A fun lunch spot to visit after walking around the ruins and pyramids of Teotihuacan. A group of us were excited to try this place given the location and recommendations. We didn't have reservations, but they are quick to accommodate and get you in. It's a bit of a walk down the stairs leading into the cave, but the descent is interesting. They have many servers available and QR code menus with free wifi available. They provide you with chips and two salsas while you wait for your food and drinks. Most servers speak English, which is needed for all the tourists that dine there. The drinks were delicious, pricey, and fun. I got the chapulín margarita, which reminded me of a Bloody Mary. You have to try it at least once. Although, I did like the other drinks more, such as the Jamaica Margarita. The food was tasty and well portioned. I recommend trying their underground oven meals like the birria de borrego (mutton) and mixiote. They give you fresh tortillas and more salsa to accompany the food with. Finally, the servers tell a folklore about the cave origins and give your party a candle to place on one of the cave walls. A really nice touch to the end of the meal. This is the place to check out when im Teotihuacan. You pay for the experience, but it is unforgettable. read more

I had breakfast today at La Gruta and had a horrifying experience. When you walk in you are greeted by the hostess that ask what you're dietary restrictions are. To which my tour guide and I let them know my partner is allergic to peanuts. We proceeded to order our food, I ordered as my partner does not speak Spanish. I requested chilaquiles for myself and he wanted an enchilada with mole. We were served our food I had the chilaquiles given to me and they placed the enchilada with mole for him. Once we're finishing our food my partner notices his stomach feels off and I noticed his lips started getting swollen. I saw he was feeling discomforted so he went to the restroom. During this I looked up the food just because I was wondering what was making him feel so odd and there it was mole contains peanuts. I couldn't find my server for 5-10 minutes so I asked a server near me and he confirmed the mole has peanuts. I quickly asked for the check because at this point I was panicking at how bad his reaction could be as he was in the restroom. All the servers told me were oh ya we don't have any medicine. The server that served us not once came up to us after this. I then approached the hostess and they confirmed they notified the server and he should have told us. That was the end of that, then I asked if they had anything because he was now vomiting his eyes were red and his throat was getting tight. A manager approached us with a medication that alleviated the allergy a little. He told us to hold on for 10 minutes to see if it helped. I waited he was still throwing up feeling nauseous etc so I went back and asked for the manager. I asked if they could AT LEAST refund his plate. This whole process took at least 45 minutes almost an hour. To which they kept saying we are working on it we'll let you know. Once they finally came to us they told me I only asked for the plate to be refunded. As mentioned above I told managers if they could AT LEAST. This is a matter of life or death, allergies are SERIOUS. I was shocked by how inhumane it was, they said they were following all procedures and were doing everything they could. I don't understand how we were not fully refunded. This is a beautiful restaurant and I was so excited to visit it being from a different country and I was shocked by how horrible this experience was truly traumatic. I was trying to make sure my partner was not having horrible symptoms all while fighting for a refund this seems absurd to me. We ate there at 10 AM today and it is now 3 PM. He still has symptoms, an allergy attack does not just go away and it's not anything light. Truly felt like a place where they do not value their customers. read more

VERY happy I came here. Have you ever eaten dinner in a cave?! Well, I have and if you eat here you can say that too. First, the atmosphere is gorgeous. Right behind the ruins, this restaurant paints a magical portrait of fine dining in a cave. Who would have thought? The food is very tasty here. I ordered the corn soup and it was prepared beautifully. They bring you the bowl with the fixings inside and then come pour the broth. It was so hot and yummy. I'd recommend going here for an upscale experience after visiting the ruins! Would do again. It's been cool to tell my friends back home that I had lunch in a cave. I am only giving this restaurant four stars because of the location, C'mon, it's in a cave underground!! And the novelty of it. I have never been in a place like this. However, service and food was a meh for me. It is busy, no question about it. It is one of the closest restaurants outside the Teotihuacan, and everyone wants to experience it, bit everywhere else I have been in Mexico so far, people are overly polite and attentive, not here. I think our waiter was somewhat inexperienced. He wasn't rude, just not attentive. I order their Mexican Platter. Which came with a tamal, a chicken taquillo, beef and mole pork I think it was. The only thing I liked about my dish was the tamal. Everything else was blah. Overhyped food. We did get guacamole with chicharrones, and that was excellent, we had guac for days. I had a margarita, which was meh, so I decided against dessert based on my food. I rather have the calories elsewhere. Prices are OK for the area. They could be much higher and people would pay. Decor, well, it's a cave... the coolest restaurant I have been in. A must if you visit the pyramids, just enjoy it for what it is, your palate won't be blown away. read more

Oh man, I don't even know how to describe my experience at La Gruta. First of all, after getting baked alive on top of the pyramid at Teotihuacan, it is definitely refreshing to hide away from the sun inside a cave. Yes! The restaurant is literally inside a cave! I mean, I would give this restaurant 5 stars just based on the fact that they are environmental and has a natural cooling system. La Gruta possibly has best dining ambiance I've had so far. Just the mere act of eating inside a cave made all the food taste so much better. It was definitely an eye-opening experience. To start off, we ordered a flat bread topped off with grasshoppers. Although I have ate some exotic food in East Asia, this was my first time trying out grasshoppers, so I was very excited. I enjoyed it quite well. The grasshoppers were crunchy and had a slight acidic taste to them. For the main course, I ordered a lamb soup and a rabbit mixiote with a bottle of wine because my friends and I like to be fancy. The soup was a little bit salty, but still tasted very flavorful. The cilantro kind of offset the saltiness of the soup, which was good. The rabbit mixiote was very tender and the meat just rips right off. It had a very nice texture. I do have to agree with my friends that most of the food was under-seasoned. However because I wasn't too particular about the seasoning, the food was actually quite up to my standard. Therefore the quality of the food here could vary depending on your taste buds. Even if you find the food not up to par to your expectation, you would have to agree that the service here is on point. After our meal, the servers gave us a survey to assess our opinion on the food. They were very concerned about the lack of seasoning in their food and provided us with a free dessert (a flan) to compensate for our experience. I find their service very receptive and couldn't be more satisfied about how they handled the situation. If you are at Teotihuacan, make sure you end your tour at La Gruta. Not only is this an enjoyable dining experience, you will get to eat some authentic Mexican dish. La Gruta would make your trip in Mexico all the more memorable. read more

