Like most others, I have had a terrible experience with TaxCRAP! I got the same results as many others, trying to get me to upgrade, and at the end forcing me to upgrade for what should be normal circumstances. (Student loan interest paid, and Health Savings Account) At that point I just wanted to be done. I was wrong. My filings had never been sent or accepted. I went back to TaxCRAP and NO RECORDS FOUND, but the $74.09 charge had posted to my credit card account. I tried calling and was told, that they saw I was charged and didn't know what happened. I was advised to call back to the same phone number, but to select a different option. I ended up having to call back the next day, and the customer service rep. said, that I had not been charged but was going to refund me $75. I called my credit card co. and made sure we were on the same page about this. That I was not to pay them, and expecting money back. I redid my taxes a second time with OLT.com (Online Taxes.com) state and federal, and it was FREE!!! As in $0.!!!! That is what I want to give them, 0 stars.DON'T USE TAXAACT!!! read more

After using TaxAct for 20 years and recommending it to many people, I am disappointed in their new business model, which in my opinion is designed to scam users. First, let me inform you that to e-file your 2017 Federal form it's $29.99 plus an additional $37 to file State and to import your data from last year it is $15. Of course, the following is only my opinion, but I think it is really sad that they have chosen to reprogram their system in such a way that the user is basically forced to select an upgrade. The problem occurs after you have entered all the information and elect e-file. You cannot move forward but the system will not tell you why. There is no error message and if there is one it won't make sense. I tried on my Mac then moved to a PC and entered the same problem. If you select upgrade you then cannot undo it. The really troublesome part is their customer and tech support. They will tell you anything to get you off the phone without refunding your money. Tech Support asked me why I didn't call them before I selected the upgrade option. Well, I would have but your support line was closed; you don't operate 24/7. Their main reason for not refunding will be "you printed the form" even though your purpose in using the system is to e-file. They believe that insulates them and provides a legal reason taking your money. Also be aware, when I selected the unsubscribe link in their email I was directed to a page that was "not found" but instead has links to their homepage. You have to search to get to the unsubscribe page and it's not the first listing in their SEO. Apologies to all those who used TaxAct based on my recommendation. read more

I've been using Taxact since 2007 and have used it every year since. I've used the online version and have had no trouble. The system is user friendly and walks you through the whole process. My taxes have been complicated in past years and I still had no problem. If you pay an extra fee, you can access previous years for a certain duration (I don't remember the length of time). I did this the first year of using them, but now just save the PDF version to my laptop so as not to pay the extra cost. For the fee they charge ($18 for both federal and state), you really get a lot. Turbo tax is excessively expensive. For that fee, I'd pay a professional. I will continue to use Taxact and am grateful that there's such a great software out there for a reasonable price. read more

I've used TaxAct for about six years now, paying for the last two years. This year (2016) I was disappointed when I tried to file electronically, as I had done for the past five years, and found that there is a $25 charge for Federal. I'm also convinced that they just don't understand Delaware State taxes. I had to take my TaxAct FedTax forms to the State Div of Revenue to get the correct answers. It is nearly impossible to contact TaxAct's phone support. The menus are very confusing -most lead to their website or a recording that probably won't answer your question. I've used Taxact for the last 3 or 4 years. I will NEVER use them again. I had prepaid for the Deluxe+ version, last year. During the process of doing my taxes through Taxact two days ago, I noticed that it never brought up a major deduction that I needed to submit. I was surprised that it was not addressed. I called the Customer Support phone number provided in the Taxact program. The robo-answer said that they were not taking phone calls! No "we're busy, but we'll call you later" type of answer, but a simple "we're not taking phone calls." If so, why provide a phone number in the first place? This is the very start of the tax season (I called on January 29, 2019) and they should not be that busy. In any case, I went for the backup and emailed them. I have not received an answer in two days. Yes, I checked my "spam" folder. I am done with Taxact, and will no doubt have to fight to get my payment for the 2019 tax season returned. read more

This was my first year having to pay because of my itemized deductions. They said it was $14.99 each for federal and state so I followed through with the payment. After submitting, my summary of charges was $51.97, when it should've been $30. Since I paid, I was allowed to call for assistance. The wait was long but when I finally spoke with someone about the charges, he put me on hold for 10 minutes then hung up on me. So I called back and was disconnected immediately. Called back and waited for someone for 20 minutes before giving up. You have to be careful with the website. As you are clicking next, next, next, you won't notice that there are checked boxes by default that bring your refund down if you don't uncheck before continuing. I learned this the hard way. I have no idea why I got overcharged, but I am NOT using TaxAct anymore! read more

