I am that rare bird who actually likes museum food. It's super easy for a museum cafe to serve you inferior food due to the fact your a captive audience. The Chicago Museum of Art cafe revolutionized the way people look at eating lunch or snacking at a museum. Thus the Tate Modern held up my rather high bar for museum cuisine. I had a very tasty chicken club sandwich with chips (English fries). It was a bountiful sandwich so I was assured I could spend endless hours looking at really beautiful art and not have to worry about what me or my family was going to do for dinner. My wife and one of my sons had chicken Caesar salads which they both devoured. My other son had a portobello mushroom sandwich which he ate ever so slow. A sure sign he was enjoying it. On a side note, I had one of the better colas I've ever drank: Fentiman's Botanically Brewed Curiosity Cola. Yum is all I can say about this beverage. Such a cool museum! So much to see within the regular collection plus the visiting exhibitions. The infinity rooms were incredible. Just going into the museum was amazing--- this huge space and now hanging from the ceiling huge draping compilations by El Anitsui are amazing! Meandering amongst the fabulous art at the Tate Modern, we stopped for a bite at their 2nd floor cafe. A great view of the Thames with some yummy sandwiches and drink. We got the egg sandwich and the feta curry rocket sandwich. Flavorful, not too dry or soggy, and filling. I washed it down with a Big Drop alcohol free lager and we continued on our merry way. To sustain ourselves before checking out the plethora of exhibitions at the Tate Modern, we nipped into the cafe in the Natalie Bell building's top floor, for some lunch. The cafe has a bar area, with light nibbles, but we decided to head for the sit down area and get table service. We'd come just a few minutes before lunch, and the place got packed pretty soon, and we saw quite a few folks having to get in line to get a table. So timing to get a table here at lunch time is critical! The menu items we ordered were: 1) Fish and chips (£15.95) which came with mushy peas. My fish was an absolute let down - I had so many scales! I wish had spoken up and said something to our server cause I left majority of it on the plate. Chips were okay, and wanted a bit more generous serving of the tartar sauce. 2) Pan fried Sea Bass (£16.00) which came with fabulous vegetables - lovely parsnips and broccolini, along with pine nuts and a great sauce. This was a winning dish, and honestly the better option from our menu choices. Our lunch was also accompanied by a cider + hot chocolate for drinks, and then closed with the Creme Brûlée. 3) BENSONS 'Eccentric English Cider' with raspberry and lime (£6.95) - this was a massive bottle and too much for me, albeit refreshing tart. 4) Hot chocolate (£3.35) was warm, but didnt like the taste of the chocolate used. 5) Creme Brûlée (£6.50) was okay - nothing majorly spectacular. Cost was €55 (rounded up, and including a 12.5% service charge or tip), which I thought was pretty expensive. However at least the food did the job of sustaining us, as we spent the next 6 hrs wandering around the museum! There are certain things that happen when you date a picky eater. At the Tate Modern Cafe, I watched Matt B. gag on a cheeseburger patty. Instead of sending back the order, he asked me to eat as much of it as I could to save him the embarrassment of leaving most of his food on the plate. Of course, it is not on Tate Modern that my boyfriend can't eat onions. My food was okay, and but for that unpleasantness, the cafe was mostly fine. There was a tiny bit of a line and seating was relatively cramped, but the space was cute with a great view through large windows. Service was slow and a little hard to get hold of, but I suppose the place was busy. For my lunch I ordered the Catalan tomato bread with smoked anchovies and the potted salmon with cucumber salad, dill butter, and toasted sourdough. The bread with anchovies was great, very full-flavored and savory. I liked the salt of the anchovies and the way the bread soaked up the tomato spread and oil. I was less enthusiastic about the potted salmon. I've had salmon rillettes a number of times, and this version was unappetizing, with a visible layer of yellow lard. The cucumbers were also smothered in dressing. As mentioned above, Matt ordered the burger. This was a char-grilled Aberdeen Angus beef burger, advertised with tomato relish. Matt ordered it completely and emphatically plain, with the addition of Caerphilly cheese. It came as ordered, which was why he didn't send it back even when he discovered he couldn't stomach more than a couple of bites. I have to say, though, that he wasn't missing much. I liked the tomato relish, which he got on the side, but the patty was pretty mushy. A side of chips, or as we call them, fries, was not good at all. It was thick and pasty, and worse, cost £2.85. That made the burger and fries that we did not eat come out to a whopping £14.35. I'm tempted to give two stars to this cafe, but I suspect that I'm biased by the joylessness of our lunch. Much of the menu looked decent, and I wouldn't mind trying the place out again. Just, with caution, next time. read more

