The Montessori approach at this school is nicely implemented, with a good balance of structure and play integrated throughout the day. There is a strong academic foundation while still allowing children the freedom to explore their creativity, build independence, and develop a genuine love of learning. The directors, teachers and staff are attentive and highly invested in each child's growth and development. In addition to academics, BHM offers an impressive variety of extracurricular opportunities, including sports, dance, art (and many more), which enrich the overall experience. Their curriculum also does a wonderful job fostering multicultural awareness which we really appreciated. In addition, the facilities and play spaces were consistently clean, well maintained and organized, which gave us great peace of mind every day. We saw tremendous growth in both of our children in the time they spent at BHM. They felt happy, supported and excited to learn every day. We would highly recommend BHM to any family looking for a well-rounded Montessori program.

My daughter attended Blackhawk Montessori from February 2025 - August 2025. We had to choose a…read moreschool quickly due to a short-notice move, and I appreciated that this school was quieter than others we toured (my daughter was sensitive to loud noise) and that it was close to our rental. During the first month, the directors consistently told us at drop-off that she was doing well. However, about a month in, we received a note in her backpack from a classroom teacher indicating that she had been struggling with distraction and listening since the beginning. I wish we had been given more honest and timely feedback from the start from the directors, as that mismatch felt misleading. At a formal parent-teacher conference two months in, we were encouraged to have her assessed for support through SRVUSD, as they felt she wouldn't be successful in an academic environment without extra help. We took this seriously and ultimately enrolled her in TK in our school district starting August 2025, where she underwent a full 60-day assessment. The results showed no learning concerns, and her TK teachers report that she's doing very well and is easily redirected when distracted. We had similar positive feedback from the after-school childcare team. After this experience, I spoke with three other moms that were in my daughter's Blackhawk Montessori classroom and learned their children had also received feedback around concerns with focus, excessive talking, or other similar behaviors. I think the school has expectations that may not align with typical child development, which can lead to excessive negative attention. That said, there were aspects I appreciated: - I liked Ms. Tania, one of the two main teachers in my daughter's pre-K classroom. She seemed balanced and firm, while also kind. My daughter liked her. - The school offered several paid enrichment programs (gymnastics, singing, soccer, dance, etc.), which my daughter consistently looked forward to. - As a full-time working single mom, I appreciated the longer care hours offered. There were also significant concerns: - The concerns with transparency and unrealistic expectations/negative attention noted earlier in the review. - My daughter reported that the other main pre-K teacher was "mean," especially toward the end of her time there when that teacher ran the smaller second summer session. Even nearly five months after leaving Blackhawk Montessori, my daughter still mentions that teacher and says she never wants to return, which is upsetting. - In retrospect, the six-hour school day (before childcare) was too long for her. She's done much better with the 3.5-hour school days that SRVUSD offers for TK/K kids. Overall, I've learned that my child does best in a warmer, more teacher-led environment. While Blackhawk Montessori had some positives, it was not a good fit for her, and she has done significantly better in both the schools she attended before and after her time here.

Our daughter spent nearly 3 years here and loved every minute of it. - The teachers are warm, loving and kind. The teachers are well qualified, have experience and low turnover rate! - The school is one of the most diverse we've seen in the 10+ schools we've toured. - Low student to teacher ratio (48 kids to 7-8 teachers) - Facilities are clean and they have access to the indoor ballet studio (for their extremely hot or rainy days) for indoor play. They also have an indoor structure and outdoor space during recess. - They are more academic than some preschools (in a good way), they work with each child at their level and keep detail logs of where each child is at. Our child did really well with this method and she's at least 1-2 years ahead in reading and math. - They do STEAM and bring in outside community sources and parents to demonstrate different occupations (ie police, firefighters, doctors etc). They get plenty of arts and crafts throughout the day and lots of play time as well. - They foster kids to be independent and allow them to do things on their own. - You provide lunch, the school provides 2 healthy snacks - am and pm. Our experience is not unique, many families that we are still in touch with have all felt the same way about this school. Many of us came from other preschools and appreciate all the love and care they provide to all of our kids.

This was my daughter's first experience being away from me and after only one day going School she fell in love with it. My daughter woke up every morning excited to go to school and sad to leave. She would count down the days when school was closed and ask me to wake her up early when the break was over. While my daughter quickly learned how to spell her name and read, in my opinion, what I appreciated the most was the life skills she gained. My daughter was taught kindness, honesty, giving back to the less fortunate and how important it is to respect all cultures and people. The owner Kelley is truly a gift. She has created a family dynamic on campus that is felt in every class. She is present on campus, connected with all parents and students and she staffs her school with the most amazing group of educators that truly love your children as their own. Our 4 year old son started at LAPMS last summer and the transition was extremely smooth for him…read more He had gone to another montessori school before we moved to Danville so he adjusted well due to this but his three teachers at LAPMS were all so warm, loving, and caring. Academically, they had them work on a simple book report every week in order to start introducing the concept of homework to them, they also used Kindergarten-level math books so my son was already doing addition and subtraction problems in the 12s and 13s by the end of the year. Additionally, my son's reading skills drastically improved while at LAPMS due to the teachers adjusting the reading materials and worksheets to match each child's different reading level. Now, my son has graduated from LAPMS and attends Kindergarten at one of the SRVUSD elementary schools and he whips through the homework assignments and continues to excel in reading. I truly feel that my son's teachers set him up for success for Kindergarten and I am truly grateful for the school. When my son recently ran into his former LAPMS teacher, the teacher embraced my son and was so genuinely happy to see him again. You could just see how much they care about each child. We now have our 2 year old enrolled at LAPMS and after about a month of some tears and a transitioning phase, he also now loves going to school. His 3 teachers also are always so loving, extremely patient and warm individuals. I have never seen them lose their patience even with a room full of toddlers! I also have asked them to adjust our son's napping schedule and they have always been very accommodating and willing to make changes as needed. They also diligently provide updates on diaper changes, nap times and photos of activities throughout the day. Something I also noticed about the LAPMS staff is that I see teachers from other classrooms help in other classrooms as needed even if it's just for a short amount of time and they always do it with a smile. I feel this shows the camaraderie between the staff where they have the same goal to support and care for all students at LAPMS and they do it as a united team. I usually don't post reviews on Yelp but felt compelled to do so for LAPMS because of the very positive experience we've had. Thank you LAPMS Danville staff!

We visited many other schools, but none of them made us feel like our child's happiness and safety were truly the priority. Many were Montessori programs with rigid classroom settings and rules that we felt were unnecessary for kids at this age. The family-run team at DHCS has always made us feel like partners in raising our daughter. Communication has been great and it's clear they really know each child individually. They've been flexible with schedule changes and even welcomed us back without requiring re-enrollment when we briefly tried a school closer to home after our second child was born. We continue to do the 30-minute drive each way because of how much benefit we've seen this school provide to our daughter. Over the years we've seen our daughter become more confident, social, and excited about learning, which has been wonderful to watch. They teach the kids about different holidays and cultures and always find a reason to celebrate. We also really appreciate how diverse the student body and teachers are, which helps create a welcoming environment where kids are exposed to many different backgrounds. They're not the cheapest school and not the most expensive, but for us it has absolutely been worth it. Every concern or piece of feedback we've provided has always been taken with great care and met with a professional, non-defensive attitude. A huge added bonus is the location -- the police station is right next door, which gives us extra peace of mind as parents. They also have a giant playground with all kinds of outdoor activities for the kids, and they strongly encourage outside play. The only downside is that they don't have a third location in Castro Valley or Hayward. One can dream... hint hint, Miss Angie and Miss Coco :)