I have used TaxACT since 2011 because it has been reasonably priced and easy to use. I guess they decided that those were not winning strategies. This year I tried the free version for my teen age daughter's return and the premium version for mine. With the free version, after nearly an hour of trying and with their online help, I was unable to even sign in. The premium version was no less frustrating to use and a lot more expensive. We've used Taxact for several years. They advertise as "free filing," but this seems like bait and switch for all but perhaps the most simple returns.The cost keeps going up. This year (filing for 2015), it was twice as expensive as last year. (Although I did need to file as a "business owner" since I made a small amount freelancing, so that automatically bumped us up a level.) More importantly, perhaps, the notes and tips are very few and far between this year. I had to heavily use Google and IRS.gov to get my questions answered. In addition, the program itself seemed less user-friendly. We stuck with it for this year but will be looking for a replacement for next year. Steer clear! read more

DO NOT USE TAXACT TO E-FILE YOUR TAXES!!! I paid extra to be able to file both my Federal and my State returns. It was a pretty simple process all the way through. When I came to the end of entering my data and submitted my returns, Taxact asked me if I wanted to e-file both (Federal and state) returns. I clicked 'yes'. I got an email from both state and federal stating that they have been filed and were awaiting acceptance....I thought "awesome! this was easy" A little over a week later, I receive my federal refund. A few days after that, I receive a notice from state saying that you can't file 'State Only' (which I didn't). My state was rejected because of a 'Glitch' in Taxact's software which sent it separately. I contacted Taxact's support which was a HUGE WAIST OF TIME. They never once, answered any of my questions. I responded back to them requesting a refund since I paid extra for filing my state which didn't happen because of THEIR ERROR. Their response to me was "you signed the agreement with us". I did sign the agreement but I DID NOT AGREE TO THEIR MESSED UP SOFTWARE THAT THEY DO NOT SUPPORT! Now I have to mail my state return in! Not only did I waist time in receiving my state refund, but I paid Taxact for all this. NEVER AGAIN read more

Very sleazy--they changed the price after Inputting the information I signed up for the free filing. I checked off which items I had to report, and It was still listed as free. After 25 minutes of inputting the information--SURPRISE !! ----you have to pay for the filing! I would have paid for the filing, if I were told upfront, but since this does not feel trustworthy, I wouldn't trust Taxact. I used TURBOTAX for free. I would NOT recomend as I felt this was deceptive. read more

Tax act sucks. Let me make that more clear. They really SUCK!! It took me an hour and 45 mins to file our taxes on this site. I used Turbo Tax last year and it took well under 1 hour. I wanted to try a different company this year but never again. These folks made me re-enter the same info over and over and over and over again. It kept asking for info I do not have on hand and it finally gave me a pin number to use. It also said that they would file state returns for $12.00 They actually charged me $15. It finally accepted my returns but the following day I got an email saying they were not filing my federal returns. No reason. Just not doing it. OMG! I tried to use them this year, for my October 15, 2015 return. I have used them for several previous years. I was beginning to panic that I would not be able to get them filed as software kept continually closing me down! Then when I would immediately sign back on, I was never taken to "where I left off", but several pages prior to that, so had to go back and re-enter all the entries again! I've been purchasing and using TaxACT since they started in 1998. Used to be a good product. This year it's turned into a terrible waste of money. No customer support, confusing new product line. Wasn't bad for the last 2 or 3 years, cost me $20 to file 2013 and 2014, but what a bait and switch this year. First, part way in they want to charge you at least $15 to import last year's info. Then if you want an actual copy of last year's to look at, that's another fee (luckily I had last year's saved as a pdf and printed out anyhow). But I had to choose the $25 plan so I can itemize my mortgage and a couple of very basic deductions (charity, etc). It took me longer than last few years, it seemed more complicated. THEN, at the end, they wanted to charge ANOTHER $25 to file my state taxes. Which basically is answer 4 or 5 questions and boom, you're done. I went on the Georgia DOR site and it listed TaxACT as "get your state taxes filed for FREE if you're Adjusted Gross Income is under $50,000." Which mine is just under that. Nowhere on the TaxACT site is anything about this at all. They have misrepresented themselves to the State of Georgia.... And I feel completely ripped off and won't be using them again. read more

