I'd used TaxAct for years BUT this year it was an extremely confusing process. Apparently, I clicked on something that charged me $89. PLEASE BEWARE read more

Pathetic support, customer support is not available, even after holding the call for more than 1 hr. Online software was buggy, as it did not adjust deduction for W2 Box 14 (State Disability Insurance), so I have to file amendment. Not worth unless you have a very very simple return. read more

I used TaxAct for the past 10 years and I was happy with it; but that changed last year (2016 Return). Beginning last year, TaxAct was no longer free for filing a Form 1040. Okay, I can accept that. Few things in life are really free these days; and the TaxAct folks needed to start making a few bucks. This year (2017 Return), I was totally disgusted with the changes. For starters, you couldn't download the software and work on it from your own computer. I believe you actually could buy a downloadable version; but it cost twice as much as the online version. So, after inputting all of my tax information, TaxAct did not have any way to review the worksheets and supplemental forms (i.e. the Schedule B, IRA contributions form, etc.) The only thing I could review was a PDF file of the Form 1040. Maybe it defeats the purpose of using a tax preparation program; but I ALWAYS review everything BEFORE submitting my tax return to the IRS. Since I couldn't do that with TaxAct, I resorted to doing my taxes manually instead. The end results were a bit surprising. As best I could determine, the TaxAct software rounds every dollar amount (Income, Interest, dividends, etc.) that you enter. When I did my own calculations, I used the actual dollars and cents; only rounding the cumulative total amount. This may not sound like a big deal; but it resulted in a $3 higher refund the way I did it. That $3 difference may not be a whole lot; but it's my $3 and I want it, rather than letting the IRS have it. BTW, I checked and rechecked my figures; so there were no mistakes in my calculations. So, for the bottom line, I won't be using TaxAct this year or any other time in the future. read more

Did 2017 Fed. return without to much problem. But Arizona state return was a disaster. I was a part year resident and the return even though it asked if I was full time or part time didn't take that into consideration so there was over a $500 error in their calculation. No more TaxAct for me. read more

Great if you do not have an issue with your or a mistake was made on your efile. BUT, if you need help, there is no live chat and absolutely ludicrous wait times. I just hung up after over a hour on hold (the original wait time was 35 min). I am still trying to get a hold of someone and will probably fail as it is close to their closing time for today. I will seriously wanting to go back to paper filing. read more

TL;DR - TaxAct cost me $600 At the end of 2016 and for all of 2017 I worked for a company that gave me a 1099-MISC form for my taxes. This past March I tried to file through TaxAct and, upon finishing my return, was told that I owed $0 and was owed $0, which meant I did not need to file. So I didn't. I didn't feel right about this, so I eventually looked further into it and found that I most certainly did need to file. The piece that was missing was a Schedule C form, which I needed to fill out to determine what I owed and accurately file my taxes. The problem was that TaxAct gave ZERO indication anywhere that a schedule C form was needed. None. Whatsoever. When I entered in the information in my 1099-MISC form, TaxAct simply saved it, and told me to move on to the next part of filing. The whole point of a service like TaxAct is to simplify filing - showing you exactly how to file correctly so that you don't incur penalties. So why, on god's green earth, would TaxAct let you save an INCOMPLETE return and not even alert you that another form was needed?? Because of TaxAct, I did not file when I was supposed to, and I now owe a $600 penalty to the IRS. read more

I would give negative stars if possible. At the end of filing my tax returns, the cost mysteriously went from $35 up to $89-- and to change that amount I would have had to start all over again as TaxAct wouldn't save any info-- so, I felt trapped and cheated into paying the extra $55. After I filed my taxes, I waited THREE MONTHS only to find out TaxAct NEVER FILED MY RETURN!! When I called to speak to a person (difficult to find a human in the "press X..." loop around) they said I hadn't finished the process. But I had. I repeated the filing process and everything looked familiar-- since I had done it three months prior when I first filed my taxes. Rather than hear what I was saying, they just wanted to defend their product. It was infuriating, but then I understood: they want to take the money and run and are not really interested in their customers. Rather than noticing there was an issue with the actual filing process on their program, they only bombarded my email with offers for more products. AN OVERALL TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Only thankful that there are many other filing systems out there to work with next year. TaxAct--NEVER AGAIN--TERRIBLE!! Grade of "F" read more

Only had a W-2 and 1095A and they made me upgrade to higher priced version and made me pay $40 for direct deposit. I will never use Tax Act again! read more

