The best mole I've ever had, very well worth finding the location. Service was perfect

We came as part of a tour after visiting the pyramids, so unfortunately we were on a pretty tight schedule. We arrived around 12 PM and were scheduled to be picked up at 2 PM. We communicated that to our server, but our food didn't arrive until around 1:30, which meant we basically had to inhale our meal before running back to meet our tour. I really wish we'd had more time to sit and enjoy everything. Now my one personal grievance: WHERE IS THE SPICY SALSA?! We're in Mexico, I need to feel something!! I asked our server why nothing was spicy, and he told me it was because of tourism. -.- I ended up paying extra for them to roast some peppers for me just so I could get some heat. Spice crisis aside, the food was delicious. I started with a bowl of consomé, which absolutely hit the spot after climbing the pyramids, and I had the mole verde for my main dish. My partner ordered the steak, and we both really enjoyed our meals. One thing to keep in mind is the pricing. It's definitely on the touristy side and closer to what you'd expect to pay at a restaurant in the U.S. You're paying for the setting and overall experience in addition to the food, so don't necessarily come expecting inexpensive Mexico prices. One of my favorite touches came at the end of the meal. They give you a candle to place among the rocks, representing a new beginning. I thought that was such a sweet and meaningful way to end the experience. Overall, the food was amazing and the space is genuinely gorgeous. I would recommend experiencing it at least once--just give yourself plenty of time, expect U.S.-ish pricing, and if you're a spicy girl like me, prepare yourself for the tourist-level salsa situation.

Beautiful Setting and that what only stars are for, but disappointing Food and Service…read more I was really excited to visit La Gruta, but the food and service were a major disappointment. The atmosphere is beautiful and truly unique. Each guest receives a candle to light near the stairs as a symbol of healing. There are also chefs preparing fresh tortillas in an open cooking area, they celebrate your birthday celebrations with lively songs and unique presentations. We ordered three dishes and 2 soups, and the vegetarian mixiote was a disaster. Other dishes were just ok. The vegetables were severely undercooked, the beans and corn, etc which tasted raw. The dish had no flavor or seasoning, and after just one spoonful, I felt stomach bloating. At 430 pesos for a dish consisting entirely of vegetables and corn and beans, I expected much better quality, preparation, and flavor. Our server and the manager had an attitude. When we raised our concerns, instead of acknowledging the issue or trying to find a solution, the manager argued that the food had been prepared for us and therefore we were expected to pay. Of course, we understand that food was prepared, but it's the restaurant's responsibility to serve properly cooked, enjoyable meals, especially at these prices. We visited on a Tuesday after the paraymid visit, and the restaurant was still quite busy, mainly with tourists. Our booking was a month in advance .

Everything was spotless, welcoming, and thoughtfully done. It's owned and run by a local husband-and-wife team, and that personal care makes all the difference. We truly felt at home. Ernesto was incredible--knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely invested in making sure our entire family had a great experience. I speak Spanish, but he is also fluent in English, which made everything seamless. The food? Outstanding. My kids ordered the chicken tacos and finished every single bite. I had the tortilla soup, which was easily one of the best I've ever had--rich, comforting, and full of flavor. I also ordered a custom chicken breast stuffed with huitlacoche, and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. If you're looking for authentic food, excellent service, and a place that actually cares, this is it. Don't fall for the hype of the overcrowded tourist spots--this restaurant is the real deal. Perfect for families and anyone who appreciates amazing food made with heart.
