Over the course of more than a month, I had to follow up multiple times after being told someone would get back to me and receiving no response. One of my primary questions involved how to properly calculate the amount of rent owed after a rent increase. I specifically asked whether the increased amount could be included or whether I needed to use the amount stated in the existing lease. A staff member told me she did not know and that an attorney would get back to me. No one did, and I had to follow up again. I was also asked by staff to provide banking information, including an account number, without a clear explanation of why it was needed. When I asked for clarification, I made it clear that I was happy to provide whatever information the firm required--I simply wanted to understand what was being requested and why. Additionally the email provided incorrect dates and lacked professionalism. Unfortunately, my interactions with the associate attorney, Shekhar, were even more concerning. I found him confrontational, dismissive, and difficult to communicate with. When he told me the individual units at the property needed to be physically marked, I immediately agreed to do so. Because each unit has two entrances, I tried to ask which door should be marked to make service most effective. Rather than allowing me to fully explain the question, I felt repeatedly interrupted and the call was ultimately ended abruptly. I have managed rental property for approximately 15 years but have fortunately never had to complete an eviction, which is precisely why I hired an attorney. I expected to be able to ask questions about a legal process that was new to me without being made to feel that asking those questions was an inconvenience. I also worked as a civil litigation paralegal for nearly 20 years, so I have extensive experience interacting with attorneys and law firms. This was not the level of professionalism or client communication I am accustomed to. After my call with Shekhar I immediately contacted East Bay Rental Housing for referrals to another attorney because I was so uncomfortable with how my matter was being handled and how he rude he was. I had previously spoken with Mr. Horwitz and found him courteous and informative, so I was particularly disappointed by this experience with his staff and associate attorney.