Been using Taxact since 2009. I started with fairly simple Tax filing needs, and over time have gotten a bit more sophisticated as I have gotten married, kids, some stock investments, etc. I have upgraded my TaxAct return accordingly, as recommended due to increasing complexity, and have never had a need to chat with a TaxAct Tax advisor until now. I am using the Premier+ version (second most expensive), have a Tax related question that I have tried to call their (319) 373 3600 numerous times, and each time I get the same automated message that due to increase call volume they are unable to take my call...try later, and then hangs up automatically. I am disappointed would be an understatement. I will not be using them going forward, will not be recommending them to any family/friends, and anyone I know who is still using them, will make sure they are aware of my experience as a cautionary tale. read more

I have used TaxAct for several years. I always did my own taxes - and so most of the other software's that try to simplify actually make it more complicated! However this is the last year. I filed my return as I do every year. My efile was accepted by the State and by the Federal govt; my printed forms were accurate and matched what I wanted. Two weeks later my Federal Refund arrived; however not in the account I indicated - and not on the account on my return. It was deposited into an old account that I was in the process of closing after my wallet had been stolen. I thought odd - but perhaps the IRS messed up. Then I waited for my state - my state never arrived. I waited the required period and called the CA State tax board. Come to find out they accepted and approved my return in less than two weeks; but when they went to deposit my refund the deposit was rejected by my bank. That made no sense, and when we compared what was on my printed form, what my actual bank information is, and what the State had on record my bank information and printed form matched; but what was on the electronic submission from TaxAct to CA did not match my account or printed form - nor did it match any active account I had. I tried to call TaxAct to determine what went wrong and that was a nightmare. Phone Support is next to nonexistent. If you can imagine I got 10X better service from the CA tax board When using their phone prompts to try to get to technical support I was continually told the selected option was incorrect (which is the option they just told me to select) only to find that no option actually worked! Finally I spoke to one human who new nothing and could tell me no more then it was a likely a glitch...a GLITCH in filing my TAXES. I specifically pay you to file my taxes electronically, correctly! It is a bare bones tax system (which I like; but is useless to the average human who doesn't know tax law) so all I am paying you for it the ability to accurately submit my tax forms. You failed in doing that and as I sit still on hold waiting for technical support to determined exactly how this glitch occurred and confirm you didn't screw up the rest of my tax submission I know I will never recommend you again and I will not be using you in the future! read more

We used TaxAct to file NY Taxes. They did not inform us until after we paid that they were not able to file the NYC tax form for us. This meant a lot more work for us, and we still had to pay them for the full product we thought we were getting. Had we known we couldn't file our forms with them, we would not have used them (obviously). When we requested a refund, even a partial refund, they refused. read more

Site crashes far too often. Tried to finish taxes on 2 different computers (internet is working fine too) and it has taken about 8 hours so far due to site crashing. I was able to send both fed and state last night but they were both rejected because the site must have crashed before it accepted my pin from last year.. which also means that the company sent my taxes before they were actually ready! VERY frusterating! It's already not fun to do taxes but to also have to deal with an unstable site, ugh. I just want my taxes to be done, arg! I'm still not finished. I have been trying to log in to finish for about 30 mins now. I will NOT be using this site next year! Doing my taxes manually seems like a breath of fresh air right now. Thanks Taxact... for showing me that doing taxes manually isn't that bad afterall. read more

Like so many other reviews I too have been using this service for 10 years because it was simple to use and a good price. No longer! I recently almost filed my 2018 with TaxAct only to find that the state was now going to cost $39! Used to be $15 for the whole deal and I have the same complexity for all my past returns. IMHO this is over priced for what you get. I did some research and found FreeTaxUSA. After re-entering all my numbers I found it to be faster and more friendly than TaxAct. It also handled one item properly that TaxAct did not! Long story short total cost 14.95 and 10% off coupon for $13.50(Yes) read more

TaxAct (via a third party) charges a fee (in my case, $14.37) to pay for federal taxes. That is, in addition to the $14.99 you pay to use their software, if you happen to owe federal taxes, you ALSO have to pay $14.37 for the privilege of paying whatever taxes you owe through their software. I don't see this fee discussed anywhere on the TaxAct website, and was not informed beforehand that this fee would occur. If I had known about it, I would have stuck with TurboTax. I am disputing the charge, but do not have high hopes. Will not use their product again. read more

I used TaxAct for the past couple of years and was happy with them. Tried it again this year but it became unusable, as it would not allow me to go back and edit things that were entered incorrectly. I went from getting back a good sum of dough to owing almost a thousand dollars. I tried contacting them for help but they gave a half answer email and no phone or direct support. I finally gave up and went with TurboTax and actually ended up with money back again. Sorry, but TaxAct is not very usable any longer. read more

