Pimento and bacon on grilled toast

This is a diner vibe place. Super friendly service. The pimento and bacon is to die for! The onion rings were super crispy. All followd up with a custard concrete.

This was our 2nd visit to this restaurant. Our first visit was uneventful and forgettable. We sat out on the patio, which is a nice feature to have at a small restaurant out here in the middle of nowhere. The service was...homey. In that they love their regulars or since it's a small town they seemed to know everyone. Down side of that is that we aren't regulars and aren't from around here lol. We ordered nachos. They were...nothing to revisit for, (think movie theater nacho cheese) but since it was just nachos we figured we'd give them another go. Revisited last Friday with a friend from out of town. This time we sat inside and ordered actual food. Our friend disliked the atmosphere immediately but he's amicable and wanted to wait it out and see. The atmosphere that night was bustling and conservatively stuffy. They appeared to be hosting a large party. There were hor dourves laid out on the bar, that I doubt were for everyone, although we don't know because they weren't offered and no reference to them was made. The clientele all appeared to have just come from church, think large party and crying babies, all with a posh southern air about them. If you love khaki and pastel or plaid, you'll be right at home. If you don't enjoy people giving you the side eye if you happen to not wear pastel and khakis then you might be more comfortable elsewhere. Upon entering our friend made a bee line for the bar. He assumed since it looked so crowded that there would be a wait to be seated, so he wanted to get the festivities rolling before we sat down. He was informed brusquely, that he couldn't order a drink at the bar until he'd been seated. Say wha? Um, why do you have seating at the bar? So peevishly he came back to us where we were already being seated. He was delighted to find that although they wouldn't serve him from the bar, that upon sitting they had already made his drink and had brought it over. Slight redemption there. Hubby and I both also got mixed drinks. Meh, they were fine. Mine was supposed to be a "blue dolphin martini" I believe but it tasted like a blue motorcycle in a martini class with extra blue curacao. The service was incredibly slow. Granted they seated us quickly and we thought that seemed promising but it wasn't. They needed more staff to accommodate the large party and friday dinner crowd they had going on. Our waitress was pleasant but hurried and pretty MIA. It took at least 20 minutes just to order. Overall when we finally did get our food it was pretty good. I was surprised and not expecting much after the nachos we'd had before. I got crab cakes and mashed potatoes. While not bad and completely inoffensive were forgettable. Husband got a burger that he enjoyed and our friend got a steak. No one had any complaints about the food. At the end of the day, the food was pretty good. The drinks were ok. The service was lacking but earnest. And the atmosphere will appeal to some but definitely not others. Seems universal that the service seems to be an issue in the reviews, so i would only recommend this place if you've got time to kill and don't mind paying too much for a long drawn out albeit forgettable leisurely meal. The venue itself lends itself to kind of a date night feel, so I might return under those conditions but sit outside away from the crying babies and church crowd.

We randomly chose this place versus another Mexican restaurant in Roanoke Rapids 40 more minutes away. We were pleasantly surprised with the selection, service, and how fast our food was prepared and served hot. For starters they give you chips and salsa like most other Mexican restaurants. I'd rate the salsa 3/5 stars...more onion and cilantro please. However, they go the extra mile and give you queso with the chips and salsa. It's not your typical queso either, it's queso with creamed cheese in it giving it some extra flavor versus plain quesos. I got the lunch quesadilla fajitas with beef and it was tasty. Not really a pickup and eat type of meal especially after I piled on the guac, sour cream, and lettuce. It was crispy, hot and delicious. Perfect serving size for lunch. My girlfriend got the lunch fajitas. They came out sizzling hot in a small cast iron pan. Probably half the size of the dinner portion if I had to guess. Again, the perfect amount for lunch. She ate it with just the rice and beans to make it gluten-free as it was served with flour tortillas. The corn chips did not give her any problems either. All in all it was a fast stop in a small town. It was very inexpensive as well. When we were leaving a sweet old man in his Sunday best came over to look at our bikes and chat us up about the "Jap" bikes he used to ride back in the day. So not only was the staff friendly but the townspeople as well! Would definitely stop here again.

There were new Mexican dishes there that I had never seen before on menus from other Mexican restaurants. Our server, Carlos, was so nice and helpful. There was nothing at all to complain about. The…read morerestaurant was very clean and dressed as if it was a fancy restaurant, although the food wasn't necessarily fancy. I'm not sure how many cooks were back there but the food took a very very long time to come out for our party of five. There was also no one else in the restaurant at the time we ordered. Besides that though, our waitress was super nice and refills came often. The salad bar was a highlight of our expierence here. You got to choose from different types of lettuce, toppings and even macaroni salad. The only downfall is that it was just one trip allowed. You really have to load it up in the tiny bowls they give you. As for the hush puppies, they were hot and fresh. The portion was alright but definitely could've used some more for a party of our size. Great for 2-3 people tho. The butter it came with paired very well and added a nice creamyness to the soft inside of the appetizer. I would say this was another highlight. As for my food, the seared oysters were very salty. They tasted like they were fresh out of the Atlantic. I think some more seasoning to balance it out would have helped. The shrimp was okay, nothing spectacular. The scallops were probably the best out of the three I got. They melted in your mouth and were seasoned generously. As for my side of green beans, they were actually excellent. They weren't some fancy green bean that you don't like, they were buttery and soft like a traditional southern green bean. I loved them so much. As for my girlfriends dish, her clam strips were excellent. Everything you want in a bite sized snack dish. The fries were okay, nothing to die for in my opinion. The crab cakes were okay, the inside had a lot of flavor and they were nicely sized. The crispy outside added a nice bite to it as well. The thing holding be back from giving it five starts is one, the wait time to get our food, and two the price. The price is really high especially for the amount of food you get. My dish alone was 28 dollars and I left the restaurant still hungry. The quality was 7/10 but I didn't quite understand the fancyness of the restaurant. The only thing that matched that vibe was the small portions. I think I would give John's a try again if I was in the area and I think it's something to try. Her grandparents said they have the best seafood in town and although it was good, the price is holding it back for me. I would recommend you try it yourself though.

I have been quite naughty, and a good bit delinquent, on updating my review from 11 years ago?!…read more Sheesh, sorry about that! If you happen to pass through this quant well appointed town, and have a hankering for yummy Chinese food which boasts no use of MSG, then China Garden is your place! They have been around for many years, and are better than all the Chinese places in Ahoskie, NC as well as Franklin, VA (nearby towns on either side of Murfreesboro). All to say, we have tried so many of their dishes and have not ever been disappointed. To me that speaks volumes in and of itself! We typically order early or late lunch (to avoid the rush) and order all chicken lo mein (and minus the side of fried rice so as to get a larger lunch portion of only the chicken lo mein...which is one of my fav go to dishes). Their general tso has larger fried chicken type chunks for the dinner order vs the harder chicken popper style they use for lunch (both equally saucy of coarse). At our house its a 50/50 split on who likes which General Tso's style best...but as for me, I am the dinner style vote (just in case you were wondering). ;) The place is always clean and inviting. The prices are comparable to most of the other eateries nearby. The staff are always friendly, and are quick to prepare our orders both in "eat in" or "to go". This is just kinda our go to Chinese place for many years now, and am so grateful for all they do daily in serving up wonderful Chinese food for all us locals, and for those of you who happen to mosey on by and want to enjoy and savor a slower pace of life (even if for just a quick bite to eat). It truly is small town living at its best...but I guess you could say I'm a little bit biased, since I have lived near this area for 18 years and counting.