The comments about La Gruta being a "tourist trap" must come from some American babies. Speak some decent Spanish, come with an appetite, and have a little patience. What a find. My cuz and his crazy wife took my +1 and I here for late lunch after visiting the nearby pyramids. Unique! The time I've ever eaten in a cavern or "grotto" as it translates. Ambiance is A-plus. Staff are attentive but service very slow. The menu features authentic local fare. Prices are reasonable. At meal's end, they give you a candle to take into the cave. CAUTION - DO NOT EAT HERE! I would give this place a negative star if I could! I ate here 3 days ago and spent the next two days in the hospital emergency due to food poisoning from this place. The hospital bill was nearly $7,000MXN!!! We ate lunch here and should've known better when we sat down and the plates on the table were dirty. The napkins were also dirty and looked almost unwashed. The food didn't taste that good either. There were things floating in my lemonade. I started feeling sick and bloated as soon as I finished my meal. Two hours later I started getting sick and wanted to vomit and had diarrhea. It only got worse from there. My symptoms were so severe I had to go to the hospital emergency, went through hours of IV and treatments. I ate nothing since the 24 hours I ate at this restaurant, and this place has ruined mexican food for me forever. They need to be held responsible! read more

Great place! I would highly recommend coming here after your tour of the pyramids. The place is beautiful and breathtaking. Service is great! The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because the food was just ok. We were a group of 9, so we tried different menu items plus appetizers and nothing was really great. A bit touristy, particularly the native dances. But the food was high quality. Escamoles, the ants' eggs, are a great starter, and the barbacoa (photo) was really good. If you haven't tried these Mexican delicacies this place provides a good opportunity for trying them. read more

Past reviews are pretty accurate for this place. Ambiance and novelty of eating in a cave was amazing and something that you can't get easily, but the the service really does lack. My week in Mexico was filled with pleasant and overly attentive servers/attendants throughout my stay with the exception of this place. We came on a weekday and was not busy, so there wasn't an excuse for cold food and inattentiveness. Although the highest bill we had, food didn't live up to the price. By a series of funny accidents we ended up arriving at La Gruta [there is more than, they tell us this is the more traditional one]. We had spent the entire day traipsing up and down pyramids and arrived with a serious eye for food. Our party of eight all ordered a variety of dishes. Be prepared for large plates of food! The mole was fantastic (and I usually don't like it). The molcajete was enough food for three in reality. All in all, this is a standout place to try regional foods made fresh and with great ingredients. We will definitely be back for more. Alright lemme start by saying this is one of the worst places I've been to with the WORST service on earth. Of course it's a tourist trap so people might find this to be super cool, but it's disappointing. We were excited to try this place it since it had great reviews. We spent the whole morning/afternoon at the ruins and were hungry. My brother who is studying in Mexico City wanted to take my family here. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table. Not bad of a wait considering how busy it is. We were seated and the waiter took our orders about 15 minutes after. We ordered 6 big plates and beers. My brother and sister got their food first but no drinks? Doesn't really make that much sense but okay. Our beers showed up. I got my soup 30 minutes into having ordered. They didn't bring me a spoon... they finally brought it back when my soup was cold so I had been waiting a while. 30 minutes pass and still no sign of our other 4 plates but the waiter brings out another spoon and I was like "what's this for?" And he says "your soup." I had to state that I had just gotten my soup half an hour before... now an hour has passed and no food. The waiter didn't check on us at all and we were upset at this point. We went after another waiter and asked for our food. He gave my dad a free beer for the delay and said the food was coming. Then another server brings me a third spoon and I'm like "I got my soup an hour ago..." well now were into an hour and a half and we finally flagged down the manager named Daniela. She went to go check on our food and she said they didn't start yet. Like what kinda service is this that our food that we ordered an hour and a half ago hasn't been started and 2 people of our party ate??? We had them check 3 different times and they said it was coming soon. WHAT A LIE. So now we are pretty angry and at our 2 hour mark and we wave down the manager again. My dad said "has the order been started? If not we wanna cancel." This lady had the audacity to tell us that our order HASNT STARTED YET! Like really? In two hours you told us 4 times our food was coming, you gave me three spoons for one soup???? My dad asked if there was anything they could give us and she said "free coffee." Heck no, a free coffee was not worth the grief, lack of food, and piss poor service. We had to pay the bill, didn't get an apology, and left hungry. Worst place I've ever been to. What a shame because the food seems like it had potential but we would never know since we never got it. When we got it we cut it up and split it up between my girlfriend and I. When we started to eat it it was COLD. We asked the server if we could order something else the server went to the manager and he came and looked at us like we were stupid said there's nothing we can do you ate all the food the meat is missing and THE FOOD WAS ALL THERE on 2 separate plates. Which we gave him both. He looked down on us and looked at us again and said what do you want me to do you are most of it. We took TWO bites. THEY TOOK THE PLATES and said we still had to pay for it. We ordered nothing else. The amount of disrespect and repulsively rude customer service literally had us appalled. EDUARDO is the rudest head server and gives this place a bad name.
