The first dentist I tried insisted that I needed, literally, many thousands of dollars' worth of work to correct "severe periodontal disease" and numerous "serious" cracks in my teeth that would have to be repaired with crowns and other violently expensive measures. This was news to me. My Chicago dentist had done a crown for a tooth that was seriously cracked but never mentioned any others that needed that kind of work. When I said that my previous dentist had also never mentioned any level of gum disease, let alone "severe," the dentist and hygienist both smirked and rolled their eyes and said that maybe she just hadn't noticed. Right. Way to gain the trust of a new patient: Insult her previous dentist, whom she liked enough that she stayed with her for 20 years. Second dentist I tried was like a factory. Very efficient, very cold. I didn't like it at all. And then I found Dr. Cole and his wonderful hygienist, Linda. Both of them said that my gums were very healthy and in great shape, and after X-rays and a thorough exam, Dr. Cole did not recommend any kind of extensive work. I asked specifically about a crack in a front tooth that the first dentist I tried had insisted was dangerous and needed to be addressed immediately to save the tooth. Dr. Cole said the crack was a shallow surface crack and could be fixed for cosmetic reasons if I wanted. Otherwise, I could just leave it as it is. Everyone in the office was extremely friendly and helpful. They took their time talking to me and answering my questions, and they didn't try to make me hand over my life savings for dental work I didn't need. Excellent! Finally, I have a dentist I trust and like. PLEASE NOTE: Dr. Cole is in a beautiful new office at a new location, not far from the old office: 1974 North Huron, right across the street from the big white EMU bubble.

Well, this dental emergency turned into a true blessing in disguise…read more I chipped my front tooth the other day and was pretty freaked because I don't have dental insurance, and I'm not familiar with this area. So, I looked on Yelp and found this dentist with a high score, and happened to be one of the few offices open to answer my call on that day. They were very helpful and friendly right off, on the phone, but I was still contemplating skipping a visit, just because I was afraid it would cost a lot. But I decided to go to make sure there were no cracks, and since it was in the front I didn't want it to look bad. I'm so, so glad that I went. The intake people treat you like family, literally. I never knew what that phrase meant until I met these people. It feels like they are just picking up on a conversation they had with you previously.... they are completely comfortable with patients (strangers.) Right away they treat you like they are going to know you forever. Dr. Cole fixed my chipped tooth without a filling or anesthetic in only a few minutes with no pain or discomfort at all. Then he checked all my teeth and told me everything going on with them, which was great. He could tell right away how much I floss. It's nice to hear there is a pay off for all that flossing. The best part was completely unexpected, though... two things: 1. He smoothed out that chip in a way that makes my teeth actually look straighter. They look way better than they did before I chipped one. It looks like I got braces or something. Five minutes of work, and my teeth look straight. That is crazy! 2. Because of the minimal amount of time and work; the minor damage to my tooth, and since I had no insurance, he charged me hardly anything! It ended up costing less than dinner at Casey's. That's crazy! Anyway, you get the picture that this was the best visit that anyone could ever have to the dentist. If I ever move out of Ann Arbor I'm coming back here for dental work.

DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST!…read more This review will be a bit long, but I think it's important to give context to my experience at this dental office. The long and short of it is: they are unethical and will tell you that you need work done when you don't. I am posting this just two days after seeing a different dentist: I wanted to post this last year after my appointment at Select Dental, but I believe in getting all my facts straight. So, let's get into this long tale. My husband found Select Dental online and saw generally favorable reviews. It was also very close to where we lived, so he thought it would be great to have a dentist so close; we had just moved and needed a new dentist. He scheduled appointments for both of us at the same time (this is important). We arrive at the office about 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork. The first issue we run into is the hygienist is running really late, so our appointments have been delayed by about 45 minutes. Okay, life happens, fine. But then we slowly realize that no other hygienist has come to get one of us: we were scheduled for concurrent appointments. Turns out, they scheduled us with ONE hygienist, back to back. At any other dental practice, they either schedule hygienists for both of us OR tell us the appointments will be back to back. We were never informed of this until we were already at the office. Alright, fine, that sucks but we're already here and most appointments don't take that long. *sigh* I should not have been so optimistic. After my husband goes in for his appointment, I am left waiting for nearly two hours before it's my turn. Two hours is very long for a dental appointment, doubly so when I still haven't been seen. Husband finally comes out and says he has 7 cavities. That seemed...excessive, but I had been waiting so long I didn't think much of it. My appointment takes less time, or at least it feels shorter because I'm not just sitting around, and the hygienist is very nice. The dentist was also nice, but when she began to examine me she just starts calling off teeth rapid-fire. No explanation as to what this is, other than "cavities", since their machine happens to be down and they can't show me what they're seeing--could be true, could be bunk. Turns out, I also have 7 cavities. Okay, this should have been a giant red flag, but I'm not a dental expert and I'm the type of person who gets paranoid that if I miss any dental appointments I'll suddenly have cavities (we'd gone one year in between dental appointments at this point, neither of us had cavities at that last appointment). I was also tired of being there, so we scheduled our appointments to have our cavities filled. And I noticed something interesting on the bill: the total charges to the insurance magically ate up all our insurance coverage for the year. Within probably $100 of our yearly coverage. Now, this could be coincidental, but I have my doubts. So, we get home and over the next few days we are feeling very apprehensive about this whole thing. I do some googling and find that this is a very common tactic in less ethical dentistry practices: they will find even the tiniest thing and say it needs to be drilled and filled, when many other dentists recommend fluoride rinses to remineralize these areas because you can't go back once you drill. We cancel our appointments to have these "cavities" filled and start searching for a new dentist. Fast forward to this week, where we both had dental appointments with a dentist my husband had seen when he was younger (they were 30 minutes away, so they hadn't been our first choice). They scheduled us at the same time and *gasp* they have two hygienists for us. I have no cavities. In fact, I have great teeth. My husband has one cavity. We go from 14 cavities last year to 1 cavity this year. I am appalled by the practices of Select Dental Group and I hope anyone who reads this will find a more reputable dentist. I hate that they made me so paranoid about my dental health and broke my trust as a patient.

I switched to Comprehensive on a recommendation from a friend after a new job's dental insurance…read morewas not accepted by my longterm dentist. While I have always found the front desk staff and dental hygienists incredibly friendly, the office business practices and my overall experience surrounding a dental crown left me unsatisfied with my care and a new anxiety around visiting the dentist. 1. Many people have mentioned their up front billing methods and constant attempts to upsell patients. While I cannot confirm that I was specifically overbilled for any procedure, I did feel like I constantly was having services pushed on me for extra fees. I also noticed at a certain point they stopped asking me about a flouride treatment that was an additional fee and just started completing the treatment and asking for payment. While this wasn't a massive strain on my finances at the time, it could really cause issues for patients who are on strict budgets from month to month. 2. I had a crown put on in March of 2021, in October of 2023 the crown fell out while on vacation out of state. I was able to book quickly to have the crown put back in but was frustrated with the brushing off my concerns around how quickly it seemed to have issues. When I returned for my normal cleaning a few months later I expressed my anxiety and fear of the crown falling out again and my concern about flossing around the crown pulling it out. I felt the doctor dismissed my concerns without any real empathy and I left the office without feeling at ease about this. 3. When I was without dental insurance for a time and was not able to afford a visit due to strained finances they did offer me their insurance plan which was more than the cost of the cleaning. I'm not sure why they thought I could afford that but not the cleaning. They continued to refer to this and all of their services as an "investment" which for me personally felt gross (though this could be a petty complaint on my end). I have since been able to return to my longtime dentist and am much happier. I do NOT recommend this office, but I do sincerely hope their services and practices improve for the sake of their patients and staff.
