They convince you to purchase their "Deluxe" software because you have a couple of "non-standard" forms that have to be filled out. I had a 1099-NEC and also had to fill out an IRS Form 8949. To do so, required me to purchase the Deluxe Version for $64.95. AFTER I purchased it I discovered that I could not really fill out the 8949 on-line and had to attach documents. Since I did NOT have access to a scanner, I was forced to print out the entire return and then mail it to the IRS!! What a RIPOFF. The icing on the cake? I was just asked by TaxAct to review my experience with them and since my submission was NOT positive, I got a response from them that my review did not meet the "requirements" they have to be published! REALLY?? I guess only positive or good reviews get published by TAXACT. Beware of using this company.....there are other tax-help options that would be MUCH better!! read more

If I could provide ZERO stars I would! It doesn't work! Gives error message at startup and good luck getting hold of their support! If you like listening to elevator music, you'll have a great time. I paid $60 for the Plus edition and can't even use it! Don't even know if I can get a refund so I can get something that really does work, like TurboTax or H&R Block's software. Update: I ended up using H&R Block's Plus edition, a breath of fresh air, only cost $29.99 including California state and e-filing for both Fed and State, and I even used their live chat to get some help along the way and the wait was only about 10 seconds, compared to over 30 minutes wait for TaxAct just to get someone on the line to tell them their program wasn't working and get a refund. By the way, I itemize my returns, so this wasn't just a simple 1040A type return, it included all kinds of 1099-INT & DIV and other schedule forms. read more

I have been using TaxACT since 2003 and Professionally since 2007. Never using them again as they're a scam trying to get more money from people after they prepaid for the software. I paid $700 for the bundle which comes with all states, federal and unlimited efile. I had to buy all states again at $99 online as when I called they wanted another $540. When I wrote a bad review on Twitter they offer to refund my money but they never have and want to deal with you though Direct Messages so others can't see how they treat their customers. The only thing I got done was an email showing they canceled my states and unlimited efile. As of now I'm out $1009 on a $700 software program. read more

Have used TaxAct for years. It's kludgy in that it's hard to move around inside the program to the exact place you want. This year, it just doesn't work. I did the return, got all the way to filing when it told me to go back to review and fix alerts. I did that,and it is absolutely stuck at that spot.Go back and fix alerts. Go back and fix alerts. Emailed their service people with theproblem. Automatic email says expect a one or two bus. day response. It's day four and nothing. So, bye-bye- Tax Act for good. read more

The software works and is presumably accurate. There are extra costs to file state returns. But, as others state, if you have a question, it's impossible to reach anyone on the phone. After figuring out that the program would not e-file because I had 1 non-job related income check and thus Taxact makes you buy the Freelancer program, I wanted to know if I could upgrade instead of starting all over from scratch. Day #1 waited 30 minutes. Day #2 waiting 1 hour 5 minutes, Day #3 waiting 1 hour 45 minutes. Literally noone, answers the phone and there is no other way to get support. Will not use this product again. The inability to provide a functional customer support line, also makes one wonder about the quality of the software. read more

The process was easy. Contacting them is impossible without a phone call. Can NOT find an email support for them. I am constantly having to get "verification" codes sent to log in, EVERY TIME. This is ridiculous & stupid & now it's not sending code anymore. So now have to wait til they are "open" in order to contact. TaxAct has become more difficult to navigate each year. Also when/if you add any kind of product, even by accident, you can NOT get it off! There is no option for removing cost for a product you do not want, once its clicked it's on there. So I didn't file my fiances taxes through taxact because they wanted to charge $16 for an import I didnt use or want & ANOTHER $25 on top of that to pay it from the refund. So I'd lose $31 for nothing. Overall TaxAct is not user friendly & customer service is extremely hard to contact, with out taking a chunk out of your day to make the phone call & sit on hold. read more

