I tried Tamale Addiction for the first time this weekend. I had been craving mole for some time, yet I did not expect the chicken mole tamale to be so good. It's easily one of the best tamales I have had in a long time, We tried the verde pork which was also quite good, and the salsas, which are above average -even for Austin, This from someone who grew up in Central Mexico. The tamales are well served, with plenty of meat, and very flavorful. You can taste the quality. They are great value for the price. I ran across Tamale Addiction at the Dripping Springs Farmers' Market today. It was also their first time at the Drip market. We are tamale addicts. We used to host tamaladas back in Minnesota, and we have sampled or made all sorts over the years. I have to say that Tamale Addiction's version are absolutely first rate. For starters, they're not masa -heavy and have plenty of filler. The masa coating is reasonable, light and flavorful. We got pork tamales this first time, and the pork was chunky, tender, well-seasoned and already had a little zing on the back palate. Plus, these tamales are HUGE, compared to most purchased tamales. One is a meal for me. My spouse could only down one half. We steamed them, so they were falling-apart texture. The guy at the stand gave us two small containers of hot sauce - red and green. Now, we like heat, so warnings to us usually fall on deaf ears. As far as the green sauce is concerned, we shoulda listened. It brought out sweat under my eyes and on top of my head. I'm glad I didn't overdo it. Wife did and had to scrape it off to continue sucking down her half tamale. The red was much less so but had a quaint flavor. Looks like every Wednesday ( farmers' market day in the Drip) will become Tamale Addiction Day at our place. This is 4+ from me. I was hosting Christmas for the first time ever and wanted to give my parents a taste of Texas for the occasion. I decided tamales would be something different for us to have and started doing some research. That research here on Yelp led me to Tamale Addiction and it was a good guide to the right place for us. I didn't want too many tamales but also wanted us to be able to have some variety - so I appreciated the ability to order the quantity and flavors I wanted (versus so many others that required a half dozen or full dozen of a single flavor for your order). As a result, we were able to get Pork with Tomatillo Sauce, Chicken with Mole Sauce, Pork Al Pastor and Beef Tinga. If I had to do it again, I would have defrosted them before heating as they definitely needed more time to heat from frozen than advised. However, the outcome was good - we really enjoyed all of the flavors and there was a good balance of filling to masa (another thing that others seemed to complain about with other tamale alternatives). I did pickup from the Manor location and they seemed to have a solid system in place given the Covid restrictions. They were heavy on orders for the holidays, so took a bit to find mine (and they thought I was coming the day prior to my pickup date), but all in all a good, easy experience and I wouldn't hesitate to have Tamale Addiction tamales again. read more

I love tamales. Sure do. I like them full, flavorful, tasty, easy on the stomach and the eye. Not too heavy in masa.. Sometimes, they can be a little too thick for my liking, and not enough inside deliciousness. I ventured out at the Farmers Market and got a chocolate tamale.. my kids liked it, but I sure didn't. I did like the pork though. Because they are organic, I will eat one now an again... but they are by far my favorite. I wish the outside wasn't so thick and dry.. They are great, for healthy option (well, organically healthy, anyway) so, yes.. we will continue to give them another shot.. and another.. :) It would be fantastic, if they could switch up the styles.. like pizza crust.. deep dish (which is equivalent to their tamales, or this crust, which would be amazingly delicious... less masa! read more

I've had these at two different farmers markets and absolutely love them. The flavors are spot on, price is a bit high but you can't find a damn tamale made right here in Texas. They are made like the size of a freaking pen, which is not how you make a tamale. These were delicious but I have since asked the company whether their corn husks used to wrap them are pesticide free if not organic and they said they were ordinary ones from Mexico (most likely sprayed). They should not advertise their products as 100% organic (on Farmer's Market sign) if they are not! Please mention this to them as well if you are reading this. We ordered about 28 tamales, different ones, and salsas for Christmas. My daughter loved what she had a the farmers market in Austin, so we decided to have her bring them to Houston. We were so excited, but ended up so disappointed. These were big fat tamales that had no more than about 1 tablespoon of filling, all piled at one end, and a massive amount of sloppily rolled masa. The chicken mole were actually too sweet, too much cocoa and not enough chicken. The flavor of the pork was nice if you could find the pork, we all left piles of masa on the plates. We also had the xochitl ones, which had a little more filling, but did not know they would have tofu in them, as not listed on the menu, and i cannot eat tofu. Even my daughter was shocked at how much masa there was, and little filling, as she has eaten these tamales several times. It felt like the kitchen was either trying to cheap out on the filling, or they just didnt have enough. Furthermore, we tried the chocolate tamales, and there was only a scant trace of the chocolate center, again only on one end of the tamales. I spent $100 on these for our Christmas dinner. (We always do homemade enchiladas or tamales and thought this would be a fun treat)....i certainly hope this mess of masa was a fluke. I should also add, there were no heating instructions (i do know how tonprepare them, but not everyone does) and the red sauce, too hot on its own, needed salt and acid to make it edible. The jalepeno sauce, entirely too hot, even after we cut it with lime juice and salt, inedible. If there was something we should have done special to it, there were no instructions. I will likely not go to the trouble to order these tamales again. Sorry guys, masa is too cheap to pay that much for mostly masa and little filling. read more

