I've been going here for over 6 years and have generally been happy with their work, but have noticed a significant decline in quality over the years. The owner Tam is a great guy and fantastic at his job, but generally only takes appointments now. Without an appointment, you are left with someone else at his shop. These days, odds are they will speak little to no English, and fail to follow basic instructions. They also take way too long for a basic cut. There have Ben multiple times where Tam has even stepped in to fix or finish my cut due to the language barrier or poor skills of the other barbers. Today I asked for a 3 on the sides and the guy starts with a 7. I asked for the top to be left to 1.5 - 2 inches in length, which would have been about 3 inches cut off, and he cut less than half an inch. I asked for more off and he continued to cut in quarter inch increments until I had enough and said it was fine, as I had already been in the chair an hour and a half and had to get back to work. My hair is now barely cut and not even close to what I originally requested. The back of my head is also uneven, and the sides cut to different lengths. It is easily the worst cut I have ever had, not just at this shop. Very disappointing in what is usually good work and will now have to go pay for another cut or schedule an appointment with the owner to fix it. read more

I have been to several barbers in Ob. This is the only place that can confidently trim my mustache and do a nice shave without charging an arm and a leg. The shop is a little bland with posters from like 1996 BUT they have 2 big tv's to catch the game. Good business model here I hope they stick around! The barbers at Tam generally have good hair-cutting skills, but some of them lack the language skills necessary to follow basic English instructions, for example (in my case) "leave an inch on the sides." I used to go there for over two years, and for the past months, the owner keeps bringing people that literally don't know how to cut the hair off. Those ladies are there for months any yet do a horrible job with so many clients complaining. They don't understand English, so whatever you say, they're not gonna do it. Today was the last day I went there along with three other friends of mine that used to go there as well. It's always uncomfortable to refuse do the hair with them and wait for the others. Today was the 6th time in row that I regretted to go there and I do the hair twice a month. I use to recommend for all the friends around the area, but I won't anymore just like they won't. I've been coming to this barber shop for 2-3 years since moving to San Diego. Overall, it's been a decent place--especially considering the affordable prices. However, my most recent visit will be my last. During this visit, the owner had a new barber "in training" who was clearly cutting hair for the very first time. The young man was visibly nervous and inexperienced, and to make matters worse, the owner provided little to no supervision throughout the haircut. It was extremely uncomfortable watching someone so unprepared attempt a haircut, especially knowing that I was the client being practiced on without proper oversight. Everyone deserves a chance to learn, and I have no issue with apprentices gaining experience. In fact, I made sure to treat the trainee respectfully and tipped him well. My issue is with the owner's lack of professionalism and complete disregard for customer experience by allowing a trainee to work unsupervised on a paying customer. After years of loyalty, I expected better. I won't be returning, and I suggest others look for a more professional barber shop that respects and values its customers. read more

Been coming here for years but lately this place has gone down hill. Alot of new barbers and they are really bad except Tam and one of the other guy that's been there for a while. The gentleman that cuts hair in the 1st chair closet to the front door is the best! I'm station in SD for a few months and I went last year when I was here to him and he basically gives the best haircuts I have ever received! He takes his time but you can tell the end result is excellence! When you get a zero fade most places use a razor raw but he puts in a cream so you don't feel like your skin is being shaved off. This is the first barber shop I ever went to to get my own hair cut and they were so helpful and welcoming! I was so nervous walking in, not knowing what it was going to be like, but as soon at I walked in the owner greeted me, cracked a joke and I quickly felt at ease. The atmosphere is very chill and the staff is very understanding. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair so they walked me thought all the different hair cuts that were posted on the wall. All the basics they have down pat, and do it well. Here's why it's not a five. They have three massive television screens on - all with different channels and all loud. ON TOP OF THAT, some of the coworkers start singing karaoke in the back at the top top top volume. Basically the store was shaking. After coming to this barbershop, for almost 6 months I was really disappointed. I asked for a low skin fade combover. Wanted to get a cut by the owner but was booked up. So I took a chance with one of their other barbers. Immediately what she decided to do is take a clipper with no guard and went straight cut the side off. Past months I've been getting cut by Jenny and she was great and recommended that when I come in to ask for low fade combover. "ONE OF THE BEST HAIRCUTS I'VE HAD IN A LONG TIME!" I visited SD for a conference and didn't have time to get a haircut before coming. I looked at many different "Barber shops" around the metro SD area and saw everything from places that have beauticians offering men's and women's cuts, places that are charging upwards of $60 for a haircut, and everything in between. When I look for a haircut, I'm looking for a true " barber shop". What is that you might ask? To me it's a shop that has only barbers who attended barber school and are properly licensed through the state license board. I want a place that caters to men and their hair and shaving needs. After searching and wading through all the yelp reviews, I broke it down to three places and then went with my guy. I chose TAM VN. Soon as I walked in I knew all was going to be ok. I felt comfortable and "at home" even 2500 miles away from home. The two TVS had ESPN on and people seemed cheerful. This guy knows how to cut a head of hair. The attention to detail was amazing and after all was said and done, the mirror proved it. One of the best haircuts I've had in a long time. On top of that, his prices are amazing. $11 for a haircut! Even in south California! I gave Tam a nice tip just because he was so awesome! I wish I were here often. Although I didn't have a chance to get the hot towel shave for $15, I can only imagine how great it would be. I'm a haircut and barber snob. I admit it. I'm very picky. Did I mention VERY PICKY? I've had my haircut here many times and only once has it been great. Every other time, they just don't listen. I always ask for a 1 to 3 MID fade and to leave the top cuz I like it to look messy on top and they always go above and cut near my temples and they always give me a high fade. Good price for a good haircut. It's $12 for a normal cut for guys, which is pretty cheap. Just bring cash if you don't want to pay the $1 credit card fee. I got the older guy and he's good but he takes his time. Probably sat there close to 40 minutes total? But it makes me feel he's very detailed and careful. At the end, they take a vacuum to your head to get all the loose strands and he also uses a razor for a close shave around your head.
