I found Dr. Leopold through the BlueCross BlueShield website and then immediately made an appointment after reading the great Yelp reviews. Dr. Leopold and her staff exceeded my expectations. Melissa at the front desk and Paula who took my vitals were both super friendly and patient. Paula explained many things which my other doctors/nurses have not bothered to explain, e.g. how to properly give a urine sample. Unlike most places in NY, I did not feel rushed at all. There was even a little rescued puppy (Maggie) visiting the office today, which added to the very comfortable, homey, and relaxed atmosphere of the office. Dr. Leopold was very patient and thorough. Unlike many of my past doctors who seem to give a rather rushed and cursory exam, she took her time to make sure nothing was out of the ordinary. I'm really satisfied with my experience here and will definitely be coming back! read more

This was refreshing because, I had recently gone to a different GP in the same NYU building that didn't really want to hear my concerns, had her own agenda and was rushed. The front desk flat out lied about being in-network for my insurance provider, Aetna. Dr Leopold is great and very professional but the front desk is another story. If you are with Aetna, you'll be charged out-of-network fees while their front desk claims to be in-network. I recommend going else where if you are with Aetna, unless you don't mind getting billed hundreds of dollars for an annual physical, even after Aetna covers more than half the fees. read more

I had a very similar experience to Justin. The doctor seemed nice, and to take a minute to listen, but the billing was awful. It's been almost a year since I was in the office, and I am STILL figuring out the billing (which was incorrectly billed from the start). I called many times about my bill, both to NYU and my insurance company. The last I had heard from Aetna was that a coding mistake had been made, first by NYU, then by another physician, then by the insurance company. Aetna said they would fix the mistake and send NYU the payment. Over the following months, unbeknownst to me, Aetna did not pay my bill, and NYU apparently sent my bill to collections without any further mailing notices or phone calls. When I asked about it later, they said they 'notified' me via a phone call and the staff noted that I was on a train. This rang a bell... I received a phone call where the caller only said "hello" and "is this a good time". They never identified themselves (I actually thought it was my undergrad university calling to ask for alumni donations), and when I told them it wasn't a good time as I was on the subway, they asked me for a better time to call back, to which I said the next day any time after 3pm. They never called back. I remember thinking it was odd I didn't receive a follow-up call (donations solicitors don't usually give up that easily). Months later I called NYU just to check that the insurance had sent them the payment (because I received a check from my insurance company which I thought was a mistake). I found out the bill had been sent to collections 3 months prior. Honestly, I'd go back to the doctor, but I wouldn't go back to that billing system/admin team. The stress of dealing with their billing department has likely negated any of the potentially positive effects of getting that annual physical. read more

I wanted to go to see Tammy but her receptionist just over the phone told me that their first new patient appointment is at the last week of October. It is Sept 22nd. The three stars are only for the doctor. It lost two for the way that office is run. I hope the doctor gets her own office again one day because they're useless. Their phone system is pure garbage and you have to press anything to get a live person, otherwise it takes you in circles or hangs up on you. They also told me they'd send the blood lab through quest but they used their own and I paid 500 total for the visit between seeing the doc and blood results. I finally decided to have my records sent elsewhere and something didn't compute when the girl sent it over because they sent a piece of paper without my name or what it was in regards to over to my new doc. Even the new doc had trouble getting a hold of them. Dr. Leopold is a great doc but I think she's going to lose patients with this new place and it's truely a shame. read more

I love Dr. Leopold. I was her patient when she had her own practice, and then I lost my job. 18 months later when I was once again insured, I went back to her at the Miller Practice. In September of 2013 I was concerned about a lump I could feel in my abdomen. She examined me and had me get an ultrasound. She was off the day after the ultrasound and told me I might not hear back from her with the results until the day after that. But to my pleasant surprise, she called me back the evening I had the ultrasound to discuss the results, because she knew I was concerned (all is good, I had surgery to remove a fibroid). Her demeanor can be misleading. At first she seems standoffish, but as you get to know her, she smiles a bit more and her bedside manner improves. I highly recommend her. read more

