We had a nice table for 4 outside. We ordered two of their cheese boards and some local red wine. The cheese board and local red wine was spectacular. There was lots of cheese to eat. We could not eat all the cheese. We should have ordered only one cheese board for the four of us. Service here was very good for us Americans who could barely speak French. They have everything from full bodied red wines, whites, rosé and Champagne. You buy the bottle in the store. If you would like to enjoy the bottle at La Grande Cave or just have a glass of the bottle, corkage is €8. The light food is well presented, is of high quality and is very individual depending on the waiter. One dish can be garnished with paprika and strawberries by one and with tomatoes by another. Interesting and authentic! You can also buy wine by the glass. They have red/white/rosé of the day for about €8 with higher quality than neighboring restaurants. The winestore/bar has about 6 small tables in a steep alley located in central Villefranche. During high season there is a calm flow of people strolling by. The environment is beautiful with a glimpse of the harbour. This is a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner. Maybe buy a bottle, have a glass of it and finish it with dinner at home or at a restaurant nearby?

We loved it enough to want to return Saturday. My dad stopped by Saturday to make a reservation and was told they were fully booked. Shortly after, I called from my US phone number not on purpose. The moment the owner saw the New York area code, her tone completely changed -- she was thrilled, saying "Bonjour New York, can't wait to see you," and made sure we had a table. When we arrived that evening, the same woman recognized me immediately as part of the Romanian family she'd turned away that afternoon. Her face fell. She turned to her colleague and had us seated at a cramped table at the very end -- despite the reservation being for 4 and my name already written down for the good table she'd set aside for "New York." There is no version of this that isn't about where she thought we were from. The only thing that changed between "fully booked" and a warm welcome was a US phone number, and the only thing that changed between that welcome and a bad table was seeing our faces. By that point I was too unsettled to even touch the drink I'd ordered -- we just paid and left. Genuinely one of the most uncomfortable, humiliating experiences I've had at a restaurant. We shared a few entrees which were all fabulous - Iberian plate which included cod fish ball croquettes (light and perfect) and rissoes (Portuguese empanada). We also tried the veal with Portuguese rice, which was very authentic. The veal had a delicious wine and mushroom sauce. We finished our meal with a homemade chocolate mousse which was smooth, creamy perfection. Ambience is modern, clean and simple. Our meal and bottle of wine was under 75 euros, which blew us away, considering how fantastic our meal was. Highly recommend!

The staff was very friendly and helped us with the menu since we could not speak French. We spent several hours here and more and more people arrived, appeared to be locals, which was a great sign to use we found a great place. After dinner, we had deserts which were great too. If you can, visit Le Tono. You should have a great meal!

The tapas and drinks were enjoyable, and we had a great evening. Unfortunately, the payment experience left a very bad impression. The card terminal asked me to choose between "Good," "Very Good," and "Exceptional" while the server was standing right next to me. I genuinely believed I was rating the service, but I later realized those options were actually different tip amounts. I found this confusing and misleading. In France, where service is generally included, I wasn't expecting a tipping prompt presented this way. If tips are optional, the terminal should simply say "Would you like to leave a tip?" and clearly show the amounts or percentages. That would be much more transparent. I hope the restaurant considers changing this, because it spoiled what was otherwise a pleasant experience.