I was blessed with a taste. I only had one tamale (chicken mole), but it was REALLY good. These tamales are gluten/lard/trans fat/preservatives/and additives free. And made with organic Masa. I need to get to the nearest location and order more. They have vegetarian, vegan, and sweet options, which all look good to me. I've always been partial to a food provider with a short menu. That lets me know they are more concerned with perfecting their product than providing us with unnecessary options. Kudos and thumbs up. This is a review for the location at the Mueller farmer's market. There are a couple of serious issues with this business. First, the food is below average at best, but they take advantage of customers that have little experience with this type of dish. The food is way, way overpriced, especially when considering the quality. For context, two of their tamales are the price of a standard dozen tamales. Second, they are woefully underprepared. I was told to wait for my order while it heated. (The tamales are frozen.) Several other customers had the same issue. More than half the menu was "not ready" and several people were told to wait or come back later. No apologies to anyone for the wait, including me. The younger girl who was there had a terrible attitude, which was surprising when considering the highway robbery they were committing with their pricing. I'd encourage everyone to save their money and wait for Tamale Place to reopen later this Fall. The guy that works there is very nice and has a great product. I once saw him out there in freezing temperatures helping fulfill his orders. Again, please do not support bad local businesses like Tamale Addiction. I'm a resident in the neighborhood, and I'll be happy to add more to this review if anyone has questions. read more

I've been a regular Tamale Addiction customer for several years now. I only buy the chicken mole and the black bean & goat cheese tamales frozen in bulk (the chicken plantain raisin olive one in the banana leaf is great, too). Quality is incredibly consistent. Their organic masa is lard-free and I think they use Pure Luck goat cheese. I have never bitten into a chicken bone. The trick is to microwave them on low/medium and flip them halfway through; that keeps the masa nice and soft. Then let those puppies sit for a couple minutes to soak up some of that good steam. If you cook them on high, they get too crispy. The mole is great on its own, and I can jazz up the bean & cheese with some homegrown Austin salsa. They even mix some epazote (Mexican tea herb) into the black beans, which act as a natural anti-flatulence agent! I've gotten others addicted to their tamales as well (including my extremely picky vegetarian-ish mother, who has a stockpile of the black bean & goat cheese tamales in her garage freezer that many would consider suitable for a survival situation). One is a good snack or small meal, and two is a full meal, so the price point is fair when taking the quality of the ingredients into consideration. The owner is awesome (I text her my orders), and every employee I've interacted with over the years has been friendly as can be. If you can't make it out to their Manor store, they are a staple at many Austin-area farmers markets and festivals. Hours: This place is only open during the day, Monday - Friday 9-3. I live in Manor, but work in Austin, so it took a while for a reason to drive into Manor during the day. But I am glad I stopped here when I had the chance. Farmer's Market: I was told by the cashier that this place sells tamales at most of the Austin based Farmer's Market. He stated the closest Farmer's Market they sell at to Manor is the one in downtown Austin. While this shop is in Manor, they do not sell at the local Farmer's Market in Manor. (I hope they reconsider this, and start supporting the Farmer's Market in their very own town.) Tamales Tamales are $3, and are a very generous size. One tamale is filling, and two tamales will have you stuffed! I ordered the chicken mole tamale, which was ok, along with a spinach and onion tamale which was awesome! They offer two salsas (red & green) and they were both good. The menu had a wide assortment of tamales, with both traditional and non-traditional flavors. I look forward to trying their other offerings soon. They even had sweet/dessert tamales, and tamales wrapped in banana leaves. Overall, the food was of good quality, nice portion size, and very tasty. The cashier was kind and informative. I ate two for lunch at the X-Games and they kept me full well past dinnertime for only $10. We have been buying from tamale addiction for special occasions for a long time now. They have numerous, scrumptious vegetarian tamales. I can't recommend them highly enough. Just for the heck of it we drove to their Manor location today to pick up our tamales for Easter Sunday for a family get together. We were surprised at how large their operation is there. But the thing that was the most surprising was how incredibly immaculately clean the entire facility was. We keep a clean house and kitchen but I don't think we can match the cleanliness of this facility. I simply don't know how they keep it like that. I am partial to the costeno tamale, the pork tamale wrapped in a banana leaf. I never liked the tamales wrapped in corn husks. I have been eating the costeno tamale on and off for about three years. Three years ago the pork and corn masa ratio was good in the tamale, and the tamale tasted great. Between 2017 and now, 2018, the pork filling has really decreased. Now the tamale is largely masa with just one fourth of the former pork filling. Price has remained the same at $5 per tamale. Not a good deal anymore. I will make my own tamales or tamale casserole. Call me no longer addicted to the tamales here. read more