Five stars for Dr. Leopold and one for her staff brings this rating down to 3 stars rounding up. This seems to be more or less the consensus on Yelp. First for Dr. Leopold, she is friendly, thorough, and patient. Most doctors I've seen try to rush in, deal with you, and then move on to the next patient as quickly as possible. Dr. Leopold legitimately tries to listen and help. If she can prescribe something she does, if she doesn't have a good answer on something she'll refer you to someone good who does. All in all, as good as you can do with a PCP in the city. The Miller practice staff is terrible. I was billed incorrectly for basic blood testing I had done as part of a yearly physical; they coded it as diagnostic instead of routine, meaning that they were looking for something because I came in sick (wrong). I tried going through their billing team, but they don't have the ability to recode. Then I called their office and left messages with different people several times, never once receiving a call back as promised from anyone at all. Finally I used their online message system to get a hold of Dr. Leopold directly, and she was able to take care of it after a few weeks. My appointment was in early December, and this only got resolved the other day. During that time I got to have their front desk second guess whether I was telling the truth, I got to dial through their brutal phone system a ridiculous amount of times, and waste a legitimate couple of hours of time over this crap. This was only an $80 bill, but you know what, I can go out and have a decent dinner for that. I also don't want to pay it to an incompetent doctor's office, especially when I shouldn't have been charged in the first place. This is of course being said with the assumption that the error was accidental, which given another charge I received from them, I'm not so sure about. Like any NYU institution, Miller Practices is a bureaucratical clusterfuck. I went there for college, so I know this all too well. As great as Dr. Leopold is and as much as I liked her, I'm still unsure whether I can go back. And if I do, I will have to ask her to take time out of her busy schedule to hand-hold my billing, making sure that her office doesn't fuck up anything again. read more

I called to try to set up an appointment to get in to see Dr. Leopold. First of all very discouraging that I'm calling some central NYU answering service instead of the doctor's office. Then I had to give a tremendous amount of information to even start having the conversation about Dr. Leopold's availability. Seems sort of backwards. The entire process was removed, distracted and impersonal. Did not leave me wanting to go in to this practice. Although I'm employed full time with great insurance I did not like being asked about my work status from a central answering service. Finally -- no same day appointments? Really? Perhaps if I could speak with the doctor's office -- like my fantastic gynecologist's office -- I could have a real conversation about why I'm calling. So having had my own law practice for many years and having many friends with medical practices I would say that I am put off by this. Not sure if it is an NYU thing or just this practice. So much for looking for LGBT friendly physician today. read more

I have to state how great of a doctor Dr. Leopold is. I was sick a few months ago but Dr. Leopold moved offices a little further away. I've been extremely busy at work and decided to try a dr right next door to my office. However the dr was the COMPLETE opposite of Dr Leopold. His staff was also a nightmare Dr Leopold and staff are the nicest and most personable staff you will ever find. I will not use convenience as a reason to see a dr. I'm so glad I found Dr. Leopold. I find her to be so thorough, asks lots of questions and seems to really be investigating what's going on with me, instead of making a quick diagnosis. I appreciate so much that she takes the time to listen and get clear on what I'm experiencing, especially when I came in the first time feeling a bit scattered and all over the map in terms of my concerns. She offers thoughtful solutions, including vitamin supplements which have already helped. I really appreciate her knowledge and thoughtfulness in this area, and willingness to look at both the details and the big picture. She is also so patient and kind and willing to do all of the annoying work of making detailed referrals. This must be a bit painstaking for her, but really makes a difference in terms of the care I can access from other providers with my insurance, which I really appreciate!! I feel that in a healthcare world which is increasingly stressful for doctors and puts so much pressure on them to do so much in so little time, she is doing such a wonderful job of listening, being present with her patients, and being a healer. Best first doctor's visit I have ever had. Was recommended by a coworker. After inspiration from other Yelp reviews I made an appointment. They fit me right in and I was in and out. Truly a great group of people working there. I've never experienced such a friendly atmosphere at a doctors office. I thought finding a doctor and getting that first appointment was going to be dreadful. It was quick, easy and enjoyable. Would recommend to ALL my family members. I really could have sworn I found this doctor from Yelp but I guess it was RateMDs. Either way- I have been in search of a good PCP for quite some time. I don't like going to the doctor very often, so when I do, I want someone that will take the time out to carefully listen to ALL of my concerns. Usually PCPs just ask you a few questions but rush you out before you can fully answer. I highly recommend Dr. Leopold. Her office is nice and clean. Her staff is courteous and professional. I didn't wait long upon arrival and the nurses were very thorough. Although I went for a general physical, I had a few concerns that were the main reason for my visit. Dr Leopold carefully went down my list and addressed every one if them in detail. She asked numerous questions that other doctors, as I've found in the past, usually skip over in order to rush to the next patient. And she was very caring about a particularly sensitive issue. I've been with Dr. Leopold for about 4 years now (since before she moved in the NYU Langone System). What I love about Dr. Leopold is that she is thorough; if you present her with an issue she looks at every aspect of it and comes to a resolution. Frankly, I trust her because she is a very skilled diagnostician. She is not a particularly enthusiastic person, which is not a complaint in any way; she is even keeled and gets to the point. She also has on multiple occasions gone out of her way to fit me into a packed day because I've had a medical issue and felt nervous waiting longer, that's a caring doctor. read more

