slick! Waitrose publishes a free weekend tabloid style magazine as well as a £1 glossy recipe guide. A rather expensive way to reach out to customers and plug certain items, but I liked it. Also a quarter-inch thick catalog for home delivery. A very pleasant shopping experience with a good selection and convenience. If it wasn't so far from where I am, I could see Waitrose being my regular shopping destination. Note: this Waitrose has a Costa inside with plenty of seating.

Tesco Extra
Conspicuous consumers of the world, unite! Your altar is at hand!…read more This Tesco "Extra" is just like the Walmart Supercenter you've experienced (and gotten lost in) in the States, only the prices are just a little higher and all four wheels on the carts pivot (which I find weird). Imagine that Wal-Mart where the center section of clothes is ALL FOOD and there's only a narrow section at the side for DVD's and housewares. Perhaps not as much variety in the non-food areas, but the food section is jaw droppingly massive. The produce all looks very fresh and the deli offers all sorts of take-away meals that are table-ready for serving. Majorly huge frozen section too! I've never seen an entire aisle of cheese in my life before this. And at least ten feet of butter choices. Maybe next time, I'll post photos. Fantastic hours, it's open from Monday at 06:00 until Saturday at 22:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. Staff including the female manager firstly, was very uninterested in what my query was and was extremely rude herself in delivering information; I went there to exchange my Finish dishwasher tablets today (as i bought the item from there), even though they still have them in the shop they told me It can not be exchanged without the receipt that "I should try in Sainsbury's or Asda instead". She clearly did not put effort to help me or spend time listening in what my problem was. Sainsbury's and Asda have always been the best in carrying out their customer service, they were happy to help even though it was not their product. I am not one to ever complain/or write a review, however i felt i was treated so shockingly that i am never going to shop at Tesco's superstore again. "Customer is always right" definetly does not apply to Tesco's apalling standards.
