It is hard not to miss these yellow buildings when driving down the I-5 in San Diego. I have a…read morepersonal connection to MCRD San Diego because I recently had two family members go through boot camp. I come from a military family and have always had a deep appreciation for our military. It is such an honor and special moment to attend graduation here after not seeing or talking to your loved one for three months. Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego was built in 1919 and is located right next to San Diego International Airport (the other recruiting base is in Parris Island, South Carolina). MCRD is also home to a Drill Instructor's School and at times will house members of the U.S. Coast Guard. Thousands of Marine recruits are trained here each year. Those that enlist go through a thirteen-week training process in which the recruits are cut off from civilian world and must adapt to Marine Corps lifestyle. Towards the end of the training period, recruits are taken offsite for field training and must pass the 54-hour simulated combat exercise called the Crucible. After passing, they are officially Marines and can attend graduation. Even though it can be hard for a parent to let go of their child, they do some things for the parents to help with the detachment process. The recruits are not allowed to have cellphones or make contact with family, but they can write and receive letters. During boot camp, I always kept the training matrix hanging on my wall so that I would know what training exercise they were doing each week. They also have a Facebook group page where they will post photos of each company's training exercises. Graduation day is a special weekend when parents can have dinner at the Bay View Restaurant and meet their child's drill instructor. Then families are able to watch their new Marine march on the parade deck and see them for the first time. There is also a museum here at MCRD San Diego that focuses on the history of the Marine Corps. I enjoyed walking through it and checking out all of the different galleries and exhibits.

Save your hard-earned money and look elsewhere…read more This place is advertised as "Base Lodging," but that's misleading--it's essentially two barracks rooms awkwardly connected. The moment I stepped in, I was greeted by dirt and sticky surfaces that made it clear cleanliness was not a priority. Everything in the room looked like it was trapped in 1985: a tiny, outdated TV, worn-out furniture, dingy carpets, and clocks that belong in a thrift store. There were exactly two USB ports in the room, and unsurprisingly, neither of them worked. If you're expecting modern amenities, you'll be sorely disappointed. Housekeeping? More like no-keeping. The civilian cleaning staff barely did anything. The shower was a disaster--the head was sticky, and there were long black hairs stuck to the ceiling and tiles, a surefire sign of carelessness. The toilet seal was leaking, adding to the room's overall neglected condition. The courtyards added to the experience, and not in a good way. You see, Marines frequent the area, and let's just say they don't keep it quiet. My nights were filled with the sounds of Marines doing Marine things--talking, singing, taking loud bathroom trips, and other shenanigans that echoed through the night. The thin walls made it impossible to escape the noise. If you want rest, peace, or even basic comfort, go somewhere else. This place doesn't provide it, and the experience left me frustrated and sleep-deprived. There are far better places to spend your money and actually feel like you're getting what you pay for.

The partnership they have with the State of Calif they have so many works in motion and the development of bus lanes and the express stations for people to use which are located at the many areas of city streets that go over the freeways express terminals were built so that people could use the buses on the city streets and still get to the express lanes. With the Leadership of Caltrans and the MTS and San Dag none of the many transportation trains and the Trolley developments that have worked alongside with the freeways the trains and trolleys will be taking the stress off the freeways. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer from the many travels that I have taken many times you may see the Caltrans works and the technicians which oversee and ones that come on the rainy days to the Nothern parts of California to make sure that travel and the many roadways are kept safe and repaired. To keep in mind is that when you drive is to slow down and follow the road signs Caltrans are on the job.

When you are in town visiting, this is a must for everyone. There is so much to see, so much to…read moreeat, and so much to do. Plus, you can get your steps in for the day. There are so many parking lots in the area and it really doesn't matter where you park, since they are all in the area and there is something on every corner. On special events, it can get busy and you may not find a parking spot. On this visit, we were here for the Dia de Los Muertos festival and it was packed. Luckily, we got there early, so were able to park quick and right behind the church (best location/lot). First off, make sure to take a picture by the park sign since it tends to get backed up with tourists. There are many vendors along the streets and also inside the shopping area which has lots of cool items and souvenirs. Inside the park, there are little museums that talk about the history of San Diego and the prominent families that call this home. Really cool learning experience and to get an idea of what SD looked like in the past. Plus, there is a cemetery with different tombstones with information for those that are intrigued by learning more about the deceased. Also, be sure to look down when walking on the street, there are grave markers where people have been laid to rest. A bit spooky but interesting. On Dia de Los Muertos, they have special vendors selling custom art pieces and numerous tables to do arts and crafts. I was able to try calligraphy wit a quill pen, make my own sugar skull, and also design a papel picado. There was live music and face painting to celebrate all our loved ones who have passed. The restaurants located in Old Town are also great so make sure you find the one that calls you in. From authentic Mexican food, to a quick bite, there is something for everyone. Be sure to wear walking shoes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty since most of the areas are grassy or have dirt trails. Def recommend everyone to visit at least once to explore. Have fun and enjoy your day at one of San Diego's popular neighborhoods.

The building were settled to feel like stepping into San Diego at the turn of the 19th century. If you focus on the history of the landscape and the structures themselves, looking beyond the carts filled with modern day tchotchkes and souvenirs, you can definitely appreciate what it must have been like. We were in SD for a game at Petco. I wanted to stay in the Old Town area because I have only ever done day, or once an evening, trips to Fiesta plaza and the restaurants and scores of stores along San Diego Ave, to the east of the OTSDSHP, but never really explored this neighborhood beyond the usual tourist spots. What a treat it was to enjoy this beautiful park at night, long after tourists had departed, and while a few locals remained for a last call, or to close down their stalls and shops for the night. This park takes on a rather special feel, more personal and slightly spookier than I imagined. We felt very safe walking around the grounds at night. Saw a few SDPD patrolling the perimeters, making sure late night bar goers minded their Ps & Qs, as well a a few other couples just strolling around, enjoying the soft lighting and old world charm. Many people and reviews will tell you about the great shops, food and margaritas to be had in Old Town and I fully concur! There's just nothing like a fresh made, hot, buttery flour tortilla and a margarita larger than your head on a warm , sunny day. But, if you can, come check out the area around 9pm and stroll the grounds, reading the various building and history plaques. Crowds have departed and not much, if anything is still open, but the quiet beauty of the park at night is time well spent reflecting on what it must've been like to settle in this beautiful region over 200 years ago. Cheers! "CC"
