Depending on where you're from, pasties can border on a religious experience. And more often than…read morenot, I suspect it's nostalgia--not flavor--that does the heavy lifting. Let's be honest: there isn't much going on in a pasty beyond some humble, comforting ingredients. Hopefully served with love. At Taste of the UPP, that's definitely the case. The pasties are huge, the ingredients are spot-on, and if you're lucky enough to buy one in person--from the very women who make them--you'll see it's not just love they're made with. It's pride.

We enjoyed the pasties!…read more This is Pasty review update, 9 years later. Today, we ordered 4 Beef Pasties and 2 large servings of Beef Gravy. What we loved: - The size of the pasties are HUGE. Maybe bigger than 9 years ago - The pasties tasted great - The Beef Gravy really carried the meal What we feel could be improved upon: - More beef. We split a Beef Pasty tonight and it had 5 pieces of beef in it Looking at the picture of my Beef Pasty from 9 years ago, the beef peices were smaller and seemingly more abundant, whereas tonight's beef pieces were larger and fewer. My guess is that the weight of the beef today may be comparable to the weight 9 years ago but that the beef isn't broken down as much. In conclusion, we still very much enjoyed the Beef Pasty, and LOVED the Beef Gravy and we have 3 more to eat later.

King's Fish Market - Lightly fried whitefish and walleye!

Stopped in for lunch on a whim and we were all highly impressed…read more The smoked whitefish spread was more like a whitefish salad, which I LOVED. Piled it on bread the next day and was very happy. Smoked whitefish chowder was homemade with love and care and I would drink this by the gallon. Whitefish and walleye baskets were to die for. And the whitefish sandwich was as amazing as you'd expect. Bonus: the fries that came with the sandwich and baskets were also utterly delicious. Cannot say enough good things about this place. I will definitely make this a regular stop coming in and out of the UP and plan better so that I can take more home from here next time. Big thanks to the wonderful staff for their hospitality and pride in their food.

While we found this to be a charming local fish and specialty market, we were unfortunately underwhelmed by the food. Most of us ordered the 2-piece whitefish basket with fries. The fish itself seemed fresh, but the batter lacked seasoning and could have been much crispier. The fries were also fairly soggy. We also tried the whitefish chowder, which desperately needed salt. Adding a bit ourselves made a huge difference in flavor. We arrived well before the lunch rush and practically had the place to ourselves, so perhaps this was just an off day. Still, the fish baskets felt severely under-fried and lacking overall flavor, which was disappointing given the local reputation and specialty focus.

The outside baked crust is crisp and tasty. My husband's beef pastie was filled with beef, similar to other posters pictures and he really enjoyed his. Everything was hot too I have a tough time eating beef so opted for the chicken option and while my sandwich was tasty, it was truly 95% potato, a tiny bit of carrots and just very, very little chicken. Maybe I got the bottom of the bowl or something, but it definitely needed more protein. He did have a veggie option available today as well. This place is super popular spot and the sandwiches are $8.50 each, we ordered a gravy, as per other Yelp recommendations and we shared that. It was an additional two dollars. He gives you a lot gravy!! Parking is very limited out front, but we found people were in and out pretty quick. There are a couple picnic tables where you can sit and eat but honestly, he really just doesn't have the room for that so get it to go. The owner seems super friendly, and I love the fact that so many people are supporting his business. Another UP box checked!

But compositely, the Vite, the heft, the peppery flavor, it's very satisfying for me. No nonsense store. Across from Shepler's ferry!
