But, the furniture they sell is hand-made, solid and - unlike Amish or Mennonite furniture - isn't stuck in that timewarp/country style. There is some pretty cool stuff in there, and it isn't all rickety like the furniture our Swedish friends sell. Beyond furniture, D. Grandeur also sells wall-hanging carvings and decorative masks. The masks are very interesting - but I find masks in general a little disconcerting! You can also find that wooden carved American bald eagle statue you have been looking for.

There is a lot going on at Maker Space North. There are all sorts of different small businesses…read moreworking out of the main building and event within the Maker Space as well. Also, the main large space can be rented for different events such as craft fairs and other trade show events. I attended and participated (with Yelp) in one such craft show, and was really impressed by the turn-out at this location, even though the main doors have an unusual entrance situation. They do well to make the most of the space, but warning, it gets HOT in this space in the summer. It's also conveniently located in the same space as the Art-Is-In bakery, so certainly worth checking out next time you are grabbing some yummy baked goodies.

It is beautifully decorated on the inside, as well, with wide halways, granite walls, and art works on display. I have been to this building for many a special occasion, from courses in their training facilities upstairs, to dinner at the Baton Rouge, and coffee at the Starbucks - all attached to and easily accessible from inside this building. It's massive, covering an entire city block from Lyon to Kent Streets. They offer a fitness centre, and I believe there is also a daycare in here too. Also offered is underground parking, where you can park for free after 5:00pm when you go to the Baton Rouge. I am sure I will be back there.

However, since most of the shops and restaurants have exterior entrances AND several of the offices are in operation beyond 6pm and on weekends so if you are working outside of regular business hours, come break time there is absolutely nowhere to grab a bite because this beautiful building trust takes up an entire city block just shuts down. Meaning one would have to travel at least a block in any direction to find some food. Quite frustrating that the building's services don't fully support those working within.

Within the Arts Court "complex" there is Saw Gallery, video and Club, The Ottawa Art Gallery, the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, Le Groupe Dance Lab. Entrance is pay what you can, though I did not see where to put my donation! I really enjoyed browsing around, as the gallery was literally empty except for my friend and I, so we could see things at our own pace. It's great to have works by such different artists all in one place. It would have been nice to have some help finding the different galleries though, there were not many staff people around to give directions or answer questions about the exhibits.

From the Ottawa Art Gallery, to the Theatre, Club Saw/Saw Gallery/SAW video to Ottawa Dance Directive - there is always something happening here. Most of the activities in Arts Court are free, fundraising or at very low cost and the programming benefits a wide audience. The down side is that the listings aren't grouped anywhere together, outside of the Artlist (Artengine's e-blasts). In addition, the old Courthouse's layout is a real maze to navigate and unfortunately, some people get lost, give up and get out before they've discovered something exciting or found what they've come to see in the first place.

We were greeted as soon as we entered this gallery, but given space to look…read more There were several cards and pamphlets available upon entering the gallery for information on the current artists and on the gallery itself. I liked that there was a bench in front of a couple of the bigger paintings for more relaxed viewing and it reminded me of some of the larger galleries I have been to. Some of my favorite pieces were a huge flower and some kind of splattered paintings with numbers and symbols as well a colourful areas. Art was hung on the walls, as well as leaning in other areas, giving the gallery a more relaxed feel.

I love this gallery especially since they have jewelry from my favorite artist Anne-Marie Chagnon…read more Her jewelry is amazing since it gives you the power to change it. Maybe from a long necklace to a short one, or by reshaping a part. I went with a friend and she noticed pieces by a couple of her previous art teachers here and was excited. The highlight for me was definitely the jewelry. There were some really large striking pieces that would be totally unique to wear to an event. Of course they are a bit pricey, but it's art. The woman working in the store was really helpful and gave us a lot of additional information on the jewelry and how it could be changed, about the artists etc. She noticed my earrings and that they were by one of the artists also. This is one place I will visit soon when I have a special event to find accesories for!

Haven Books is essential for Carleton students. They have coursepacks, textbooks, and other books…read morefor your classes, all organized by course code. Some course material is even ONLY available at Haven. It's only a block away from campus and you can just walk up Sunnyside to get there. Students can sell their books, and it's much cheaper to buy ones that are used (if they're being used again for that course/semester/school year). The main problem is that because so many students need to buy books there, it's far too small to accommodate everyone, and you usually need to wait in a long, long, almost never-ending line at the beginning of every semester. It also doesn't have air-conditioning, which wouldn't be a problem, except when the space is so limited that you're usually back-to-back and shoulder-to-shoulder with other students and it can get really hot and humid.
