FOOD: We had come here on a Friday afternoon at around 12:00 pm, which was prime-time for Afternoon Tea. Since my mother was interested in a Gluten-Free Option, she had her meal pre-ordered therefore, the only thing that my mother had to order in the tea room itself was the type of jam and tea that she had wanted (she had settled on Raspberry Jam and Pecan Pie Tea). For my meal, I had decided on the White House Tea, along with the Strawberry Jam, and the Royal Wedding Blend. I found that the Royal Wedding Blend was a nice medley of apple, hazelnut, and flowers, which was delicious when paired with a few squares of sugar. My mother's tea, which was the Pecan Pie, tasted exactly like a pecan pie, which was a bonus, as I love pecan pie! I was impressed with how many loose-leaf teas were offered, with all of them being arranged behind the front counter. I also liked how there were many options for herbal and caffeine-free teas, as many tearooms often focus on caffeinated-teas instead. In terms of the Scones, I really enjoyed how delicious they tasted; they were quite large, and the Clotted Cream and Jam that accompanied them were a large quantity. I also enjoyed how the Clotted Cream was smooth enough to spread, which is often difficult to find (most of the Clotted Creams are clumpy, making them hard to spread without ripping the Scone). I was impressed that the Scones were warmed-up, which made them taste even better, and there were two of them for each guest, which was a huge bonus (most tea rooms that I've been to only serve one for each guest). I would love to have these Scones again, as they were definitely the highlight of the meal! In regards to the Tea Sandwiches, I had received two Cucumber With Cream Cheese, two Egg Salad, and one Open-Faced Salmon Mousse as part of my meal. I had never tried a Salmon Mousse Sandwich, and was easily impressed with how delicious it tasted, with the perfect amount of dill and other herbs, making it the best tea sandwich of the entire meal. The Cucumber With Cream Cheese was also delicious however, I felt that there weren't too many cucumbers inside of the sandwich, and the cream cheese was also sparse. The Egg Salad was delicious, and I felt that sandwich was filling enough, with the perfect amount of eggs and mayonnaise mixed-together to give it a fresh flavour. The last items were the Desserts, which I felt were a bit on the small side, although I did enjoy how beautiful they looked, along with how intricate the flavours were when mixed together. The Lavender Cookie was definitely something I had never tried before, and was impressed with how well it was prepared. I would have liked if the Desserts were larger, as I felt they were just too small, and one small gulp would be enough to finish one. I did appreciate though the effort that was put into making them, as it looked like they had been polished to perfection. Overall, I loved how much effort was put into making the food look and taste wonderful, with each item being attended to in a delicate manner. I also highly-enjoyed the large amount of loose-leaf teas available, which was a great bonus being such a tea lover! ATMOSPHERE: When I had first stepped-foot into this tearoom, I was impressed with how clean and fresh everything looked; all of the tablecloths, cups, saucers, and plates were white, boasting an airy lust of perfection and attentiveness. The tearoom itself was large, with enough room between tables, along with a large amount of décor on the walls, and on the window sills in-between the tables. I enjoyed how all of the loose-leaf tea was displayed in large tins, along with the other items for sale, such as teapots, cups, jewelry, and tea-related items for children. The smell was wonderful, as the scones were baking, and the various loose-leaf teas were simmering. I definitely felt that this tearoom had a classy and elegant feel to it, which made me feel comfortable during my entire stay. SERVICE: When we first entered the tearoom, we were greeted by a young woman, who allowed us to choose which table we would like. We then decided on a table near the window, which was a great spot for viewing (and keeping my son entertained as well). She also brought over a high-chair for my son after I had asked her for one, along with a teaspoon that we had needed for my son's food. Throughout the meal, she came over to ask how we were doing, along with another gentleman, who was clearing and setting tables. We felt as though the service was top-notch, as both the young woman, and the gentleman, were polite and friendly, making us enjoy our time even more. COST: 1 Garden Tea (Gluten-Free): $33.00 (Additional $7.00 For Gluten-Free) + 1 White House Tea: $30.00 = $63.00 + $8.19 (Tax) = $71.19 WOULD YOU RETURN? Most definitely; I really enjoyed the large tea selection, the delicious food (especially the Scones), and the attentive service. Would highly-recommend this tearoom to anyone who wants tea done right!

So I usually save those for special occasions. But when I'm craving an afternoon tea experience for no reason, then I look up places outside of Toronto. I've been to several now, they are usually more traditional and while not as fancy, also half the price of the locations in downtown Toronto. I saw lots of great reviews for the Escarpment Tea Room online (but not on Yelp). From the pictures I had an idea that this would be a very homey experience. And it is actually located in an old house, next to a legion-like venue. Unassuming, it wasn't too hard to find though. The place is pretty small and a bit crammed with seating for about 20 people. It felt like we were in someone's grandmother's house with British memorabilia and trinkets everywhere. But the owner is very sweet and chatted with us, giving us info on each of her teas which are a mix of bag and lose. To be honest, we found the teas themselves fairly average. What stood out for us was the food. The savory items came out first, followed by sweets. It is traditional and not an overwhelming amount, but almost everything is made in-house, using good quality ingredients including a salmon sandwich which was made with fresh salmon. The desserts were all thoughtful created, freshly made and really delicious as well. I was highly impressed considering the owner seemed to do almost everything herself. The place wasn't full, but I imagine she staggers her reservations so people aren't rushed. I recommend this place for those looking for a nice afternoon tea experience, but aren't as fussy about the tea itself.

