Kebabs are among my all-time favorite foods - plain and simple. Having spent years of my youth in Germany and extensive time in London, it always baffles me that it's taken so long for this world renowned quick bite to properly reach the United States. With that in mind, I had sky high expectations upon arriving in Istanbul, and while there are multiple kebab stands on every street corner, I came to realize that the quantity is such that the quality often suffers. Tatseven is certainly among the better options in the city, and their size, location, menu and prices are commendable, but don't expect what you might be used to elsewhere in Europe or the UK.
Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
Tatseven's location truly can't be beat. A stone's throw from the Bosphorus and mere meters away from the Yeni Cami, there's significant real estate here that can handle any group even during the peak of the tourist season. Server's are friendly if not a bit aggressive and your meal, regardless of what you get, will come out quickly. The real attraction here is the "kitchen", where you've got the largest spit I've ever seen spinning around next to what must be 30 chickens going at once. Truly a sight to behold. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
My doner kebab plate was sizable as you'll see in the picture, with a hearty portion of meat and some sides that were actually really really good. The price? 16 turkish lira, which is almost exactly $USD 6.00. That's not as cheap as elsewhere in the city, but it's damn cheap. Significant value. Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
Good? Yes, but honestly not great. The meat was a bit overcooked, and the result was more thin and overly crispy pieces than the succulent and hearty strips that typically come about after it's freshly shaved off the spit. Flavor was decent, but there was quite a bit of grease in the equation and some particularly greasy sides as well. Certainly a bit of room for improvement. Single Star Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
I'd recommend Tatseven to a tourist in a heartbeat strictly based on it's location, size, and breadth of menu, but this isn't the best kebab you'll ever have in Istanbul, Turkey, or elsewhere. No Star Granted. read more