I'm trying to understand why I'm not seeing what everyone else is seeing in this doctor. I've been to her twice - both times she's been extremely cold with me. I grew up with a no-nonsense nurse mother who raised me to never go to the doctor for a virus or anything silly like that. So I can't understand how either visit has warranted her slightly annoyed almost angry tone. The first visit was just a physical to get established with a doctor after moving here from out of state. The 2nd was when I noticed some bald patches along my hairline - I'm only 27 but hypothyroidism & obesity runs in my family so I made an appointment to check. She told me that she already checked my thyroid at my physical 9 months prior, it was fine and that she doubted anything had changed. I'm not a doctor so I could be very wrong, but I thought you needed a blood test to check someone's thyroid - which I did not have at my physical. Again, there was no mention of blood work at this appointment either. I headed to the desk to check out & a nurse chased me down because I was supposed to wait to get blood drawn. No one told me. I apologized to the very friendly staff but it was just awkward. Just, really an altogether very unpleasant experience. read more

I suppose I've only ever had terrible doctors in my life, because I was unprepared for Dr. Leopold to be so caring and thorough. Can you believe it: a doctor who will actually look you in the eye when she speaks and listens to you? A doctor who actually makes you feel like your health personally matters to her? And let's not forget the stellar women who keep her office running: Paula, the capable nurse who isn't afraid to scold me when I'm late for my appointments (sorry!), and Melissa, perhaps the kindest receptionist you'll ever have the pleasure to chat with. I can't recommend Dr. Leopold's office highly enough. Everyone there is amiable and knowledgeable and will make you feel comfortable no matter what your reason for coming there is.The dog's even friendly. Excellent bedside manner. Thorough examination and lots of probing questions that made me feel like she actually gave a hoot. I've been to many doctors over the years due to changes in insurance and Dr. Leopold is the first person who actually took the time to ask questions, answer any I had, and all with a genuine smile and eye contact. You'd think that'd be easy to find in a doc, but sadly, I have not found that to be the case with most other doctors I've seen over 10 years+ of living in NYC. I was just there for a routine physical but I imagine if I had a serious issue, she'd be the doc I'd want by my side. read more

So here is the run down on the new office. Yes, the phone system is not working correctly. Apparently the entire Miller Practice was changing the phone system and all the doctors there are having problems getting there patient's calls. I saw Dr. Leopold on April 10th, 2013 and she said all the doctors are complaining to get the phone system fixed asap. There is supposed to be a person answering the phones and presumably this will be fixed soon. So as for the new office location, the space is a floor of a normal commercial building, not a hospital like I expected, so it's not the same as the small office atmosphere but it could be worse. There is a lot of paperwork to fill out the first visit, so I suggest getting there 30mins early. The good thing about the new office is the blood test are done right there. After I saw Dr. Leopold, a nurse came in right away to take blood, no fasting necessary. So the in house testing is a plus. Seeing Dr. Leopold is just as before, she is attentive and spent about 30mins talking to me. All in all, once the phone system is worked out, it should be much better. My earlier post from first week of April: Like most people here, I personally like Tammy Leopold and her staff. I have been to see her a few times and have recommended her to others. The problem is she has moved to the Langone Medical Center and now is impossible to get a hold of. I have been trying for a week just to get an appointment and can't. When ever I call, all I get is a voicemail box for the whole Langone Miller Practice and no one ever calls me back. I really like how small the office was before as it reminded me of the small doctor's offices I went to in Pennsylvania as a kid. I hope Dr. Leopold or someone who works for her reads this so they know their patients are trying to reach them and can't. I have been a patient of Dr. Leopold's for a few years now, and love her and the practice. I am a bit dismayed that she did not inform her patients that she moved her practice and her phone number changed. Regardless of the phone issues explained below, which of course happen, not her fault, her patients should have been given a heads up. I left a message, I certainly hope someone calls me back. What I loved about the practice was that it was efficient, accessible, and kind. I hope she is not going the way of the impersonal McDoctor practices that are a dime a dozen and don't care about their patients. I'm traveling to Africa this summer and needed to get a few preventative vaccinations. They were extremely thorough and asked for every city and country that I will be visiting to make sure to give me every vaccine or pill necessary. Wow! I did not know an experience like this was possible in New York. I barely had time to take my coat off before I was whisked into the exam room for my physical. After the blood pressure check and weigh-in, Dr. Leopold came in and sat with me for 15 minutes while taking my medical history and answering all my questions. She's great, the office is great, and the whole visit took 35 minutes from start to finish without feeling at all rushed. Seriously, I've gotten an annual physical every year for the past two decades and this was by far the most pleasant, efficient one I've had. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Leopold's for nearly 6 years. She is my favorite doctor that I see, and I have often said that I wished ALL my doctors (ob/gyn, eye doctor, dentist etc etc) could ALL be like her. Her smaller practice was the best, and the staff there was so personable and friendly. I loved it. Now, as the reviews below have also stated, I have been leaving messages at this mysterious "Miller Practice" for over a week and haven't received a return phone call. While it is not an emergency, I need to see my doctor. It's very difficult to reach her, NOBODY calls back, ever, and this is exactly what her patients liked about her smaller practice. Aside from the fact that she's a great doctor, of course. I am also posting with the hope that someone sees this review and, oh, I don't know, RETURNS OUR CALLS? UPDATE April 9, 2013: I received a phone call from Paula in Dr. Leopold's former office who saw this review and called me right away. She explained that the Miller Practice is going through a transition, not only adding new doctors to the practice but also with new phones/computers etc... and gave me exactly the kind of update and customer service that Dr. Leopold endorses. I appreciated the call very much. I have changed my review to 5 stars and should have reviewed Dr. Leopold much sooner, as I think she's the best doctor in this city. Dr. Leopold is the best physician I've ever had. She takes time with her patients, and makes sure both that all the patients questions are answered, and that she has gotten all the information she needs to determine what ought to be done. She makes herself available to her patients, and is very good at explaining complicated medical ideas in a way that is easily understandable but also doesn't insult one's intelligence. After having been to see Dr. Leopold only once for a routine physical, I experienced some abnormal symptoms while out of town. When I returned, her staff was able to squeeze me in that morning and was very sympathetic to my situation. Dr. Leopold was thorough in her exam and work up, given that we didn't know what the root cause was. She quickly referred me to a specialist and made a phone call to ensure I was seen the same day too. I went to Dr. Leopold based on all the yelp reviews, but I had a different experience. Dr. Leopold is thorough (maybe even too thorough), but I was not impressed with her bedside manner. Dr. Leopold was not very personable, which was surprising because Melissa (the receptionist) and Paula (the nurse) are so friendly. I saw her more than once and she was not very personable all the times I saw her. Because of this, I did not feel comfortable so I'll go to another doctor next time. For me, being personable and having a good bedside manner are just as important in a doctor as being thorough and not leaving patients feeling rushed. read more

