Taxes were a struggle with this company. They missed appointments we made, were difficult to get on the phone, and never called or emailed us when they said they would. By the time my family got our taxes done, the payment voucher didn't match the number on the tax return but none of them checked that. They said it was our responsibility to check that so they are not at fault even though it caused me to have to pay a second payment to the State Comptroller to finish paying taxes. We filled out a form 2553 with them to change the business filing, but have not gotten any confirmation that that was ever sent out. When I called to complain, they said they do not give refunds but would give a discount on future filings. I wouldn't let them do my taxes for free, so no discount will ever be enough. When you pay hundreds of dollars to make sure a complex tax return is completed, correct, and handled it is very frustrating to then find out so many things are missed after the fact. read more

I was a long time (11 yrs plus) customer of Tate taxes until I received a letter from the IRS stating I owe over $8,000 due to Tate not filing all of my documents I gave them to file for my 2022 taxes. Once I received the letter I contacted their office and they told me to email the letter to them. Once I emailed the letter they never responded to the email and would not take any of my phone calls. I called them numerous times only to be told that Phil Bryant, the owner would call me back. He never called me back and never emailed me back. This company is very unprofessional and doesn't care about their customers. Once they get your money they are not going to help if something is wrong with your taxes. This a warning to use at your own RISK!! I will never use se them AGAIN!! I would give zero stars if I could! read more

I have been going to Tate's Tax service ever since I had a job. I love their professionalism and also how family oriented they are. This has been a family business for many years and generations. I have referred so many of my friends and till this day they still go to Tate's for their taxes. They handle the most difficult cases. Their office is opened from Monday - Saturday during tax season. I believe they take walk ins but I always make an appt. Even though I live in VA, I make the drive to MD because it is worth it to me and because of so much history. I consider them like family as well since they are so genuine and welcoming. They are located near the Redskins stadium. Their building is attached to other businesses and they have plenty of free parking. I def recommend them! read more

This is the most unprofessional business I have ever used. As an African American, I try to patronize black-owned businesses, but this tax firm leaves such a bad taste in your mouth. They are a disgrace to all the other professional, black-owned businesses that provide excellent service. Last year, Sherrie did my taxes. She failed to calculate my capital gains taxes, which left me owing over $21,000 in federal taxes. (Initially, I was getting a refund.) When I pointed out to her that I thought my taxes were incorrectly filed and that I should have incurred capital gains taxes after selling a second home, she stated, "Let me check with my girlfriend who works for the IRS." When I had a follow-up meeting with her, and she acknowledged that she should have included the proceeds from the sale of that home as income, her explanation was, "They changed the rules." What? If the rules were changed, it's her responsibility to stay abreast of them. Trying to reach her is like trying to get the President of the United States on the phone. It's virtually impossible! She tells you to call but she doesn't return calls. She tells you to email her and mark your message as "important" so she can quickly respond, and she doesn't respond. This firm's customer service or lack thereof is appauling. My advice to anyone looking for a tax firm: STAY AWAY! SPEND YOUR MONEY WHERE YOU WILL BE TREATED LIKE A HUMAN BEING! read more

If I could give this business NO stars, I would. I love giving positive reviews but unfortunately that's not the case for this one. We scheduled an appointment for 4:30pm and didn't get called back to start our taxes until 7pm. It's tax season, which is understandable, but this place clearly doesn't have enough staff. What's the point of making an appointment??? After that, a male, middle aged, also in the Army (didn't get his name) started entering our information into the system WRONG. He asked my husband for his birth date then later asked for mine then said "oh wow, you guys are born in the same month -but we're not. Then entered our bank information incorrectly after repeating it three times to him. I got the impression that he was either too tired, or just not focused. After entering our information, he tells us Sherry will finish us off. WHAT?! So, we wait another 25 minutes for her to come in (after seeing people who work there across the way sitting around in a lounge area talking, eating, and laughing). She had decent customer service and things ran pretty smoothly after this and we left around 8:15pm. Sherry told me to contact her regarding a W2 that needed to be fixed. So, it took 3 hours and 45 minutes WITH an appointment. After getting the W2 corrected, it was nearly impossible to get ahold of Sherry. I called 6 times and was told each time she would call me back and she never would. By the 7th time, I was transferred immediately to her and she said she would enter my new w2 in the next day and email me the new one. A week goes by, didn't hear from her still. So I call back. Again, couldn't get a hold of her. Finally did after days of calling and she told me she never got the chance and told me ANOTHER date that she'd have it in by. Two weeks goes by after that and didn't hear from her. Same story. I call, can't get a hold of her. The lady at the front desk schedules a phone appointment so I can "for sure get called back". My appointment day passes and I call and I get a hold of her finally and I'm upset because she promised me a date TWICE. She promised me she would call me he next day, at noon, to enter everything in and told me they were busy. Not my problem. Noon passes and I finally get a call around 4 that she sent me the new document to be signed. I go to check once I'm off work and it's INCORRECT. And I've yet to hear from her or the business. SO, I have to go somewhere else and pay money again to have my taxes straightened out. I do not recommend this business. I paid $250 and now have to pay AGAIN to get them done. Horrible service, rude customer service. Was set to see 1 person with an appointment made and seen someone else who didn't get to know my situation nor talk to me to see if I own a business or anything. Asked over phone for price was advised it depends on person and when got to speak to someone it was only to receive my payment. I could've done my own taxes they completely blew me! Horrible just horrible service I complained to owner and he hasn't reached out to take my concerns seriously. I recommend finding someone else or save your money and do your own! read more
