We had a Jari pizza which was amazing, crispier crust than Neopolitan style that our group really enjoyed. Had two pastas as well that were both homemade and delicious. We're here four more nights won't be surprised if we make a return visit.

We arrived slightly early and were joyfully greeted by our host (possible owner?). He let us choose where we wanted to sit, and were happy to accommodate us wanting to sit outside. He and his female coworker went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, giving recommendations for food and wine, sharing the history of the town, even found a brochure of an artist whose piece we were admiring in the restaurant. The food and wine were delicious. We shared a cacio e pepe croquette-type appetizer with prosciutto and fig jam. So unique and delicious. We then had their gnocchi with pesto of the day-today being a black cabbage pesto, and wild boar ragu pappardelle. Again, both delicious. We finished with their tiramisu which was hands down my favorite since being in multiple areas of Italy for 2 weeks. All of the food was so fresh, unique, and extremely well priced. Along with the delicious meal, the kindness and engagement of the staff puts this restaurant above the rest. When I return to Italy this will be a priority stop for sure.

We had good to great experiences in all six restaurants we tried in the Cortona area, but we thought Castel Girardi was best for both food and venue. The steak with truffle sauce was one of the most memorable plates I've ever been served. Pastas and simple dishes such as Tuscan beans and Caprese salads were executed to perfection. The wine list presented outstanding value. The venue cannot be beat with a pleasant loggia and views of Lake Trasimeno beyond the Esse Valley. It is a multi-generational, family-run restaurant and they are very flexible and accommodating. As a bonus, they are open all afternoon, while all the other restaurants are closed from 2:00pm into the evening. We can't understand why Castel Girardi isn't higher rated on the dining websites. We place it #1.