So beautiful! After walking around the museum for a couple hours, we trekked back here after admiring it earlier. You get such a beautiful view out looking toward St. Paul's Cathedral--wish we hadn't eaten lunch already so we could have properly experienced it all. Instead, we just got a glass of house rosé and an orange polenta cake to share. Tasted great! A little bit pricey, but expected. The space is modern, open and airy. Large glass window provide a view outside. The service was fine, considering it was not at all busy, this was expected. The food seemed to be hit or miss. I had a slice of quiche that was good, cooked well. While not the best I have had, no complaints. My cousin had Cesar salad with chicken. The portion was huge, but a majority was a pile of lettuce with too much dressing. The worst part was the chicken. The slices appeared to be precooked for a different meal and had a distinctive and odd flavor. No at our table liked them and sadly a majority of the did not ended up being left. My other cousin had the burger. He was expecting more from the tomato relish. He said it was fine, but not a great burger. The Cafe was also pretty pricey. The menu seemed limited. They do a other snacks as well as coffee or tea. I would not recommend coming for a meal but it seems to be a good place to take a break after the museum. read more

I wonder is Tate is short for Tater which is short for potato. What do you think? Hot potato, hot potato who's got the hot potato? The Tate modern cafe served as a lovely respite from the cold one nippy day when the chill was grabbing at me like seaweed at the bottom of a lake. Ugh. My friend and I went in to hot drinks. We had tea. T is for Tobago, but T is also for Trampoline. Oh, and for Tate. The tea was lovely, high quality stuff is those pretty, silken triangular patches that, if you put 100 side by side, would probably look like a mountain range or the back of a stegosaurus. It was very nice tea. They also had very nice juices and foodstuffs. As the cafe/takeout area was full, we asked if we could sit in the restaurant area.. The staff was kind enough to arrange some seats for us at the bar. This provided us with front row seats to stare at the chefs in the kitchen as they ground beef and made pasta. Fascinating stuff, and fortunately, unlike Seaword, these front row seats had no 'danger splash zone' stipulations. Bright colors on the staff t-shirts and on the walls contrasted with the black and glass of the rest of the eatery. Of course, the prices are a bit jacked up in a museum-cafe sort of way (fitting as it is a museum cafe), but it's a good place for coffee and tea. The food is probably good too. Fortunately the food and drink doesn't follow the flow of the current exhibitions. No big square of gellified broccoli or food-colored polenta a la Rothko. read more

The food here average at best, mostly sandwiches and salads of the pre packed variety. There is a lot of seating and free wifi, but the prices are a tad high for what you get. The coffee is average, nothing spectacular but is sufficient for a simple caffeine fix. Before you enter Tate they check your bags, even for just the cafe, but there is a locker room downstairs. Be aware that it only accepts the old pound coin and not the new one. Overall, spacious but mediocre food and standard service. read more

I work locally and so decided to pop in for lunch. I had the Angus beefburger, held off on the fries but had a green salad instead.Overall the cafe is very pleasant, attentive staff and speedy service. Very good americano coffee here! On the downside, it is quite expensive at £10.25 for an angus burger that would cost 99p from waitrose. I know i am being served and I know that every business has overheads but for a quick work lunch i feel it was a little steep. I will go back but for a more of a treat than out of need to quell my hunger. read more

