AJITAMA TONKOTSU RAMEN: I'm a tonkotsu person and almost always order this over other types of ramen. Not sure if I was just so severely deprived of Asian food, but I felt Takumi's tonkotsu ramen ranked pretty high on my list! And coming from SoCal as well as having lived down the street from both major Japanese food hubs in Los Angeles, that's saying a lot! The tan tan men was my favorite - creamy chicken soup, sesame paste, chili oil. I'm not sure why the shoyu wasn't as tasty, but the portions were perfect and the amount of noodles was just how we liked. The broth is of course what tends to make or break a ramen, and the broth here was excellent: nutty, lightly spicy, complex, without being too heavy. Really authentic tan tan men broth here. Not exceptional, hence the 4-star review, but damn impressive. I'd prefer some better toppings (e.g., replace the tomato with something like menma, kikurage, or something a little more authentic).
