From the tables, to the plates, to the cups, to the decoration, the menu, to the bustling of bar maids and keeps it all steps you back in time. Tables lit with candles and cackles echo throughout the restaurant. If you close your eyes and think about all the movies based on this era, you found the most perfect replica. I walked in midday for a cider, I was unable to sit inside, not sure why, I wanted the darkest corner in the house for experiences purposes but they did find a wobbly table outside for me to plop. I say wobbly not because it was bad but because it was spot on for the whole experience. After a few icey (yes my cider had ice crystals from the cup being so cold), and some phenomenal watermelon/feta dish I left feeling giggly at the experience. I strongly recommend a reservation. Now I can skip the Renaissance Fair! Seriously, we enjoyed the atmosphere and the meal. Someone really knows how to cook. We had the Royal Feast plus the tempura asparagus, a bottle of wine and dessert. We enjoyed everything but the cod dish (we just don't love cod). We even had dessert and mead and paid less than 100 dollars US. Bargain! The service was pretty good. We had a longish wait before they took our order but after that everything rolled along. Reservations are definitely recommended as multiple folks were turned away while we were there. read more

A "can't miss" if you find yourself in Tomar. The restaurant is as authentic as you can get to a medieval dining experience. Candles on the tables are the only illumination. The excellent wait staff is in period clothing. The menu, as would be typical of the time, is heavy on meat and fish, however there are options for vegetarians as well. The wine list is fun. It's separated into class. We chose royalty and enjoyed one of the best bottles of wine ever. A few words of advice - don't go if you have a bad back - the patrons sit on wooden benches. And go hungry - like no breakfast or lunch that day hungry - the portions are huge. read more

Taverna Antiqua is a medieval themed restaurant located right beside Tomar Town Hall (Camara Municipal de Tomar). Seating is available either in the dining room or out at the front. The ambiance of the restaurant is cool. It is worth taking a look at how the bathroom was setup to fit with the theme. The dim lightning makes it a challenge to see what the food actually looks like; only after downloading the photos and adjusting the images exposure, I was able to see what the dishes I ordered really looked like. I started with frog legs; not recommended, as the frog legs were skinny, there was not much to eat, and it lacked flavor. For my main, I ordered the "Pernil de porco com castanhas e migas" (pork shank with chestnuts and crumbs); it was quite tasty and a generous serving; I believe I was only able to eat half of it. If you decide to give it a try, go for the experience, not the food. read more

Going to taverna antiqua is a cool experience. The whole place is decorated as in the Middle Ages (even the bathrooms, they are amazing) . They truly have an eye for detail. The food is also good, but not amazing. I had the deer and it was a good experience. read more

the decor and ambiance was good. the wine was also good for a house wine. we all liked our meals, I had the bacalhau do mercador, which was a very generous portion, quite "heavy" meal, but perfect for a winter day. I also had a soup and shared a polvo salad (octopus) and both were very good (soup was a bit cold). the only thing that really disappointed us was the very slow service. we were there for lunch and we were there a total of 2 hrs. A lot of waiting time to get our plates, and some people who arrived after us we served before us. Perhaps they forgot our order... in any case, they gave us 2 of our drinks for free to compensate, but the drinks were 1 euro each, which I felt was quite a small compensation in my opinion (could have given the beer as well, which was a bit more expensive...). So I think it's worth a visit for the quality of food and ambiance, but make sure you are not in a rush in case you get the same type of waiting time. read more

We were surprised by the creative and quality cuisine here. The theme was a bit over the top, but the service was friendly and everything held together: decor, attire, menu... I had the grilled perch which was delicate, fresh, and grilled to perfection. Many others ordered some sort of cod stuffed in bread. It looked yummy. The outdoor patio looked out over the square.