Unaware, TaxAct Online had downgraded me from Premium filing (1040 with capital gains) to a simpler Plus filing (1040 with Schedule A and associated forms) for tax year 2016. I had been using TaxAct Online for at least 10 years. However, this year, TaxAct Online deleted my repeat-customer-guaranteed and locked-in $26.95 filing fee for Premium filing and charged me $40 for a simpler Plus filing. I had previously paid $16.95 or less for its Plus filing before using only once its Premium filing. I immediately telephoned TaxAct Online and reported the pricing discrepancy; the customer service representative lowered the Plus filing fee to $35, still above $16.95. After a day, I received a customer service representative emailed response; she lowered the Plus filing fee to $26.95, the previously guaranteed and lock-in Premium filing fee though I was using a simpler and less expensive Plus filing service. Since the higher pricing snafu is TaxAct Online mistake, "No, Thank you, TaxAct". Via an online search, I found many inexpensive filing services or free filing services with ads. One online filing service have no ads and offered everything that I needed at $0 cost. The only disadvantage at this competitor's filing service is that this year's tax data and info is not transferable to next year's filing. However, after completing TaxAct Online data input this year but surprised by TaxAct high regular pricing for a simple product, re-entering data on a competitor's online filing service is no biggie. Until TaxAct Online gets its act together, I would, and recommend that you, avoid TaxAct Online. read more

I have been a satisfied TaxAct customer for 5 years (maybe 6), but after completing my 2015 returns I am completely dissatisfied. Last year I paid $21.99 (Deluxe) and for the same return this year it was $69.98 (Premium) ... they tripled the price for the same service!!! When I tried to lessen the blow by downgrading to the Plus return, it was not possible without creating a new user/return ... one click to upgrade, near impossible to downgrade. read more

I have used TAXACT for years and appreciate the easy way to answer questions and fill in forms. However, this year (for 2017 taxes) I needed a form TAXACT did not have available. I entered in their system to be alerted when the form became available. After weeks of waiting I decided to call to get an idea. whenever I would call I was told it would be a 1 hr 55 min wait time (every time! week day or week end) I finally bit the bullet and waited. Brianna (VERY SWEET!) told me the form had become available the previous week (I was NEVER alerted & their online page shows it is NOT available). I asked how I could go about making a complaint regarding lack of TAXACT support access (no chatline, no email, 2 hour ph wait) and problems with the program (no alert, no site update, wrong recorded phone message while waiting for support). She said it would just have to go through her as there is not a formal place to register a complaint. THANKS YELP!!! read more

Don't even think about filing a state return for Louisiana using TaxAct. It would not let me save or print the return. Trying to do so caused a lot of trouble saving and printing my federal return too. After about an hour of getting the runaround on live chat and by phone, I finally got the federal return to save and print. Not so yet with the state. They said maybe in a few weeks. They said there is some kind of problem with the format required by Louisiana. That should not be my problem. I expect to be able to save and print my return before I file it. If they can't provide a service properly, they should just say so and stop wasting people's time. Also, as of this year, when filing a federal return with them, you no longer receive a text from the IRS when your return has been accepted for processing. That was almost immediate before. I have been using TaxAct for about 20 years and never had a problem. I used to think they were great, but not any more. read more

I used TaxAct last year and it was free. I remember itemizing my healthcare bills. I used them again for 2017 tax filing. When I logged in and started the process, the message was pretty simple & attractive - "Free filing for married filing jointly". No mention of complications like 1040A & 1040EZ filing is free, but 1040 (for any itemizations) will be charged. I itemized my hospital bills & my wife's college bills. TaxAct selected 1040 because of itemizations, instead of the simpler 1040EZ. It didn't warn me about this while answering their lengthly QA sessions. Considering it took me 48hrs to collect bills, total them & answer their questions, its a big deal. When I was on the last screen, the site told that due to information I have provided, they will file 1040 and it'll cost $29 for Federal return & $38 for California state return. I went for it considering time spent. Will try not to use TaxAct next time. I only itemized hospital bills (most ppl will be in similar situation) & college tuition. Did not have anything else like investment, other income etc. read more