When we had first sat down, we were told that all guests that were booked for that day were to receive the same type of lunch, which was the Informal Social Tea (Light), which came out to $19.95 per person. We were first given a plate of fruit, which included cut-up pears, cherries, and watermelon pieces. We did find the fruit to be very fresh, and enjoyed the presentation of it, which was nicely-situated on the small dish that was given to us. Next, we were given a dish of six scones, which we thought was quite generous as there were only two of us; a side dish included the devonshire cream and jam for the scones. We noticed that the scones were a bit hard, which tasted like they may have been left in the oven a bit too long as they were dark on the bottom. The taste of them was good though, they tasted fresh and appetizing, with sprinkled icing sugar on the top to sweeten the taste. Afterwards, we were given our tea, which was an oolong flavour, tasting absolutely divine! We loved how fresh the tea was, and how wonderful it went with our meal, such a great flavour. Along with the tea, we were given a small plate of strawberries for my little one that was with us, which we thought was such a nice thought from Judy (the owner). We also received a small dish of vegetables (cauliflower, pickles, carrots and peppers), which were based in a type of vinaigrette dressing. We weren't too keen on this option as we found it to be high on the vinegar-side, but appreciated the effort. The sandwiches were next, and were very appetizing to look at once they reached our table. We had three different types; one was egg salad on a yellow bread that was rolled into pinwheels, another was smoked-beef on toasted rye, and the last was a type of cold-cut with mustard on a rolled-up flatbread. In all honesty, all of the sandwiches were really well-done, with a lot of flavour in each of them. However, the best were the egg salad, which were perfectly rolled, with just the right amount of spice in them, and the smoked-beef on rye, which was grilled to perfection, and piping-hot (temperature-wise). We enjoyed the smoked-beef so much that we asked for more, and was willing to pay for them, but Judy gave them to us for free! Lastly, we received the plate of sweets, which included chocolate cupcakes, marzipan slices, cheesecake squares, ginger slices, and an almond cookie. Judy mentioned how each of these desserts were homemade, and it showed; they each tasted impeccable, boasting a savoury taste that stayed in our mouths long after we left. She was a wonderful baker, and we appreciated the efforts in her desserts! ATMOSPHERE: This tea room was situated on a quiet street in Paris, with ornate looking columns at the front of the home, and a historical feel that boasted a home from the Victorian-Era. We loved the little gate at the front of the home which welcomed us to the entrance, along with the picturesque landscaping in the front. The home itself was absolutely beautiful, with two large rooms at the front for diners, and a sunroom at the back overlooking the water, which is where we were situated. We loved the décor of the home, which had older pictures on the wall, and also the tables and chairs, which were cozy yet traditional. This truly felt like a home that was built in the Victorian-Era, which made us feel that we were dining at that time. It was also peaceful and quiet, which was what we were looking for when we attended. As we were seated near the kitchen, we did hear some extra noise from there however, not too much, only from time-to-time. SERVICE: We were served by Judy, who is the owner of the home and the tea room. She was wearing a beautiful costume reminiscent of the 1850s, which was a long skirt, long-sleeved blouse, and a wonderful brooch at the nape of her neck. We loved how her outfit made us feel even more like we were in the time-period mentioned. Judy was very attentive during our visit, even giving my son some toys to play with in-order to keep him occupied during our lunch. She came over to refill our teapots when needed, and even made us extra sandwiches without charging us. We loved how friendly she was, and would surely want to see her again. COST: Informal Social Tea (Light): $19.95/Each = $39.90 WOULD YOU RETURN? Without a doubt! We really enjoyed our time here, and felt that Judy pulled all of the stops to make sure we had a lunch we would never forget!

Fruit: The fruit was the best part of all our meals here. It was so fresh and sweet, which I thought would be difficult to find outside of California! I also enjoyed it with cottage cheese, which is not so common at breakfast spots in California unfortunately. Tea: The tea is enjoyable but pretty average when compared to bougier tea spots like The Bruce in Stratford. It's not clear how long I should let it steep for for optimal flavor. I preferred the Winter Dream green tea, which was warm and cozy, slightly sweet. I also preferred the McCrae over the Boathouse blend. The Boathouse blend was a little basic for me, and the McCrae had a slight sweetness that I enjoyed. High Tea: Average - a good price and pleasant experience, especially if the weather is nice enough to eat outside (and catch a bald eagle flying by!). My favorite dessert was the carrot cake cupcake. Ice Cream: Yes, ice cream and tea is definitely a good idea! The banana cream pie tastes like your classic Runts banana flavor (the original banana that got wiped out) and the black cherry has plenty of big cherry pieces.