Words are simply not sufficient in expressing the praise Dr. Leopold deserves. I am 46 years old and believe in getting the full use of my medical insurance, therefore, I do not hesitate to see a doctor when something ails me. The problem is that it has always been so difficult to find a doctor that is knowledgeable and listens with genuine concern. Imagine my surprise to find such a doctor in NYC, of all places. Dr. Leopold was referred to me by a co-worker 3 years ago. I was a regular patient for 2 years, moved away for a year and when I returned to NY last November, Dr. Leopold and Paula welcomed me in as if I had never been away--they remembered me, my prior visits, and Dr. Leopold took time to ask me about my year away and genuinely listened. Leo was her receptionist before I moved away and is no longer with the practice. Melissa, the new receptionist, fit right in with Paula and Dr. Leopold and her personality is an even better match. I honestly cannot sing high enough praises for Dr. Leopold. She is so caring and attentive that I wouldn't be surprised if she made a house visit to a patient desperately in need--seriously, she is that genuine. One reviewer didn't like Dr. Leopold's bedside manner. What does that mean? If you're looking for a phony smile and head pat, you won't get that from Dr. Leopold--she is a mature, intelligent and genuine practitioner for adult patients--not a pediatrician who needs to make a child feel comfortable and at ease before taking their temperature. In conclusion, if you're looking for a knowledgeable, attentive physician who doesn't keep you waiting for one hour because you're actually 1 of 4 people with that 2:00 p.m. appointment--Dr. Leopold is the best you will find. read more

Sometimes it takes a bad experience to prompt you to remember how good you had it. I was Dr. Leopold's patient for 6 years before moving out of the city. My first post-Leopold physical was so terrible I left halfway through the appointment. Dr. Leopold was always patient, efficient and supportive while still maintaining a kind, but no nonsense demeanor. I only went to one appointment in her new office so I can't speak to staffing or billing, but I know she would have preferred to stay with her own practice (she told me). Unfortunately that just isn't how medicine works anymore. In short, I would fly back to see Dr. Leopold if that were an option. read more

I love Dr. Leopold. I have since moved out of state, but I felt compelled to post this review because I'm finding it so tough to search for a good doctor now! Her staff was always very organized and friendly, and she is extremely careful and caring as a doctor. After I moved, I had to deal with a transition for an ongoing prescription and Dr. Leopold called me *herself* to check in. The waiting room (at least at the old location, I know she's moved) was also a nice experience; it felt more like sitting in someone's parlor than a doctor's office, with the classical music and the art on the walls.
