From the first moment I spoke to her 5 years ago, about attending High Holiday Services her warm, authentic, inviting personality made me feel comfortable and inclusive. She welcomed me with open arms and an open heart! I would definitely recommend you join us. You won't be disappointed! Grateful member. Doris A.B.

In our historic landmark building filled with show business history, we provide community and self-expression, spiritual growth, deeds of loving kindness and caring. Everyone is welcome in our house of God. We are post-denominational, looking for fresh approaches to enliven worship while maintaining a connection to our Jewish roots. Talent from vaudeville, cabaret, nightclubs, television, and Broadway made the synagogue a true Actors’ Temple. Famous members and congregants included Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson, Edward G. Robinson, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Henny Youngman, Eddie Cantor, Shelley Winters, and countless other lesser-known actors, comedians, singers, playwrights, composers, musicians, writers, dancers, theatrical agents, and sports figures worshipped there. Off Broadway plays are now performed at our Actors’ Temple Theater, as well as dance, music, and religious events and celebrations. We provide space for Community groups to share our facility, being of service to our neighborhood. Our small, warm community welcomes all people who are searching for a deepened relationship to God and Judaism, for self-expression, learning, service, and friendship. In our house of God, all people are included and appreciated.

I had went here to see an event "Inside the Mind" of Darren Star in conversation with Lorne Bycoff…read more The moderator was great there was an Q&A which I didn't know nothing about. Whenever, there was a question that Darren didn't hear clearly then Lorne had repeated the question to him. The carpet was red, but the isles had tiles. And where I was sitting there was a high wood, I'm assuming to keep the tiles secure, so I was telling people to watch their step since I had to get up since I like to sit on the end. Before, I had walked in there was a guy in a suit that was giving me a dirty look, hell when I walked in the rest of the security team had a grimace face towards the patrons. I know that this is a synagogue, but they look like they were going to take me out. I use to work as an Usher for many high profile events where celebrities and politicians would have their own security team, they were way more friendly. The Ushers were great and they looked people up on the tablets, no more paper and clip boards I guess. Some of the ushers wore black t-shirts of the with the place name. At the end they were giving out candy M&M's then when I came out of the bathroom, I said I had already gotten one and the woman said unlimited candy, so I took two more. The bathroom was on impeccable clean before and after the event. The one thing that I hate they didn't have seat covers in the bathroom. Would I go here again? Heck yeah, the Ushers put it over the top with their hospitality. I had also gotten an email that late entry wouldn't be permitted once program had started. And no large bags were permitted either. I had found this to helpful since I generally carry large tote bags, so I can bring a smaller bag.

I sent my dad here while on a trip to NYC as it was the closest conservative (actually it's…read moreorthodox) synagogue to the hotel we were staying at. He went for services on Saturday morning, and said there were tons of people there and he was very impressed generally. They noticed that he was new and invited him to roll up the torah, which was cool of them if you ask me. He also reported that the kiddush was the biggest he's ever seen and the cholent was a lot like his grandmother used to make. Overall, the most glowing report about a synagogue my dad's ever given. So, if you're in the area, go. Also, they have an emeritus rabbi who was ordained in 1935 and still attends services regularly. Pretty cool.

This is just the best shul in town. Murray Hill/Gramercy/Kips Bay is home toJews from all around…read morethe world. The diversity of congregants and heimish style services really makes this a prime choice if you are hunting for the right shul. Sometimes it is packed, sometimes it is small and cozy. But one thing is always constant--great spiritual services and a great kiddush to socialize and mingle with fellow Jews. Scotches, bourbons, chulent, kugels are some of the selections you will find on any given shabbat. The contrast of the old and new, Rabbi Kleiman and Rabbi Shloush, a 150 year old congregation and building, versus an energetic young professionals group called "The L'Chaim Club" just makes this place a must see. I highly reccomend stopping in either Friday night or Saturday day.

They host a cheese and wine Shabbat event for young professionals about once a month. It's a great idea to create a networking scene, so you could check it out if you want to meet people, although most of them are odd ducks. There were a few creeps who literally followed me throughout the event. A lot of them are established, interesting people, but the turnout is light. The crowd is typically the same peeps each time, so if you've gone once, I wouldn't feel the need to go again if the aim is to meet new people.