I've used TaxAct for years (I do my entire family's returns - we all pay, since we use for both Fed and State and income levels are such that there is no free option for us) and have been mostly pleased. 2017 has been a nightmare. Here it is, March 12, 2018 and the Estimated Tax component has not been loaded yet. Their software says that this will be part of a future release! Really, what year? How can one file their taxes, especially when one owes the IRS and you cannot use the estimate tax component to figure your estimates going forward. What a second rate operation! We have used this online service for my mom's taxes for several years, and have not had any problems. This year (2019), when filing 2018 returns, we found that after completing the returns we were unable to figure out how to review or edit the return online to make corrections. When we contacted the company for assistance, the customer service representative that we spoke to, "Anferne", was exceedingly disrespectful, first to my mom, then to me. He insisted that we weren't being specific enough for him to be able to help us, then refused to get his supervisor, stating "they don't know any more than we do". We were then told that we would have to give them a credit card number in order to edit the tax return. We will use TurboTax from this point forward. read more

I have used TaxAct for many years. However it really went down hill for tax year 2015. I signed up early to "lock in" a fee of $7.99 for federal and $6.00 for my state of California return. Their rates went up significantly this year so I thought it was wise to do this. When I signed in and filled out my information the system didn't recognize me and I had to pay $30.00 or lose all of my information. I have tried to call and been on over 15 minutes holds twice. What poor customer service. Their software had a glitch in it when l went to pay my taxes with my debit card, a screen popped up that said" amount to large, try different payment method". So l did a direct payment from my bank. The next day l had been charged twice! I'm filing for a partnership and have called over 25 times and have emailed with a few simple questions and have been unable to get through to anyone, except for the technical support team which can't answer the questions. I've used TaxACT for years without a problem. This year they are all about ripping off the people that have stood by them. They had a promotion, if you pay $15 now you will be getting it 1/2 off when tax time comes. That never happened. The software is awful. In the end you either pay them $35 to send you a card with your refund on it or $35 to a bank so the refund will be directly deposited. And also $39 for Fed and $39 for State. Thanks TaxAct for eating 1/2 my refund. I'm printing out all of my info and going to their biggest competitor. I'm wondering if their practices are unlawful this year. Ive been using TaxAct for many many years. With same personal situation, price went up from ~$20 to almost $100. Support is horrible. Calling support is non existent (they are refusing to accept call and telling you to check the online help). Despite sending support ticket asking to fix the QBID calculation issue linked to section 199A, TaxAct never replied to my requests. They finally released version 1.06 fixing the problem. Completed my mother tax return using TaxAct on 1/23/17 and submitted the return at 7:55am. As of today, 1/25/17 it is still saying awaiting acceptance. Contacted Taxact regarding this but they could not answer anything. My mother called taxact today and they said it shows it was sent. My mother went online while they were still on the phone and advised the person that it was showing awaiting acceptance. A few of her co-workers are experiencing the same issues. When you go the IRS website to refund status it does not show that the return was ever received. I know 4 different people who filed on the same day with H&R block online software and their returns were accepted by the IRS within 15 minutes. Taxact needs to fix whatever glitch they have going on or start refunding their customers the $30 fee they charged to file the returns. read more

Stay away from Taxact. Their software has major bug for California Tax and customer service is horrible. They are a scam!! I used TAXACT online software for filing my 2017 Tax. After filing, I received a penalty notice from Franchise Tax Board California for incorrect calculation of taxes. When I contacted Franchise Tax Board they explained to me that Taxact software has incorrectly calculated my taxes All the data that I entered into Taxact while filing the taxes were correct but Taxact software has major bug in determination of estimated tax payment penalty. To be specific, Taxact software does not check for 2016 AGI for determining the penalty. As per FORM 5805 instructions, for Part II question #5, if the 2016 AGI is greater than $150K, 110% of the Taxes paid in 2016 should be entered in Part II Line #5 in the form.. This requirement is very clear on FORM 5805 and very basic check to determine the penalty. But Taxact is missing this calculation. When contacted, the Taxact customer service supervisor (Jeff) states that this is missing in their software and hence the user need to read the instructions in Form 5805 and manually file the form. Ridiculous!!. Taxact expects the user to read 1000's of pages of tax code ? I do not know how many other calculations are missing and /or incorrect in this software. If you received a estimated tax payment penalty, first file a accuracy guarantee claim at Taxact. read more