Was a happy customer up until last year when they started upcharging for everything. I wound up paying 70% more then the prior year. Couldn't get a hold of them with the 800 number. Then was asked to do a review of their services and when I basically said what I am saying here they rejected the review. So apparently they only accept good reviews which is deceptive in my opinion. I'll be switching services this year. read more

Avoid this evil company. Last year I used it. The calculation was fine while they keep asking for more money for very trivial service. I have been using the company's software on my own computer as opposed to their online service. Last year TaxAct performed just fine. This year (2017 tax year), after completing my return, I chose to have it electronically filed, as in the past. TaxAct claimed my return already had been efiled and accepted by the IRS. Nope. I had just completed it seconds before. I tried to find support FAQs covering the problem, without luck. I found a support phone number. Upon going through all the menu choices I was told that TaxAct was too busy to take my call. Then, they hung up. This was on April 3. So now I have no choice but to file the whole return on paper, in the mail. Bottom line, buggy software, shoddy support. read more

I have been using Tax Act for many years now and today I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a very unprofessional and rude woman named Michelle who was extremely abrupt, not willing to listen and kept interrupting me. I feel that I overpaid for the Product I used but she wasn't willing to hear me out or offer any assistance when I expressed my concerns. In the past the fees have been a lot lower and I do understand that there have been some changes in the government that would affect the fees. However, they have their website set up to confuse you so that you choose a more expensive product. The explanations for each product are not completely clear and when I tried to get an answer from her she seemed annoyed. For this reason I do not recommend TaxAct because they have lousy customer service and support. I will not be using them next year. read more

TaxAct has been incredibly frustrating. I liked it initially because filing my taxes were straightforward last year. However with this year, all I wanted was to print out my tax return from 2013 and it has taken hours over the course of several days. I had to pay to access both documents and once I did I only got a "view only" version. When I called they said they would charge me to speak with a representative. There have been multiple problems with logging in and the representatives do not help other than copying and pasting procedures listed on their website. I still don't have them! read more

I used Tax Act the last two years and will not be using them this year. I have spent hours trying to get back into my account and there is absolutely no customer service available. Very frustrating. My account has been locked and it can stay locked as far as I am concerned. Don't use this software and save yourself the frustration. read more

I was very disappointed with Taxacts software this year. I had started my return early as I file a state & federal. I could not remember the steps of how to file state only as my husband & I don't both file a state return. I called into customer service & the rep was giving me instructions on how to print my return...not what I needed. I sent an email requesting assistance & continued to call but their phone line said unable to take any calls due to high call volume. This went on for 2 weeks! Then was roped into paying for deluxe even tho I had no deductions & spent $75 for no reason. I had sent another email asking for a refund for the difference between standard & deluxe with no response. I will not be using their software any longer. read more

Be careful before you upgrade...very deceptive! Was lead to believe I needed to upgrade to a higher premium freelancer package. When I realized i did not after I had finished my taxes there was no way to go back to the previous plan. I called customer service twice and each time was met by a very rude representative that told me it was impossible to go back to the previous version without redoing my taxes all over. Seem hard to believe since it is a software program. I have been a loyal taxact user for 10 years so would have expected more from them. Instead I was told that was "the rules", although their "rules" are not at all clearly stated in their software. I was lied to and told their manager was at lunch at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and was yelled at because I thought it was ridiculous that I would have to redo all my taxes to revert back to the previous version. Will not be using them again next year! read more

Used to be pretty good and I dealt with a more difficult process than with other tax prep software because of good pricing. Its more difficult to use, much more expensive and your consistently being nickeled and dimed through the process. For over 10 years I have done 6 returns a year with them (My spouse and I and my kids) but this year I am going elsewhere. read more

I used taxact for several years to file a few very simple corporate tax returns. Everything was great until receiving error messages that i could not remedy. The first year we used Taxact in 2017 was great, quick and easy user experience with minimal fees. This year it was a chore, slow, complicated, minimal explanation, and worst of all, if you have a pop-up blocker enabled, you cannot download your return to print or file until you disable it. As soon as you do disable it, the hit you with pop-up ads advertising their service. Never again. read more

I just had the worst support experience with TaxAct (actually with any company I have ever worked with). I was trying to log back into my account and getting an ERROR CODE 022 on the taxact.com login page. I use a password manager so I know my credentials were good. I clicked the helpful chat icon at the bottom of the page to receive support. I explained my problem. I was tersely told that there was a "connection issue" and that support cannot help me any further. I pressed anyway and asked what I was supposed to do to access my account, flabbergasted. I was then insulted and told to go to a library! Great! Thanks TaxAct. Now I have to throw away the couple of hours I spent yesterday on my return. Why? Firstly, because I cannot access my account and their support is worse than not helpful. Secondly, because if they think they are EVER getting my business, then picture a snowball in Hades. Unbelievable. read more

