If you don't want the full Irish (which i must say is good as they serve mushrooms, potatoes, bacon etc) there is not much other choice. I love fruit for my breakfast and bowls of tinned fruit is a poor substitute. The fruit salad only had apples, mandarin and a few bits of melon in it which is had to pick out. So i had to fill up on hot breakfast stuff and coffee. As i don't eat much in the way of bread that was ok but for my children they were disappointed not to find any pastries. The location of the hotel is just off the M8 but really there is no-where else in the little town/village other than a shop to see. Thurles is about 10 minutes drive away which is one of those grid-locked towns which should have a by-pass so that people visiting the town are not stuck in lines and lines of traffic. The evening meals in the hotel are rather expensive and without any neighbouring rivals they can be as there is not even a take-away near by that i could see. But the food we did eat was lovely, my daughter had a steak from the kids menu which was really nice. The chicken wings though were SPICY, so much so they could only be eaten with a side order of a jug of water! The pool is nice enough and the staff were very friendly, they even gave us swimming hats! Sadly i did'nt get a chance to use the gym as i had two kids with me but it looked quite good for a hotel gym. The staff on checkout were helpful, one of them kindly rang a couple of petfarms to see if they were open. They did have free wi-fi but it kept going off on me and was only really good in the bar area.

The bar served quite nice food and although i didn't order any my sister ordered a set menu and chose Bbq chicken wings which were enough to feed half her family and Chicken curry and rice which came with chips and again were enjoyed by all! The bedrooms i thought a bit dated albeit quite large and comfortable. The tv remote control was broken with batteries hanging out and no back so everytime i had to change the channel i had to search through the bedsheets. The beds were comfortable although the mattresses were a bit sunken. Probably by all the guests that lay in them. The cost for the night was €89 for the room for myself and my two children one of which was a teenager and breakfast was included. Breakfast was adequate and staff again were polite, helpful and when i asked for poached eggs i got them quickly and just the way i wanted them. The only negative about the breakfast was that there was not a great choice in pastries or healthy options such as fruit and yogurts but the full Irish was ok. When we asked at 9.30 if there were any more pastries we were told there were none. All in all it was a nice hotel if not a bit lacking in the little extras. Carlow town is not far from the hotel on the Portlaois road and if you drive about 10 minutes you will find the Brownhill Dolmen which has been around for 4000 years.

The price was reasonable, the pool was clean and gym looked it too! The location of the hotel is good if you are just there for a stop off, it is beside a shopping area. It's a bit outside the town for a social drinking kind of night. The food was fabulous, i ordered a set menu, in which fed me and half my family, which was good value. The bed was comfortable and huge...room was clean. To be honest couldn't really ask for much more! Free WiFi for guests....added bonus!

Avoid This Hotel - Dirty Rooms,no room noise instillation, and Shockingly Aggressive Staff!…read more I stayed at the Templemore Arms Hotel for one night, and it was one of the worst hotel experiences I've had in a long time. The room was in poor condition--there were black stains on the bed sheets, and the walls were paper-thin. I could hear every movement from the room next door, with noise so loud and constant that I could feel the vibrations through the wall. It's clear the building is extremely dated and completely lacks proper soundproofing. I called reception at 1:00 a.m. asking them to speak to the guests next door. The noise continued for another hour and a half. I called again, only to be told the receptionist knocked on their door but got no answer. At no point did staff take real action to ensure guests could actually sleep--which is the bare minimum any 3+ star hotel should provide. The worst part came the next morning. When I explained the situation to the receptionist, Fiona, she instantly became defensive, argumentative, and downright rude. I calmly asked for compensation, and she responded with aggression and insult. This is not just bad service--it's horrible aggression towards guests! I then asked to speak to the manager, Catherine, who was more composed but dismissive. She refused to offer any resolution or apology and bizarrely claimed she had "never received a noise complaint in 50 years." And "we had no other noise complaints from other rooms" implying that I called reception twice at 1am and 2am for no reason?? When I said I would be leaving a review, her response was a sarcastic, "Oh, and we will respond." Not a single apology. No accountability. Just arrogant staff with extremely poor, defensive attitude. This hotel has serious problems--not just with the quality of the rooms, but with a rude, aggressive, defensive and outdated customer service culture that clearly sees complaints as a nuisance rather than an opportunity to improve. If you're looking for a clean, quiet, and respectful hotel to stay, avoid the Templemore Arms Hotel at all costs and stay in a B and B instead! You will get more sleep and the walls will be not as thin as paper!

In the last few years I've been here now four times for events with three overnight stays…read more It's a lovely hotel with friendly staff and very good service. They always managed well to cater for the events that were big enough. The restaurant (The Fitzmaurice) is very good. Seeing that I was there for big events (300ish people) I was very impressed how they managed to organise and serve dinner and lunch and very good quality. Breakfast is Full Irish (self-service) with everything you can expect (fried egg, scambled eggs, mushrooms, tomato, black and white pudding, baked beans and hash) or you can get continental breakfast. The conference room and the surrounding facilities are friendly and comfortable. And free wi-fi is always nice to have these days. I didn't get to try their spa yet. Only three stars might be a bit mean. But I twice got a room that wasn't up to standard. Once (two years ago) is was a very small one and not very inviting - this obviously might have change by now. This time I was on the third floor in a lovely room to the back. Luckily I couldn't hear the trains on the rails just behind the hotel. But I got the impression this floor doesn't get used a lot (which is fair enogh in these times). The locker in the room didn't work. I suppose the batteries had dies. I mentioned it at reception. I didn't make it urgent so I wasn't surprised when that wasn't fixed by the time I left the next day but somehow I still kindo expected it. The heating wasn't on at all on the third floor it seems. Which I first thought is nice as I hate overheated rooms. But it got quite chilly during the night. Luckily I found a blanket in the wardrobe. And when I wanted to have a shower the next morning I absolutely couldn't switch it on. And I consider myself strong.

In the last two years, it has come under new ownership which is on-site. The staff are over-the top friendly and attentive, and often surprise me by remembering me by name. It's very clean and the rooms are incredible. We got a junior suite which had a living room, two bathrooms and a bedroom. A welcome brownie and berries were a nice surprise in our room upon our arrival. I have only had a pedicure at the spa, but plan on going back next trip. Would absolutely return.
