So having a branch here in Portland is great--and take note that not only do they have great sales, but there's a seconds/repurposed area toward the back (and sometimes special displays) with items from the brand that are being re/upcycled, all of which cost less than regular price. What's even better is how local the vibe is in the store, and how well connected they are with the wider community of makers. Along with the brand's products the store carries little locally made gifts: everything from jewelry to soap to playing cards and chocolates. There's no set selection, but you'll always find little collections of items for sale around the store. And this weekend Toad & Co. hosted a holiday makers' market in the large back warehouse room, which was awesome! This brought in a bunch of Maine makers selling pottery, coffee, jewelry, leather goods, knitwear, cards, books, candles . . . basically I got most of my Christmas shopping done here! I love that Toad & Co. is sponsoring something like this and really connecting with the community--definitely the kind of business I want to support.

Aside from their clothing, both locations (Biddeford store as well) have many odds and ends, including jewelry that is made by smaller companies, some home goods like blankets, pillows and decorations; hats, shoes and belts, stationary, a few baby clothing items and some good gift items. Staff is helpful and there are many that go out of their way to make your experience shopping a good one. Clothing is also online on their website. This spot is not to be missed.

It honestly amazes me that the staff here works on commission (or at least earns a percentage of…read moresales) because they certainly do not act like it. I have shopped at this location multiple times and have spent hundreds of dollars in a single visit thousands over time. Every time I come in, I am polite, patient, and respectful. I smile, say excuse me, and ask for help when needed. Yet on more than one occasion, I've been met with rude behavior or attitudes that make me feel like I'm inconveniencing the staff by simply asking a question. Today was the final straw. I forgot that I had a gift card and had already paid cash. The gift card did not cover the full amount, so I politely asked if the sale could be redone so it could be applied. I was told no. There was no effort to help, no solution offered, no customer-service attempt whatsoever. So I will be returning everything and repurchasing using my gift cards, and I will not be stepping back into this store again. The staff should be ashamed of themselves. The products themselves are great. I genuinely love the clothing and quality. But customer service matters especially when you work on commission. If you are earning from sales, you should be going above and beyond, not acting bothered by the customers who are funding those commissions. Very disappointing.

This store really helped Portland make a great first impression. When I did move to Portland the following year, I started frequenting Corey on a weekly basis. Three years later, my closet is easily 75% from Corey & Co. The owner and sales associate are both so warm and friendly. Going into the store is truly a lift to my day, and helped me feel right at home when I was still new to Maine. The clothes are classic and understated, with a European or Scandinavian feel. Inventory is carefully curated from small, independent designers from Maine, NYC, France, Denmark and beyond. The owner is so knowledgable about each piece, making insightful recommendations and providing the back story for each designer, making cheerful conversation along the way. I could go on and on.
