I decided on Hemelhuys, a little gem tucked away on a pedestrian street, a stone-throw away from Hasselt's serene cathedral, St. Quintinus, and close to the town's fancy stores and great restaurants. This quaint, welcoming boutique hotel has eight spacious rooms combining modern-day comfort with old-fashioned charm. These tastefully renovated units are spread over two old stone houses connected by a small but lush garden. The short walk through this pretty garden is aptly names Chemin du Bonheur. Both owners, Ann and Liesbeth, blend discreet elegance with genuine small-town warmth, and go out of their way to make guests feel at home. And, just like the owners, the young staff is very attentive to the guests' needs and, in addition, smiles a lot -- a pleasant touch that augments one's enjoyment of the place. Breakfasts are most inviting: a selection of assorted fresh breads and bakery products, home-made jams, cheeses, fresh fruit and, for hungrier people, a variety of egg dishes. Location + charm + service + comfort + caring owners + friendly staff = compelling combination to embrace Hemelhuys, a delightful hotel of superb taste in a town that prides itself on being Hoofdstad van de Smaak (Capital of Good Taste). I will have to lie but I'd guess they serve about 400 different beers, mostly all Belgian. So if you want to try out some Belgian beers or just want to get drunk, and you are in the neighborhood this is the place to go. (Delirium, Kwak, Karmeliet,.. being my personal favorite ones) On the down side, the service sometimes can be sloppy and you will have to wait longer than at most pubs. But all these different beers are well worth the wait!

I had the good fortune of being the one and only patron for the first hour and I sat and talked to the owner, Pieter. This place just has that authentic Irish feel to it. I actually walked a half a mile past another Irish pub that was closer to my hotel to get to this one. Maastricht does not have as much exposure to Yelp, so I actually had to look for a recommendation on another site. That is exactly why I am reviewing this restaurant. Yelpers need to know this place! I enjoyed a Smithwick's on tap. The beer was extremely cold, and the pint was a perfect pour! However, the biggest draw for me was the fish and chips. They are absolutely delicious! The fish is a rather large piece, done right in beer batter. It is also extremely flaky and I consider this a good thing! The pub is also known to be a good place to watch European football. The TVs are hooked up to sound and broadcast in HD. Whether you're looking for a good pint, good food or just to enjoy a football game, this is your place. And let Pieter know that Craig from Yelp sent you!

We've been in Irish Bars all over the world. This one is special. For one thing, it's clean. I mean *really* clean. It's really nicely furnished and decorated. The place has sort of an "upscale" ambiance, but retains the laid back feeling you expect from an Irish Pub. The food was terrific. We enjoyed large portions and the exceptional presentation. Prices were reasonable and the service was great. In short, this isn't your run of the mill Irish Pub. I absolutely recommend you check it out.

The place is free for all to visit, I guess they hope you're up for some drinks while enjoying the view. I've read reviews noting that the service is slow.. and that the drinks are expensive. But to be honest I experienced the total opposite. Service was fast friendly and the prices are modestly higher than normal.. you can't expect to get a view like this for free.. in most city's there's a queue and ticket booth for observatory decks. I had a chivas on the top, my favorite (8 euro, other whiskeys like jack go cheaper). The night was still young and the view was great. For everyone visiting Hasselt this is a must..
