More like 3.5 Stars, but not 4-Stars…read more Being a native Japanese, I've tried several Japanese restaurants and local sushi places in Santiago. And ShooGun is probably the most authentic Japanese food you can find in Chile besides Kintaro near Centro. Unlike the new joints in more contemporary mood, such as Temple Lounge (@ Intercontinental) or Osaka (@ W Hotel), atmosphere is pretty straight forward, old-school Japanese sushi bar or Izakaya. So this place is more suitable for more corporate/business dinner. *Not recommended for those looking for a romantic dinner. Food quality is good. Santiago has a decent seafood, and this place does serve good sashimis. As for drinks, they have pretty limited selection of Japanese beer/sake. You can still enjoy the domestic brands of beers/wines. Price setting is quite high probably due to its location, target, and hard-to-get ingredients. Because of the high price, the restaurant is usually not too busy. Most likely no need to make reservation.

This is one of those things.. Yes - it's probably the best Japanese food you'll find in Santiago…read more Is it good Japanese food? The fact that they restrict themselves to mainstream and locally available fish selection is probably a plus, since the fish is fresh and tasty, and the presentation is legitimate and tasteful - actual sushi, rather than the "Papa John's Sushi Dippin' Strips" obscenity that is most local sushi, so unreserved kudos for that most fundamental metric. Still, the menu is flat and touristy. I would put it on a par with what you would expect to find on the catwalks at Japantown in San Francisco - geared towards the ignorant and wide-eyed tourist. The place is dirty, with visible accumulations of grime in the screen-doors. There's lots of waiting, mistakes, contrition, explanations in place of decent service. We had to wait over 10m between the natto and the unagi that we ordered simultaneously to end our meal "because they got other customers"? Seriously? Ankimo, and even ahi are un-heard of. The food was not bad, the fish reasonably fresh, and as with the rest of Chile's Japanese offerings, asking for Nigori Sake just breaks the program - the concept of unfiltered sake is just sooo incomprehensible. For the stupidly high prices, it's a bit of an insult.

Great japanese peruvian fusion restaurant using the freshest ingredients…read more The decor is a mix of trendy and classical seating with large plush blue sofas. We had so many dishes including the arroz de mariscos, their version of paella, katsusando with wagyu steak and caramelized onions, pulpo, tori karage ( fried chicken), dumplings and camaron al pil pil. Everything was delicious and beautifully served. The server was really very helpful in our choices and they cleaned the table and changed the plates and silverware between each dish. The wine bottle ( Don Melchior) was one of the best in Chili and worth it. The only little annoyance was the loud music which did not fit this upscale restaurant . Maybe they pushed the trendiness factor a little too much. Otherwise, great restaurant.

It's located in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Santiago and features indoor as well as outdoor dining options. We chose to dine outside and take in the ambiance of the beautiful poolside views. Let me just say- this meal was stellar in every way possible. The waitstaff were very friendly and attentive. Everything on the menu sounded so good, so we asked for suggestions to help us narrow down what to order. Ultimately, they steered us in the right direction. Everything we ate was magnificent. I started my meal with a mocktail. This was the BEST mocktail I've ever had in my life. It was called "Corinthians" and consisted of Greek yogurt, Elderflower reduction, vanilla syrup and fresh lemon juice and zest. WOW! This was such a satisfying drink. The smooth creaminess was the perfect complement to the seafood dishes to come, and I still have yet to try another mocktail that even comes close to rivaling it. For an appetizer, we had the Sake Tartar. This dish was out of this world delicious and creatively combines two of my favorite foods- raw salmon and passion fruit. The dish consisted of a finely chopped salmon tartar with a really vibrant, creamy sauce with some zing or as they call it "leche de tigre", ikura, passion fruit gel and vegetable chips. I am in love with this dish and would rank it as one of the top 3 best things I've ever eaten. It was just so good! We were also served a complementary Amuse Bouche that was a Peruvian Vegetable and meat hor d'ouvere that was so delicious- It was earthy and the textures were delightful. It was like a miniature work of art that bursted with unique flavors. For an entree, I decided to try this fish burger which was a an in house made minced fish and ginger patty served on a brioche bun with all the fixings. It too, was incredibly delicious. Overall, I cannot say enough good things about Matsuri. Everything was perfect and I would come back in a heartbeat. The food, service and atmosphere were top notch. A MUST when visiting Santiago.
