The food is delicious, the management and staff are lovely people. I always dine out in the most luxurious hotel.

    Inch House - Side room

I had that in mind on a recent visit to the Nash 19 food shop and hit the jackpot with a cube of traditional pudding (€4.95) from Tipperary's Inch House (in association with Crowe's farm). The pudding does contain salt but not that you'd notice along with pinhead oatmeal and pearl rice. It has a really pleasant construction, feels and more importantly tastes good and indeed converted at least one previous black pudding hater of my acquaintance. It can of course form part of your traditional fry but my preferred plate, another old dish, is with good eggs (fried) and a well made mashed potato. Next on the agenda is the Trevor Thornton Chicken and Black pudding recipe available on the Bord Gas website http://www.bordgaisenergy.ie/publications/recipes/

The house is situated on several acres of land and cannot be seen from the main road. Upon driving down the gravel path, Inch House comes into view like the manors of old Ireland. There is plentiful parking which is good because the restaurant draws quite the crowd. We arrived during a wedding reception, but the amazing chef still prepared us an amazing meal. My wife got the cod and she said it was the best meal she had ever had. I had a steak with a peppercorn sauce to die for. Both were served with local vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes, and cooked whole potatoes. We also both got drinks from the amazing wooden bar. It is no surprise that inch house has won countless awards for their food. The common rooms have high ceiling with crown molding, designs on the ceiling and painting. We ate our meal in one such room next to a roaring fire field by peat (turf) bricks like in days ago. After eating, we walked up the beautiful double staircase to our room situated at the center of the house. The bed was a giant king that ensured that we almost slept past breakfast every day. There was built in seating in the massive windows that was perfect for looking out on the fields with crops that rippled in the wind. The proprietors, John and Nora Egan, are very easy going and accommodating. I was in town to meet relatives and they ensured that I was able to meet them by coordinating phone calls. A lot of inch house's charm and character comes from their family photos which are displayed thought the lobby and stairwell in the spaces not taken up by awards. My gran aunt stayed at Inch house when she visited Ireland decades ago and I hope to stay there again the next time I visit Ireland.

I have to admit that a little bit of the five stars I'm going to give Bridge View B&B is because I was somewhat of a rude guest, in that I arrived over an hour late after getting side tracked driving across Ireland then having my rental car locked in the parking deck across from Smithwick's Brewery (that one closes at 6PM - the 11PM one is up the street). Despite all of this, our hostess Eimear accommodated our tardiness and was very pleasant throughout the whole experience. That's reason enough to book this homey B&B, with the comfortable rooms and ideal location (along with metered parking nearby). The B&B sits right on the River Nore minutes away from a very convenient pedestrian bridge to downtown Kilkenny. The rooms are modest, with comfortable double beds and private bathrooms. The breakfast is delicious and made to order from the menu at the tables. Very much a mom and pop vibe, as Eimear made our breakfast (her husband is a musician we heard play at the Kyteler's Inn the night before - a small world indeed). The place is cash only, so be sure to have enough for your stay - if not, there are ATMs across the aforementioned pedestrian bridge. Overall, when I come back to Kilkenny I'm coming back to Bridge View B&B, and I promise this time not to be so late.

Nice B&B with reasonable rates. Rooms were comfortable. Location was awesome, right by the river…read moreand off the main street from where the pubs are.

If you don't want the full Irish (which i must say is good as they serve mushrooms, potatoes, bacon etc) there is not much other choice. I love fruit for my breakfast and bowls of tinned fruit is a poor substitute. The fruit salad only had apples, mandarin and a few bits of melon in it which is had to pick out. So i had to fill up on hot breakfast stuff and coffee. As i don't eat much in the way of bread that was ok but for my children they were disappointed not to find any pastries. The location of the hotel is just off the M8 but really there is no-where else in the little town/village other than a shop to see. Thurles is about 10 minutes drive away which is one of those grid-locked towns which should have a by-pass so that people visiting the town are not stuck in lines and lines of traffic. The evening meals in the hotel are rather expensive and without any neighbouring rivals they can be as there is not even a take-away near by that i could see. But the food we did eat was lovely, my daughter had a steak from the kids menu which was really nice. The chicken wings though were SPICY, so much so they could only be eaten with a side order of a jug of water! The pool is nice enough and the staff were very friendly, they even gave us swimming hats! Sadly i did'nt get a chance to use the gym as i had two kids with me but it looked quite good for a hotel gym. The staff on checkout were helpful, one of them kindly rang a couple of petfarms to see if they were open. They did have free wi-fi but it kept going off on me and was only really good in the bar area.
