Tequila Barrel was recommended to us by someone that frequents Playa, so it was an easy decision to stop when passing by. TB is right on 5th and advertised some pretty nice specials, like "garbage can" nachos and 5 beers for something like $10US. The nachos were nicely loaded and pretty tasty especially for the price. What made us stay was the big screen playing 80's and 90's videos - what's better than watching "Ice Ice Baby" and "Word Up" on a sunny afternoon while eating nachos and drinking beer? Located right on 5th so a very touristy spot but it's definitely one of the more livelier places in Playa del Carmen. They have dancers and some kind of performance every hour or so. The bar tender does crazy tricks and there's always a crowd stopping and watching from the outside. read more

Great place to come and watch the the game and lay a wager. Also a great place to party with the DJ in the front and take in the streets. The staff is very attentive and their cocktails are great. They don't short-change you like some of the other places in town on the drinks. Football Sundays here are excellent! I'll deduct one star because I haven't been blown away by the food. We found this fun sports bar while staying in Playa del Carmen for my birthday trip last week. The Celtics were playing the 76ers and we were looking for a spot to grab some food and watch the game. This ending up being perfect. The manager was very accommodating in finding us a good table right in front of the TV with the game. We ordered fajita nachos, sweet and spicy chicken tenders and a couple of beers. The food was nothing special but good for bar food. The service was great and there was live entertainment all around us. They had 3 girls that did little dances on the bar and gave us a free cocktail, a bartender doing really impressive flair and free tequila shots for joining in on line dances. read more

Wasn't expecting the trash can nachos to be so sweet! Didn't bother eating. Sent it back and still paid. Salt and pepper wings were good and crispy - the only positive. Giving a 2 when maybe this place deserves a 1. Service was not at all attentive even though there were more servers than patrons, and the server went ahead and charged herself a 200 peso (50%) tip on my card even though she was not attentive and I had to flag her down for every little thing. She also kept my friend's tip and payment in cash without applying the full amount to the bill, so even more to their pockets. Probably should have told the manager, but everything was so difficult, I was done fighting. Free drinks for ladies night were basically just pineapple juice. At least my immune system is fully boosted with vitamin c. Only go here if you are ok with your money being taken for little reward. read more

Stopped in here as a meeting place to meet some friends while we were in Mexico. We stayed for a few drinks and listened to some music. For the most part all rules were followed the same way as back home in the states (masks unless your sitting). They weren't super strict but I can say all the workers definitely always had their masks on. They were all very nice and were attentive. I didn't like the nachos but my husband loved them so ‍ I gave 4 stars bc I'd been craving bar food and it fulfilled that need. This past Saturday while vacationing in PDC, we decided to checkout the downtown scene and leave the resort for a bit. We aren't into the club scene so this bar seemed a good spot, and the betting area in the back had air conditioning which is a huge win in these parts. We didn't order any food, so I cannot comment on that however we felt comfortable hanging out in the back area and although we weren't betting, just sat at the bar and had some beers. Originally we ordered a Tecate and an Indio before considering specials. I inquired and the bartender told us that they had Tecate buckets for only a little more than double the price of 1 Tecate. I asked if we could retroactively apply this which she said we could and sent 4 more our way. 6 beers was about 25 with tip. That's American prices, but that's what we expected and had an enjoyable time. Two very big thumbs up for this place. We were on vaca in riviera maya and looking for a 1080 HD screen to watch the 2015 NCAA basketball championship game. Our hotel was inadequate and we wanted to get the US feed so we could hear some analysis, some commentary. This bar was excellent! They were very accommodating and the atmosphere was great. Beef tacos and burgers were very good and plenty of good tequila shots to choose from. There is also a legal betting salon in the back of the bar so you can place a wager on the event you are watching. Beer list is limited, but I'm nitpicking at this time. I always stop by here a couple of times when I have visited PDC the past 5 years. It is a fun and hopping place that has some great 80's music and videos mixed in with current high octane music. The sports theme is nice and all in all, it is probably the best thing for tourists who want a break from the norm in the area and get a little bit of the U.S. back in their blood. The margaritas are good but nothing special. It's a high volume place so it isn't like they are taking their time in handcrafting a work of art in a glass so if you are expecting that, go to maybe a smaller place that takes more time. This is all about the loud music, the sports, the show(dancing on the bar) and the bartenders doing the bottle flips, etc. It definitely has a place down here. The bar has a back room with A/C for watching and betting on sports events. The food is adequate (think of your local generic sports bar fare back in the states) and it serves up plenty of different shades of spirits and the standard cervezas. Night of 3/18/17 while on vacay we were passing by ths bar and since this is a sports bar, I asked to watch a Mexico league soccer game (involving the #1 ranked team Guadalajara). Considering this is México and the primary sport there is soccer, I figured this would be cake, instead I was told by the bartender that he would have to consult with his manager who instructed him the request could not be completed. I asked for the privilege of meeting the manager and she arrived promptly putting herself in front of me with a firm and direct, No. She proceeded with explaining that a client was on his way to watch the hockey game playing on the 2 TVs in front of us. Both were a replay of the same game and no one sitting in the tables behind us appeared to care about it, of which I tried to explain to her on multiple occassions, and the bar area next to us was empty. I explained that I could watch my game while her client arrived to watch the hockey replay but instead she offered to accommodate my request but was told specifically that this would occur in the back area of the bar. She reassured me that I could still order drinks over there. I am a manager myself and gave her advice about the essentials of customer service especially with a request that wasn't very unreasonable. I usually don't bother writing unfavorable reviews but in this case it is worth every effort. read more

First of all this is not Mexican food! We stopped by to have dinner on our stay in Playa del Carmen. My husband and I both ordered the enchilada platter, the chicken was bland. The enchilada sauce was somewhat spicy but how can you can call that an enchilada? It is not an actual Mexican enchilada. The customer service was horrible. It took 10 min or longer to get a beer. It seemed like they cared more about making money than having customers satisfied. We were still eating, when they started wiping of our table and dropped our check. This is absolutely wrong. We went here a couple times during our stay in Playa Del Carmen- the first time was just to grab a quick drink before dinner and the second time was to watch the UFC fight on Saturday night. We had good experiences both times. The mai tai I had was delicious and was a great welcome drink to Mexico. It was busy Saturday night during the fight but we were still able to sit comfortably and see the TVs. Service can be kind of slow when it's busy like that but when you look around to see how many people are there ordering drinks it's completely understandable. Our servers were always polite and attentive. Another thing I really liked was the variety of people that were there and we got to meet! People from all over the world and you just don't really get that in Arizona very much. We didn't try any of the food but would happily upon our return! read more