Only after I had spent more than an hour filling out all the forms for a Trust tax return did TaxACT reveal they didn't support state returns for Oregon. This should have been disclosed up front or at a minimum when I typed in my address. It's clear they deliberately hid that information in order to lure you in. I've used taxact for years now and I've always paid for state,which, O.K, that's fine, it's still been cheap. This year they say state and federal free... yeah whatever! Only free until you say you've got an HSA account then they say you have to pay for the taxact plus to complete... say $20... O.K... that's cheap... UNTIL you get to the end then they tell you that it's $50 - $20 for federal and $30 for state... AND THEN...WAIT, it's not done yet!!! That's right, there's MORE!! Then they want to charge you another $25 for the direct deposit! Cheaper than Turbo tax is the plus. You can get a hold of taxact pretty fast which was nice but every person I talked to had no idea to answer any questions. It took a lot of time which was a waist!!! A friend ended up figuring it out before their reps. Also at one point they said I should go to their help area and type in my problem. Wow, they must all be brand new so don't waste your time calling for any help. read more

I had good luck with TaxAct in 2016 and 2017, paying about $30 each year for filing fed and state returns. Was looking forward to 2018, and at very end billed $97 for Premium Plan (new $39 state filing fee in addition to fed fee sprung on me at end of inputting data) with no visible way to make it cheaper Plus Plan (200% instead of 300% price hike). Bogus contact box on web site asks for your email password and arcane info (e.g. is email provider POP3 or IMAP, etc.), obviously designed not to work. No way or no one at company to contact about billing adjustments. Will have to complain via my Chase Freedom Visa card and see if a stop-payment gets their attention. TaxAct has definitely gotten worse, very mercenary and cutthroat. No doubt management will reap big bonuses for this "dollar-harvest" and retire to the Cayman Islands to research bigger and better $$ scams. Unfortunately, I suspect other online tax services are equally bad. This is the consumer downside of IRS and state policies making taxes overly complex to compute, as you are too exhausted to start over. read more

I've used TaxAct for a number of years with little problem. This year was a nightmare. I had a question about deleting a form in the state return. Can't file until it is solved. For half the day couldn't even log into the website. Tech support (finally reached a person) couldn't help. Finally got in, but it wouldn't let me log in with the password I'd used up until then. So I tried to reset the password. Wouldn't accept my answers to my security questions. And took many tries to reset password. Many more charges than last year. Saw an offer of free state return if filed in the next day and a half, but no free state return when I started to file. Tech support didn't know what they were talking about half the time. read more

They claim free but mid way thru completion it changed my sons tax return, who is a college student, from a 1040 ez to a basic for which I was charged $31.95. Taxact used to be a good company to file a tax return with, but after today I have nothing but bad things to say about this company. My son filed his first tax refund on the 4th of February. The I.R.S s aid that his refund was sent on the 22nd of February to an account set up by tax act. I called Taxact and was told that we have to call a bank named Repubic and talk to them about the refund cause after you file with Taxact they are not responsible for your refund. I asked to speak to a manager and the manager refused to get on the phone. I will be suggesting the H&R block tax service. read more

My tax return got more complicated with royalty trust and k-1 entries - NOT easy to do in this program. I have used taxact since 2008 for my return and my daughter's. There have been glitches in the past BUT this year (2018) is horrendous. 1st of all they DO NOT respond to emails, 2nd the call wait time was over 50 minutes, 3rd while waiting, their messages about how to check when IRS forms will be available is misleading. All you see when following these instructions is a list of forms and a check mark if form had been released. You CAN NOT tell when form will be releashed. And finally sneaky price increases that you do not know about until AFTER you have finished the return and are ready to file. read more

I've been using Taxact since 2007 and have used it every year since. I've used the online version and have had no trouble. The system is user friendly and walks you through the whole process. My taxes have been complicated in past years and I still had no problem. If you pay an extra fee, you can access previous years for a certain duration (I don't remember the length of time). I did this the first year of using them, but now just save the PDF version to my laptop so as not to pay the extra cost. For the fee they charge ($18 for both federal and state), you really get a lot. Turbo tax is excessively expensive. For that fee, I'd pay a professional. I will continue to use Taxact and am grateful that there's such a great software out there for a reasonable price. read more
