Curry Tonkatsu don General Tao's chicken Gyoza
    Hank L.

Tasty with a reasonable price in west Yellowstone. We arrived at around 8:30pm. We ordered curry tonkatsu don and General Tao's chicken. They were a little short of rice so they gave us some free gyozi.

This place is the best place in town to get boba. But for the last month, they've been out of watermelon, their cheapest and best flavor.

Our server was very friendly and conversational and recommended some of their best meals. We went with the elk ravioli and lasagna. The ravioli was good but the lasagna was very oily which was a bit off-putting. For dessert, we ordered the huckleberry cheesecake which was disappointing given that it was just a regular cheesecake with a little bit of huckleberry sauce on top.

First of all, we were thrilled to see it was open, as so many of West Yellowstone's restaurants had already closed for the season. It was a real neighborhood kind of a place, and by that I mean totally unpretentious and without any of the foo-foo fanciness that pops up in resort towns now and again. Their menu was solid -and concentrated on burgers, sandwiches, steaks, local elk, bison and walleye, and Italian Pasta with a "Montana Twist". More on that soon. We started off with a complimentary basket of house baked bread that was so good it just about disappeared in ten minutes. I felt like having a beer, so checked out their beer list of local beers before choosing a Halo Huckleberry Hefe ($6) by Lewis and Clark Brewing of Helena, Montana. Huckleberry is a local specialty, and nearly every gift shop sold jam, jelly, honey, and candies made from it. We both love Italian food, so we zeroed in on those Italian Pasta with a Montana Twist specialties. My wife chose the Bolognese ($23.99) for "Elk and bison meat sauce tossed with rigatoni pasta and topped with shaved Parmesan cheese." I went with the Meatballs ($24.99) for "Elk and bison meatballs tossed with bucatini pasta and house-made marinara sauce". Wowie... were both dishes great. The Elk and Bison tasted pretty close to beef, and I have to say my meatballs were excellent. I tried a bite of the Rigatoni Bolognese and it was also excellent. The house made marinara was a standout. Our server Emily was a charmer and really enhanced our dining experience. Simply put, we loved Bullwinkles and thought a $57 dinner with a drink and great food is a very solid value.

The squeeze and I shared the pulled pork samminch with onion rings on the side. It also comes with slaw. I ordered a cup of bison chili as well. The slaw was white cabbage that had a hint of horseradish bite. The chili was good, had a hint of heat. The pulled pork lacked its own flavor profile. The BBQ sauce made it enjoyable. The onion rings were okay. Pretty much a 3 star meal, but our server, Liliana (spelling) made it a 4. Fast service.

I saw hand cut fries on the menu and ordered those as a side. They brought an order to our table, but it was actually for another table, and I spied that the fries were prepared horribly. That dark brown color that comes from not knowing how to remove the excess starch, having the wrong fry oil temperature, etc., etc.. These were really really bad looking, brown fries. And so I quickly said "oh let me cancel my order of fries" ( because I knew I wouldn't be eating these) and they said "oh your fries are already in the fryer. We cannot cancel them"; so I said "OK. Fine bring them". And then I didn't touch them, but I just planned to pay for them. I'm going to show you photos from my home of the way I make fries. You see, I lived in Holland for several years and they take their potatoes very seriously over there and I became addicted to fries that were golden in color and not burned. So they sat uneaten. But when our real waitress came around to ask how everything was, I told her that the fries were burned and she kindly removed them and did not charge for them. So five stars for service. The chili was good. Profound cumin flavor. Several types of beans. But. If you don't like cumin, this is not for you. It's essentially a cumin stew.

We weren't super hungry - so opted to skip any sort of appetizer. I had the game bolognese (made with a mixture of meat) and it was truly just okay - definitely lacking for flavor and salt. We enjoyed them so much, we got some to go and take back over to our tent.

My family recently experienced both and I highly recommend both to anyone visiting Montana or traveling to see Yellowstone National Park. We stayed in a cabin for a week and enjoyed breakfasts and dinners many days at the restaurant. In regard to the restaurant, both breakfast and dinner served up delicious food with a good variety of options and local fare. My family particularly enjoyed their bolognese, salads, and burgers -- and we tried basically all of their appetizers and desserts at some point which were all beautiful and delicious! I landed on one particular dinner cocktail (setting up camp) because it was just that good, and they have mimosas available at breakfast time. The ambiance is beautiful, comfortable and has an upscale rustic lodge feel! In regard to the lodge and cabins, we had such a wonderful experience of these spaces! The accommodations were wonderful, and the GM and employees were absolutely lovely and helpful people! There are so many little details they attend to: 1. a quality complimentary beverage station available throughout the day with ice water, cider, hot cocoa, coffee and teas 2. Recommendations and help with setting up local outings like fly fishing, water rafting, horseback riding, etc. 3. Complimentary s'mores that you can roast at any of their many fire pits that they light every evening on property. The location is also perfect, just outside of the West Gate of Yellowstone and a day trip away from places like Jackson Hole, WY! Another plus is that they have rooms and cabins of different sizes, so very easy to find accommodations that fit for your family or travel group! We are excited to return to Bar N Ranch again in the future and I highly recommend it to anyone else below are just a few of the beautiful sights of the space!

Super casual counter service, with usual pub faves as well as some local flavors. We went with the: - hog wings - small but meaty, fried halfway to chicharrones with a Korean sweet sauce on the side, kinda salty even plain on its own - bison cheeseburger - solid burger, excellent and generous fries - brisket sandwich - generous portion of meat, kinda dry so I asked for more huckleberry bbq sauce on the side otherwise not very flavorful. Cole slaw was meh but I don't like Cole slaw (they wouldn't swap for anything else). Again excellent fries! Chased all this meaty salty heavy food with a local brew. Think $75 before tax/tip was pretty normal tourist prices - we were stuffed and didn't finish all the fries and buns.