Absolutely terrible. I spent over 3 1/2 hours filing my return because of their terrible website. It should have taken less than an hour. Lock-ups, and freezes CONSTANTLY. I had to manually reload pages at least a dozen times because of the frequent freezes. Three times I had to completely leave the site and resign in to get past some of the freezes. The software is also terrible. We had better tax software back in the 80's than what they have on their website. Very hard to follow and they give you no help or hints at all. In the review they will tell you a W2 needs additional information but not tell you WHICH W2 they are talking about. I will NOT be using them next year, or EVER again. read more

I used the business software to file 1120 for a C corp with multiple states included. Software does not allow for state adjustment of depreciation (required by a few states). Called support to discuss it and the recorded message stated they were busy and I would have to email them. When I submitted the email I got a pop-up reply that they would respond "in a few days." So, support is virtually non-existent. They also mislead you to get you to purchase. I had called early to inquire about an additional state module and asked if the price included the e-filing. I was told it did include that but when I went to efile it, I was required to pay another fee. As for navigating the software, it's a bit cumbersome and not particularly user-friendly. It's manageable enough if you know a fair amount about tax returns and accounting procedures. (That's for the business software) The individual tax software is a bit easier if you have a basic, simple return. Things are not very well explained and guidance is meager. But again, the support is the pits. You are basically on your own after you purchase. It's cheaper than the other software options out there but sometimes it's better to spend a little extra and make life easier. Being cheaper does not always equate to being a better value. read more

Bait and Switch. Been using them for years. Always get an email in the fall advising to lock in price now before the increase. Always have. $14.99 for federal and state returns. This year, do my taxes as usual. Get to the end and just before your asked to efile the federal return, the payment window pops up (just like it has done in past years). So I pay the $14.99 and eflile the federal return. Then the program goes on to the final touches of the State return (again just like in past years), only this time I must pay another $14.99 to file the state return. A 100% doubling of the "locked in" price. I email customer support and 2 days later get a reply providing directions on how to find my pricing within the my TaxAct account. Yeah, so after doing like 10 steps clicking on this and that and opening this window then another then another then another, the pricing is there indicating that it's $14.99 for each return. The fact that that the pricing is hidden in so many submenu's within the program speaks columes on hw shady this company has become. OK TaxAct, you got me this year and I hope you enjoy the extra $15 as that's the last $15 you'll ever see from me. read more

Used it for years. Came to expect an upsell -- I mean, who really gets stuff for free? But an upsell is "hey, we see you might benefit from this feature here." What you get this year is "hey, sucker, we see you have an HSA; to deal with that, you need to pay us $15." Then, when you agree to that, a little while later you get a "hey, guess what? Your Schedule C is gonna cost ya a Premium membership." Okay, so I got all the way through thinking I'd spent $35, and then they wouldn't even let me see my "free" state form till I paid another $25, because Premium. Never, ever again will I take part in this swindle. read more

I have used TaxAct for 8 years as a paid customer. No complaints from all those years. I recently retired and can now go with the "free" filing. Truly doesn't have Priority Service as advertised for those filing specialized and complex forms. I have been trying to get through on the telephone for two days and I just get a standard canned response about their phones being too busy to take my call! Do not waste your money. Zero stars. The online tax preparation racket is yet another example of well-funded special interests screwing the public. Most people's taxes could be handled simply by an in-house IRS program. The IRS has most of your data already and it's a simple matter to pre-populate most of your tax return from that. But instead, we are forced to go outside the IRS and use "services" like TaxAct. Why? Because they and TurboTax and H&R Block have buddies in Congress, and Congress writes the rules. TaxAct used to be halfway decent, but now it's complete garbage. A labyrinth and a pain in the butt to find what you want to change or edit. And for all of this, it costs more than before! Do not use. Zero Stars. read more

They convince you to purchase their "Deluxe" software because you have a couple of "non-standard" forms that have to be filled out. I had a 1099-NEC and also had to fill out an IRS Form 8949. To do so, required me to purchase the Deluxe Version for $64.95. AFTER I purchased it I discovered that I could not really fill out the 8949 on-line and had to attach documents. Since I did NOT have access to a scanner, I was forced to print out the entire return and then mail it to the IRS!! What a RIPOFF. The icing on the cake? I was just asked by TaxAct to review my experience with them and since my submission was NOT positive, I got a response from them that my review did not meet the "requirements" they have to be published!
