It's massive and engaging exhibition of nations and their artists. One artist per pavilion makes it an extraordinary high risk bet for drawing crowds over a period of some months but it works. What can o add to what everyone knows is the event for art way beyond any other except the Paris one... I'll be back and spend more time like two weeks!

Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca d'Oro was a great beginner's introduction to the island's many art galleries and museums. The museum is just the right size (housed in an old palace, just a few floors) and is not crowded. You basically get the whole museum to yourself and its a nice contrast to the busyness of Piazza San Marco. The art is so so but the building is what truly shines here. The Bon family designed the palace. If that family name makes no sense to you at all, just know that they also designed Doge's Palace! The courtyard is a beautiful space and is made up of the most amazing tile work. Also nice is the balcony and area where your boat would pull up from the canal. Just imagine what that would be like if it were back in the day. Not much has changed in terms of the structure and it is easy to picture what life was like in this palace.

The Palazzo Ducale also known as Doge's Palace is a must visit while in Venice. It's located in the…read morefamous St Marks square right next to St Mark's Basilica. It got its name from the Duke or ruler of Venice. Inside you will see high gold ceilings, an old armory that stored historic weapons, prison cells where you can look out a tiny hole to the Bridge of Sighs. We booked our tour here with Get Your Guide which included a tour of St Marks Basilica. Expect to spend at least a couple of hours here. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes since you will be doing a lot of walking in and around the grounds. Our tour guide spoke English the entire time which was helpful so we got to learn the history and feel first hand of the prisoners here. It was first built in the 14th century and then rebuilt to make it more grander each time.

The Duke was the highest governing position in Venice, and this is once where they lived. While strolling St. Mark's Square I already admired the beauty of the building. The building has gothic architecture with influences from the Byzantine times, Islamic and European Medieval styles. My camera does not do its' beauty justice. The tickets to Doge's Palace are time entry tickets, but they didn't seem to be too strict compared to other museums. Tickets are 37€/person. There is a baggage check in area for large items like a backpack, at no cost. It's nice because my boyfriend and I left our stuff there, even things that weren't required to be checked so we walked around more lightly. I only kept my phone for photos. One of the first things I remember seeing is the snitch mailbox. In the olden days the citizens were encouraged to rat on one another and they can leave anonymous tips for the government here. Unfortunately as a result many were wrongfully imprisoned... and there is a full on prison in the later ends of the tour. It was really scary to walk through. On a more positive note, there had the most stunning golden staircase and one of the most incredible largest paintings in the world, the Il Parasido by Jacopo Tintoretto. A must visit when visiting Venice!

I recommend this organization…read moreand here's what you should know if interested in attending a performance : you must make an advanced reservation as they will be booked if you just try to walk in . If you reserve directly through the Musica a Palazzo website you will not pay online but will pay upon arriving. They accept cash only at this time . Once you arrive and pay, expect to spend a couple minutes filling out their required membership form (everyone who attends must fill out this form since they are a cultural association they say membership is required). Seating is open meaning there are no assigned seats. You will be moving rooms a few times and switching seats. There is an intermission and you will be offered a complimentary drink of Prosecco . The host also made me a Bellini and I saw he had orange juice so it appeared he could also make a mimosa. They offered non alcoholic drinks like water and coke as well. Very important, if you do not know the language and are not familiar with the particular opera, read up on it . The music and voices are wonderful but you will be less likely to appreciate it if you have no clue what's happening. I actually had Wikipedia pulled up on my phone which gave a brief overview of what was happening. You can purchase the English version libretto before the opera begins however I found the detailed explanations to be too long to follow during the actual opera. There are no photos allowed during the performance and you definitely do not want to be that person whose phone rings so make sure to turn it off before the opera begins. Most important, enjoy this intimate setting inside an old palace and amazing voices you will not soon forget!

Basilica di San Marco or the St. Mark's Basilica is dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of the…read morecity and a house for his relics. This is without a doubt the most important religious site in the city of Venice. At the time of our visit, there was construction on front of the building, but it was still beautiful. It is a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture with Gothic influences. There was so much incredible detail that went into every inch of the building. I did not get to go inside but the outside was already impressive. A great spot for photos.
