I've made a few trips to Penny, some just for coffee (takeaway and sit down) and a few with food…read more Across the board, Penny is outstanding in terms of Brisbane's cafe scene. The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

I've been wanting to try Bunker for the longest time, and today was the day. I love the vine covered hub, which reminds me of a burrow, and of a cafe that I used to visit back in L.A. Instead of getting my usual latte, I went for the bottled ice dark chocolate (5). I'm not the biggest fan of hot chocolate, as it's usually too sweet and heavy for me to finish (I know, strange, because I can finish a whole Chipotle burrito), but I decided that the unusually warm weather called for an iced chocolate. We were greeted by a really friendly barista who helped us right away - and well - the iced dark chocolate and dark chocolate mocha were pre-bottled, so there wasn't much work. The iced dark chocolate, made with organic milk (I think?) and fair trade chocolate, was quickly consumed! It wasn't too sweet, and I would definitely go for it again. The iced dark mocha was also really good, and not at all grainy, which often happens in a lot of mochas. My only complaint was that the bottles were a bit harder to open (I prefer Bean's bottles), and the straws were too short and kept falling in! The drinks were so delicious it didin't matter though....

Sitting against the cool brick wall sipping an ice coffee, flat white or hot chocolate you feel a million miles away from the city despite the fact Milton train station is above you. In the same way Blackstar Coffee paved the way for coffee appreciation in Brisbane many years ago, Bunker continues the tradition introducing and encouraging a new set of palettes to appreciate and respect good coffee. They also offer take-home coffee beans which they will grind for you depending on what device you'll be using them in.

What stood out to me first were their novel stools and chairs, along with the large mural and overhead lightbulb lamps, all of which came together to give the cafe an industrial meets earthy ambience. Oh, and I especially liked their table numbers that are set on a large wooden spool with thread! The menu was neatly chalked on the board behind counter, where a flamboyant neon lime green espresso machine sits next to jars of baked goods. I do quite like the unexpected hints of pop art around the cafe juxtaposed with everything else wooden - it just seems to really work! Well anyway, I wanted to just take snaps of everything, but onto what we had... The Salmon Dance ($13) was not bad, and the Kerfuffle also looked delicious. The iced coffee ($5.5) was awesome, as it was a hot day, and the British Ploughmans was pretty intense. it was pretty much a platter of wine food - cheeses, pearl onions, Granny smith apples, and a meat pie served cold. Everything was good, and the service was really good!

But this little predicament led me to Bean on Dean since they open at 6:30 when few other breakfast options in Toowong are. I almost turned on my heals and walked out on principle aline when I saw a pre-made bacon and egg sandwich was $12 but the fact the serve Campos coffee got me to reconsider. I decided on the Kerfuffle almost just for the name but since it contained some of my favorite things- avocado, feta and sourdough I knew it couldn't be a miss. The munchkin and I enjoyed our breakfast at one of the inside tables and got to watch the staff at work. They seem to have a pretty good system and gave quite a few regular customers- probably due to the residential setting. As a recent import to Brisbane I feel like I'm not always in the "cool" loop. After stumbling upon Bean in Dean I think I might be able to surprise some if my fellow Brisbanites with a fun alternative for a caffeine fix in Toowong. Bottom line: Small menu, good food/drink but pricey

There's just that kind of vibe here." And she's right. The two mornings I've been to Nowhere this week have been broken up by locals dropping in and out being spoken to by name and hearing updates of their lives, their children and more. It's a very similar vibe to when you visit Antonia and Brad at PUK Espresso in Kangaroo Point. It's this that makes your Mambo coffee that much sweeter. They're still waiting on a food licence, so for now, it is a selection of cakes and some sandwiches. There's complimentary Wi-Fi too and a kitchen table in the shop next door perfect for a work session surrounded by beautiful things.