I have used Taxact for the past three years with absolutely no problems until now. I filed my taxes with their system on February 2, 2014 for the 2013 tax year. I allowed them to automatically charge my credit card for what I owed and automatically deposit my return. I got confirmation emails within days that both my federal and state returns had been accepted and that no further action was needed. Imagine my shock when today, May 27, 2014, I receive a letter in the mail from the IRS stating that I owed taxes from my February filing with Taxact. I quickly found both confirmation emails and then began searching through bank statements to find where the money had gone. Looks like Taxact took my information, but never let the IRS have my payment. When I tried to confirm this with Taxact I was again shocked that there wasn't a phone number anywhere on the site to speak with someone for help. All the questions in the help section were useless for my problem. Thanks for nothing Taxact. You've lost a customer who used to tell everyone she knew how great you were. read more

This is my first year and my last. Strange thing is that I never entered anything but my income and mortgage interest...They sent me emails that I need to finish tax return and then I received a letter from the IRS advising we'd be receiving over $4500 refund...Very confusing since I did not complete return on TaxAct and DID NOT give them authorization to send to IRS. Add the fact that we had filed an extension, and it was very strange when we received a check from Republic Bank with memo that fees were paid "on our behalf" to Republic Bank and 2nd Story Software. I called IRS and was informed that our return was in fact filed with only our income and mortgage interest reported. Now we have to take all these measures to file our 2014 tax returns and receive special identification numbers for the next five years when filing. DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM. IT IS FRAUDULENT ...IRS advised that practice is to put the refund on a card so the recipient never gets the full amount. Thank goodness that there was something that triggered that a check be issued to us (their website reports this particular bank issues cards) so I could follow up on this. Very sneaky. We now have to make a report to credit bureaus.... read more

This is a lowest priced, reliable software as far as I know. Turbo-Tax is easier and more intuitive, but very pricey. Forms are pretty easy to fill out. Sending to IRS and state, either electronic or paper, is easy. If you filed online last year, you should have access to 2014 data. When you add data, it seems the best way to view the outcome is go to Forms and get a PDF. I had to ask for help twice and used email. Received in-depth responses that resolved both problems. For inexpensive and accurate federal and state taxes this works very well. I see others who have seemed to be charged pretty high rates. I paid $17.99 using their Ultimate bundle, sending both Federal and State electronically and made a PDF copy to retain. The PDF copy could be sent snail-mail, but why do that when electronic is easy. Update 2/28/16: Both electronic returns went through where I paid one and got a refund on the other. Pretty painless. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would... My fiance needed to file differently we have never filed being self employed before. We had a family friend do all the filing. Once it was done all I had to do was finish filling and pay what we owed. I put my card number in and clicked next it then asked me his gross income from last year.. which I didn't know so I had to find that paperwork from previous year. When I went back in to file it logged me out so I clicked start where I left off and it was asking for me card number again. I checked my bank account and it was already pending.. I called Tax Act and the man told me just to click pay later by mailed check.. Which seemed very strange to me, How was I supposed to know that?? I did what he told he said they would realize they have an authorization and would just change my card. Well it didn't the auth. was released. I then called Tax Act again explaining and she said that the card should have been charged and she doesn't know why. She then told me theres nothing she can do and I cannot pay over the phone and I now have to pay the IRS directly. (which I would be penalized for paying too late because it is now past tax day) GREAT.... After arguing she then gave me a number to call. That number could take my card over the phone.. Go figure and she said she didn't know why either of them told me to check off that I was sending a check by mail which is what I said too.. Doesn't make any sense.. Thanks to her I got to pay over the phone on me debit card but what I want to know is whyyy they all don't have the same information they have no idea what is going on! Filing taxes is a serious thing and if something goes wrong the individual will be penalized for something that Tax Act did wrong. It is so frustrating. So hopefully all goes well after my card is processed what a great $25 to file when they couldn't help and made everything worse! Will never be filling with them again! read more

I was happy with TaxACT for several years, but this year it became VERY EXPENSIVE and a 'clunkier' and more difficult user experience for me. Other years I remember paying $12.99 to download, This year the price went to $19.99, but they have it rigged so you can't file unless you pay another $10 and that's completely hidden!. TaxACT says their TaxACT Basic will calculate your investments, and it does do that, but 'investments' does NOT INCLUDE CAPITOL GAINS! So if you made a single mutual fund sale, TaxACT won't calculate your Capitol gains, so the final numbers will be wrong, and you just can't use it...Unless you fork over another $10 for Plus! And virtually everyone who gets a 1099-Div also gets a 1099-B so the whole idea that TaxACT Basic is viable for anyone with stocks or mutual funds is nonsense and untruthful. I'll pay the silly $10 but with the Internet as my witness, I shall never use TaxACT again. read more