Even if you're not a fan of modern art, here's a reason to head to the Tate Modern. Although the interior is on the austere side, the food is generous and the service (mostly) on-point. For a museum cafe, it's excellent. The lighter options were the best: velvety squash and tomato soup, and satisfying veggie tart. The burger is heartier, although it won't impress Americans. The fish and chips almost overflowed the plate, moist on the inside and greaseless outside. It also provided out first taste of mushy peas, which we agreed was oddly intriguing. The waitstaff is efficient and kind. The host, however, was absolutely in the weeds, struggling to match potential diners with empty tables. He's not emblematic of the whole enterprise, which is quite welcoming. Maybe he was having a bad day, or maybe the art upstairs was finally getting to him. read more

Love this place. It's a cute little modern cafe, that is consistent with the look of the rest of the modern museum. Makes for a good place to break after wandering in the museum til your feet hurt. Service was surprisingly consistent, with servers checking on us on occasion, but not too frequently. My friend and I shared the mushroom soup. Probably the BEST mushroom soup I've ever had. I will never look at Campbell's the same way again :). I also had the beetroot on a pastry shell, topped with a dollop of goat cheese. I never knew what a great combination beetroot and goat was. However, it was too much beets for me, since I'm not the biggest fan, although willing to try different things. Beet lovers would definitely enjoy this though. it's not exactly cheap, but apparently all the profit go to the museum anyway, so that makes me feel better. Now I do enjoy the tate modern, but on this occasion my experience of this intriguing building was not the art, moreover the food. I met an friend for brunch and after walking along SouthBank we decided on the Tate Modern Cafe to sit outside, soak up the rays and discuss our respective lives. The cafe is well laid out with a lovely suntrap area outside to soak up the serenity that Sunday mornings always seem to bring. I sampled a sausage and caramelised onion baguette, which was pleasant if a little bit tough to eat (the bread that is, not the act of eating!) My friend decided to obey her sweet tooth and enjoyed one of the appetising pastries that were provided, all washed down with some classic English Breakfast tea. Nothing to rave about but certainly pleasant and fairly reasonably priced. The bonus came with the sun, the calm atmosphere and the feeling that even though we weren't looking at the art, we were being suitable cultural for a Sunday morning. The Tate's cafe is an absolutely perfect way to cap off a trip to the museum. Sitting inside the enclosure, looking out over the Thames suddenly puts things in perspective, and you can tune out all of the tourists, art snobs, and crazies over a simple cuppa and a relaxing view. read more

A little pricey but the food is always fresh, innovative and excellent! The views of the Thames are fantastic but top marks go to their consistently excellent coffee. They use illy, which is a really good brand, but sometimes even that can be messed up by a inexperienced barista. However, their cappucinos are up there with the best outside of Italy! read more

If you go right into the restaurant, you miss the best part of the place - the views! For this, go into the cafe and take a seat directly facing the river. Nicely located on the third floor, exactly when your legs are tired from walking around the top floor galleries. A little sparse on chairs (most of which are occupied by men in contrast elbow jacket typing away on their MacBooks), a decent selection of sandwiches and cakes and a good selection of craft beers. Several boutique teas, but limited wine options in plastic cups. The main draw however is of course tee spectacular views from the spacious balcony, giving views across the Thames towards St. Paul's and onto the concourse below where soothing ambient reggae can be heard. After going through the spectacular galleries at the Tate Modern, my family of four decided to dine at the cafe downstairs. We would not recommend others do the same. Our waitress was less than gracious and the food was mediocre. We were given childrens' menus for our children only to be told when we were ordering a children's dish that the portions were really for toddlers. (Why then were we given the children's menus we asked. Because, said our waitress, we are in a museum and the kid's menu has room for coloring.) Most importantly, our son has a nut allergy and after being told that the vegetable soup was nut free, he ate a few bites only to then be told that the soup had nuts. (In the end our waitress checked again and there were no nuts.) Bottom line - about 55pounds for mediocre food and terrible service. Never again. read more
